tldr; glass bottle of 100mg/ml exploded on me tonight. overkill protective gear saved my ass. us amateurs should use extra protection.
this is a six pack of tall beers plus after fact, so I hope I make sense. I have had several work injuries that could have been prevented if I had gone overkill on protective gear, so now when I am in the situation that I think I may need to protect me from myself I tend to overdo it a bit and it paid off this time. Any time I work with 100mg/ml I wear a full face respirator, disposable coveralls on top of thick clothing and thick boots. and of course thick rubber gloves. I dont deal with 100mg much because I mix a liter of a time down so that if I add 5% flavor I end up with 3mg/ml juice, so I end up with +/- about 3mg or so, who cares, it's for me. with 3mg concentration I just wear a bicycle helmet in case I fall over and bump my head ( the beer just said that, not me)
Anyway, I had a freezer temp 500ml 100mg/ml plastic bottle that I was transferring into 30ml room temp glass bottles. (dumbass moment) ...I got all my bottles filled and started putting my polycone caps on all nice and super tight( +1 to dumbass moment, they apparently seal really good) . I had a few dribbles on some of the bottles so I rinsed the sealed bottles off with warm water that I already had handy. (+1 dumbass moment, warm water). I wiped all the water off the wet bottles so I could put my mister yuk stickers on them (free from the hospital) and while I was wiping them off one exploded from the pressure of heating up and being fully sealed. I had a shard of glass like a little arrow stuck in my respirator's face shield right in front of my eye, among other little shards stuck to it covered in pg/nic ..... I was covered in 100mg/ml nic with bits of glass. after releasing the pressure in the rest of the bottles and securing them, all I had to do was peel off my layers. yay protective gear.
I hope my dumbass moments help others to learn and help at least one dumbass to start protecting him from himself
edit : so based on conversation below this is the combination that I loosely think caused one to blow up..
- no headspace in the bottle

- I shook the shit out of my pg base introducing lots of small cold air bubbles before pouring.
- I sealed the cold pg/nic and air bubbles leaving no space for expansion
- I warmed the bottles when I was washing the outside off.
then pressure was too high for the bottle and boom.
Cough.. Bullshit
I don't understand how this could have happened. What was causing the pressure?
Neither PG nor VG go through a phase change when stored at home freezer temperature, and if they did, they would reduce in volume when they became warm.
Thermal shock could crack the glass, but ... driving slivers of glass into your face shield? That's so much force... what would have caused this pressure?
Well there's the pocket of air above the liquid. Also, the liquid itself will change density slightly as it heats up even if it doesnt go through a state change, although I don't think that would have done it. It doesn't need to expand either, a contraction would be just as dangerous because of the pressure differential between atmospheres.
But this is what i think probably happened: Glass has tiny air bubbles in it. He's put cold nic into the bottles, causing those air bubbles to shrink and create lots and lots of small stresses inside the glass. Then he's run the bottles under warm water, causing a rapid expansion of the air bubbles. This has effectively put the glass under cycling stress (like work hardening a piece of metal) and BANG broken glass. Because glass is so brittle, all of the energy released from the break has caused the little shards to go flying.
oh shit moment from reading your bubbles. before filling the bottles I shook the shit out of the pg/nic to make sure it was mixed well. there were lots of little super cold air bubbles in there that wanted to expand when they warmed up and had nowhere to expand to.
I got a good blob of 100mg VG in my eye the other day. Don't be a pussy. It stings but just rinse and your fine.
Also glass doesn't explode like that. Trust me I've bottled my own beer, shit happens but it's no bomb!
Also vg/pg don't expand or contact with in a house hold temperature range.

~~ok, since you are so smart, I propose you replicate what I did and place the bottle in front of your face. see you at the hospital.~~ if your beer bottles are blowing up, then you are doing it wrong, you either need to be more patient and let it ferment out further before adding your bottling sugar (use your hydrometer) or your calculation on how much bottling sugar to use is wrong. (get beersmith)

I don't believe there was enough pressure to blow apart the bottle, glass bottles can withstand a lot of pressure. Thermal shock will shatter the glass though, but not with enough to force to send a shard of glass to stick into your face shield. That's bullshit. I wear a face shield often when grinding and using a lathe with metal and wood, and have had many things large and small smack me in the shield. Not once has anything stuck in the shield.

Oh, so it's just stuck in the thin peel off film, and not "like a little arrow stuck in my respirator's face shield"...what kind of face shield do you have? If the bottle was going to blow up, it would have blown the cap off first. Pressure will always find the weakest point to escape, and that would be the plastic cap and not the glass.
Not buying it. Glass doesn't explode like that when pressurized. Would've blown your plastic topper off first or cracked the glass for pressure to escape.
PSA: Allow your bottles from the freezer to come COMPLETELY to room temperature before even opening them.
Edit: not sure why down votes but this is proper procedure. You don't want cold PGVG being exposed to air as they are hydrophilic and attract water which will be condensing on the cold liquid.
I would crack the seal on it so it does not build pressure, I think my problem was I left no headspace in the bottles, so no gas to compress when it started to expand.
Is 100mg that toxic? My bottle from liquid barn likes to leak some on the sides when I shake it up and take the top off and I get it on my hands all the time. That is unless I'm making juice for someone else, I throw gloves on at that point.

Pictures of the face mask? I find this whole thing a little fishy. I pop my nicotine in the freezer for storage and pull it out every time and run it under a warm water bath to thaw it out for easier dispersion. Not once has anything happened to my glass boston storage bottle. (nicotine potency may account for this but I highly doubt it (48mg/ml))
I could take pics, but the piece of glass was stuck in the plastic peel off protector, I could take the protector out of the garbage and find a new piece of glass to poke in it and take pics for the reddit drama effect. I think my issue is I had no airspace between the liquid and the cap.
