Breathing protection at 100mg/ml?
submitted almost 10 years ago by sodakdaveOne of "The Damned"

So I'm new to DIY and I've just made my first big order. I'm still waiting on my nic to show, but for cost sake I chose 100mg/ml base. What sort of breathing protection do I need to work with this?

Edit: I searched several terms and didn't get anything. If I missed, let me know what I should have searched for please?

Edit2: Thanks everyone for the great advice! I plan on using gloves, and of course my glasses for my eyes. I'm now comfortable mixing without any sort of mask, and I'll be mixing right next to a sink so I can have quick access to water if anything happens.

I do plan on splitting my nic out into a bottle of 50mg to use for mixing, and keep the rest in the freezer.

That's not necessary. I don't even use gloves anymore. Just don't drink it and you'll be fine.

While it doesn't seem necessary to use gloves, it's cheap insurance. The LD-50 of nicotine is .8mg/kg bodyweight. That means for a 160lb person (or 72.6kg) to DIE from nicotine one only needs to absorb 58.08mg or .58mL of 100mg/ml nicotine through the skin. In 100mg/mL spilling even 1 mL on your skin has potential risk. No point in not paying 5 bucks for a 100 pack.

> LD-50 of nicotine

Route of administration is important to take note of. Big difference between spilling something on the skin VS inhaling VS drinking VS injecting.

This article seems to think that it's closer to an LD50 of 6.5–13 mg/kg meaning that for an 160lb person (~72kg), they would need to ingest 468mg-936mg of pure nicotine, which in a 100mg/ml solutions (100 strength) would equate to 4.7ml - 9.3ml of mix.

So getting about 1/2 a tablespoon on 100 strength into the system may be enough, although you'd have to inject it realistically, because absorption through skin is not fast enough, nor is vaping it or drinking it.

It's nice to wear gloves when working with 100 strength, because it does burn a bit on the skin after a spill if you don't wash it off, but it's not a risk (unless you were to spill on a giant open wound that would allow for quick entrance into the bloodstream).

Yes, be safe, but not wearing protection does not equate to any realistic lethal danger.

I've swallowed more than 1ml of 100mg/ml of nicotine. Only got a light buzz. You're not gonna die... Nicotine is A LOT less toxic than people think. A few new studies are in the works to prove the less toxic nature of nicotine.

I’ve spilled more than that on my skin, just washed it off, a light buzz was felt. I really recommend using eye protection though, not just when handling nic but also for the flavors. My vision is pretty poor so my head is always close to the bottle, while pulling out a pipette I managed to launch a drop of VBIC into my eye, that shit stings like soap times 10, holy shit.

Nicotine has an abysmally poor absorption rate through the skin. To get near toxic exposure levels, an average person would have to spread several ml on their skin and let it sit, without washing it off for 5 minutes to see any serious effects.

i wasn't wearing gloves for awhile, but selling 30ish 30mls a week, i started having panic attacks, upset stomach, and headaches. started wearing gloves again and the problems stopped.

Breathing apparatus is not required for home use and small batches (but highly recommended). And I say just the piece of mind of wearing gloves when dealing with that nic is worth the couple bucks at checkup

Eye protection, gloves and common sense should be all you need. If you're super worried about a rogue drop making a beeline for your sinuses or uvula, I guess you could wear a dustmask or something. Fumes from a sitting batch of 100mg aren't an issue.

None. I've stupidly (and accidentally) vaped 48ml/mg and just had to lie down for a while. Nicotine is actually far less dangerous than is commonly thought. In fact, the erroneous medical literature puts the lethal dose (ld50) at 5 cigarettes in an hour, which is obviously ridiculously low - most of us have probably exceeded that dosage.

Current medical research is revising this old analysis - and by old, I mean the only cited studies were conducted during the 1850's by unpublished researchers, and then documented by another researcher after their verbal account a few years later.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3880486/

The actual ld50 of nicotine is somewhere higher than .5g, or 5 ml of 100mg/ml directly ingested, if my math is correct.

I'm not a doctor (although the person who wrote the paper above, Bernd Mayer, PhD. Professor & Chairman Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology Karl-Franzens-University, is) so don't follow my advice. Use the protection you feel necessary, but first, please do the research for yourself.

Personally, I make sure my hands are clean before and after mixing, that's the only precaution I feel is necessary.

I have been doing research, and I've seen several articles on either side. That's why I came here to get the experiences of the people that work with it almost daily. I know here there's not political or monetary gain either way, it's all part of my research.

Thank you for your information, I do appreciate it.

Well, there have been suicide attempts with e-liquid. One woman drank 50 mils of 30mg/mL and was fine.

Eye protection. I've watched a few mopes get it in their eyes.

I always laugh at them.

I always laugh when it gets in their hair...oh, wait, what were we talking about? Nv mind.

I've got that covered! I'd hate to see what happens there, although it might be an interesting experience if you could remove the pain for a bit.

Idk how it happened, but it's the only time it happened. Literally one small drop went flying in an arc off of my syringe. Somehow a PERFECT arc. & it landed right in my left eye.

It went insta-blind, whited out, for about a minute. It fucking stung like a bitch.

That's pretty scary. Did you wash it out and were there any lasting effects?

by SnowDrifter_almost 10 years ago

Not for 100mg. I wouldn't huff it so to speak, but other than that you'll be fine. Gloves are good, but not required. If you get it on you just wash it off

I don't think you'll need any, I've never worn any.

Just mix up a smaller bottle of 60mg/ml, and use that. That way you aren't constantly freezing/thawing/opening your larger bottle. It isn't that dangerous, just don't drink it. Wash your hands after handling it, and don't spill it. Wear gloves if you must, I never have, but I only work with 60mg/ml.

You're generally getting good, practical advice here, but don't let your guard down. As a newbie that started with 100 2 weeks ago I recommend decent ventilation (big room or open window/vent) and the utmost care. Just because it won't Ki you doesn't mean it will be pleasant.

Since I mix 3mg or lower I will go 48mg next time just for peace of mind.

Do whatever makes you feel safe, you'll be less likely to make mistakes. If you're nervous, you're more likely to spill/splash. I used to always wear gloves and feel like I was handling nuclear waste, now I treat it like any liquid to be respected (bleach, drain cleaner, etc.) but one that I know the properties of, how it flows and how quickly; I don't necessarily worry about protection, just have access to running water if I get fumble-fingered. Honestly, now that I mentioned bleach & drain cleaner, you should be way more careful with those than nicotine, even 100mg/ml.

i wear glasses so i have eye protection but that's usually it. I wear gloves if i have a cut somewhere on my hands just in case. I highly suggest either diluting it, rebottling in smaller bottles, or both. unless you got a really small amount it'll take ages to go through it and that way you can freeze excess and not have to excessively thaw it

I plan on mixing it down to 50mg, but I only got 120ml to begin with.

1 points

by quixotic120almost 10 years ago

oh yeah unless you're mixing a TON that will take a while to go through. It's been almost 7 months since I ordered my 250ml and I still have like 1/3rd left

I've been using 100mg nic base for a little while now. I don't use any breathing protection but I'm still very careful with the base. Get yourself in the habit of always wearing gloves no matter what. Be mindful of any nicotine soaked paper towels around pets that might get into the garbage... If you have pets or children in the house, use common sense to keep them safe.

Just wear glasses, and if you have to smell it to make sure it's still good, waft it to your nose. Other than that you should be fine. I always keep a wet paper towel on hand in case I get some on my hands.

Get some small-ish needles, I use a 3ml syringe and take it slow when adding nc at high percentages, but other than that, avoid drips and touching it with skin and you should be fine.

Keep that shit in a freezer, away from light.. I've been using a 250ml bottle for the past year and it's no more oxidized more that it would have been if sitting on a shelf for a week.

I put my 100mg nic into a 30ml regular plastic juice bottle and labeled it clearly. When I mix, I just drip what I need into container. I rarely use any protection for this, I'll use gloves when refilling the 30ml bottle if anything.

Dang, how dangerous is this shit? I rubbed a tiny bit on my finger once and licked it just to see what it tastes like. I know that's not very smart but I was curious, didn't think it was super dangerous.

by KeggsNAalmost 10 years agoMixologist

It's not necessary, however I wear it because the facemask I use includes it. Really mouth protection is more so that I don't breathe into someone's bottle of juice.

Thanks! I'm ordering a bunch more stuff (YAY PAYDAY) and have heard mention of it before, and just wanted to make sure. I'd be more worried about the wife breathing into my juice than me breathing into hers... :P
