One of my coworkers commissioned me to make an apple fritter the way he makes it (His other job is as a baker). He said he's never had one that really captured the essence of it.
This is the conversation I had with him that gave me an idea of how I was to go about doing it:
HIM: "I would prefer to get a lot of the like apple and fruity flavors of it on the exhale and the sugary cinnamon on inhale because you get the apples on the after taste of the pastry and most ejuice you get the sweet side on the exhale so I think it'll be different and turn out really well or really bad idk I smoked a lot of weed I was stressed the fuck out
Like on a good apple fritter the cinnamon overloads your taste buds right away, and after you swallow it you taste apple
I know i use lemon juice when I make them but very little so maybe a tiny bit of lemon in it or something like that Idk if I'm making sense or I'm just high"
So the main notes I think of trying to accomplish this is: *Light, doughnut-like, glazed pastry; Apple (not candied, more like an apple pie without the overload of sugar, still fresh and slightly crisp, but coated in an almost cinnamon sugar); Cinnamon-sugar.
- So let's go over why I chose certain flavors in respect to each main note:
The Dough/Pastry
I knew it was going to have to be a light pastry. I didn't want a heavy flavor like FA Cookie, so I had to combine multiple flavors in small amounts to achieve a light and fluffy dough:
Biscuit INW: This is what immediately popped into my head. It is a perfectly buttery and light pastry like note that contributes so much to any pastry recipe. Used at .75%
Graham Cracker CAP: At 0.5% this adds a baked bread aspect with a slight notes of cinnamon.
Apple Pie FA: Inspired by Wayne's use in his SVBICC to add a waffle cone/graham crust like note, at 0.5% it does just that. It provides a body for these other 3 notes to work together. I removed it initially after using it at 2% because it just seemed too heavy and wasn't light enough. Without it, the bread notes just didn't work, they didn't have the mouthfeel of pastry.
Joy FA: Everyone's beloved Joy. This pulled everything together, blending the bread notes in a sense. It compliments each flavor used perfectly and I wouldn't make this recipe without it. Used at .25%
The Apple
Double Apple CAP: This flavor popped out at me recently. It had been tucked away in a drawer for the longest time until I realized the proper use for it. It is a very fresh, macintosh apple. It reminds me of these "apple pancakes" my mom used to make for me as a kid. They were slices of macintosh apples, sliced and pan fried in a light batter. She used them because they were the only apples that got soft enough in such a quick cooking time. Anyway, at 4% it is not overpowering but peeks through as a fresh sweet apple right on the inhale. It's beautiful. It isn't exactly how my friend wanted the apple to come through (he wanted it on the exhale), but sometimes fuck^you^just^deal^with^it.
Apple Pie TFA: This provides a base for the double apple to sit on. It almost acts similarly to FA Apple Pie. I'm using it at 2% to give a slightly bready and cooked apple note to provide a base for the entirety of the recipe.
Cinnamon-Sugar
FLV's Rich Cinammon. This shit is fucking fantastic. It is a beautiful, beautiful piece of work. I knew immediately I'd be using it in this recipe because it doesn't give that fake, hot (not actually hot, just how I describe the nuance of them) taste I get from flavors like CAP CDS. This may hurt you all, but I had to use it by drops because of it's strength and having mixed in a small batch size. Used at 3 drops (out of the FLV 15mL bottle) per 40mL.
Brown Sugar TFA: This compliments the whole recipe, making it sweeter and turning the cinnamon from raw cinnamon, into cinnamon sugar. It just belongs. It^just^does. Used at .5%
FLV's Caramel: At first I thought I hated this, but in this recipe it works wonders. It sweetens it SO much, turning the pastry into a glazed pastry or a sweetened pastry. It adds a very nice sugary mouthfeel without the aftertaste you would get from sucralose/other sweetener additives. Once again, drops: Used at 2 drops per 40mL / 1 drop per 20mL. (Again, 15mL FLV standard bottle)
TL;DR
Commissioned for recipe,
Apple Fritter
-
Double Apple (CAP) 4%
-
Apple Pie (TFA) 2%
-
Apple Pie (FA) 0.5%
-
Biscuit (INW) 0.75%
-
Graham Cracker (CAP) 0.5%
-
Brown Sugar (TFA) 0.5%
-
Joy (FA) 0.25%
-
Rich Cinammon (FLV) 3 drops/ 40 mL (You are more than welcome to do less dependent on how much you like cinnamon)
-
Caramel (FLV) 2 drops / 40mL
Mixed at 70/30 VG/PG
Enjoy! <3
EDIT: OH ya, I shake and vape it, baby :) Get's better marginally after steep (smooths out).
EDIT AGAIN: I tried a fresh batch versus the one that's steeped. I didn't realize it but it actually gets so much better after a week. The flavors all blend together into layers. Shake and vape is good, but give it a bit for best results.
I love it that these write-ups are becoming a trend in this sub lately -- your format kind of reminds me of the write-up I recently did for the exact same flavor profile, but out recipes couldn't be more different. I bet they're both delicious too! Can't wait to try yours.
Edit: I hope you don't mind -- I shared your recipe, with credit, alongside my own Apple Fritter on tonight's episode of MakerTalk to illustrate a point & introduce a new segment promoting DIY juice creators. I provided the link to your thread too, but if you want it edited out of the YouTube video for some reason, just let me know.
I didn't see this until now; unsure why. I don't mind at all and I actually watched that podcast when it was first posted and was taken by surprise when you mentioned it :P I think I meant to message you at some point just to give you a thumbs up and probably had other things to say but I've forgotten them since.

3 drops per 40 ml? Are you satan?
Seriously though, I've been loving /u/returnity 's Cinnamon Apple Fritter, so I may have to mix this up as soon as I get CAP Double Apple. Is the use of FLV Caramel recipe-changing? I have a ton of FA Caramel sitting around, but I don't think it would have quite the effect you described from FLV.
I think FA caramel would be the closest sub. Maybe a bit higher conc. though, like .5%
EDIT: That's the lovely thing about FLV cinnammon. I can use it at a high amount without it overpowering the other flavors. Yes, it is stronger, but it doesn't mute the other flavors; they blend very nicely.
I hadn't seen his recipe I'm gonna go check it out.
Definitely check /u/returnity 's recipe out, I have been vaping the shit out of it. Ran out of Fuji and subbed INW Two Apples, definitely not the same, but still quite good. INW Two Apples is much more tart. Only missing CAP Double Apple for this recipe, it's on my order list. Looking forward to trying it.
Returnitys Apple Fritter (minus the Rich Cinnamon) is probably my favorite recipe posted, I'll definitely have to try this out and see how it compares.
Really glad you liked mine that much -- get the rich Cinnamon if you don't have it, you won't regret it.
Didn't I see you in the MakerTalk chat tonight? Thanks for coming out, hope you enjoyed it -- I'd love any feedback on how I can improve the format for the show.
I'm excited to try this. Thanks for the amazing write up as well.
No problem! Give me honest feedback when you get a chance to try it!
How essential is the caramel? That's the only thing I don't have, and this juice came out fantastic without it. I'm just wondering if it will blow my mind to have it. Lol
I can nearly make this since I put last night's order in. Don't have double apple though, and I've never tried it. Would an FA Fuji sub work? I know it works well with TFA and FA apple pie. Will also be using TFA Graham Cracker clear instead of CAP.
Shrine, you have some great recipes and I'm sure this one is no different. I like the use of double apple here -- it's a great flavor and my personal second favorite apple.
I'll mix this up, as soon as I decide to buy this Rich Cinnamon stuff.
