Opinion time. I think Walker, Vaping Ranger is a good guy with good intentions. However, I really think this first issue should have been free and used as an introduction to what he's wanting to accomplish. There's a lot of hype regarding him in almost every single aspect of what he does, and that's not necessarily a good thing. I've enjoyed most of his recipes and I think he contributes a lot to the community. Try to remember that everyone wants to make money from a hobby. That's just how we think.
I agree that the first issue was pretty light on information, especially the "in depth" review of CAP VC. We all know about it. I think about 90% of this issue was for people just starting out, which is why I think it should have been free. Then again, it was 2 bucks. Whatever.
Any time anything gets hyped like this, it falls out of popularity within a few months. I have a feeling the community will probably turn on him in some form or fashion, just like with HIC. I already see it happening. I really do wish him the best, but people need to stop treating him like a DIY god. It gives people a big ego and just ends in disappointment on both ends.

Because it's exactly the same thing. I never said it but have been thinking that forever, and people are finally starting to notice. Everybody here loves to hate on HIC and say his recipes are shit, but the way they're all on Wayne's dick all the time is the same. They're doing the same thing the guys over at VU were doing.

I'm not hating on Wayne, I personally don't give a shit. I won't buy his magazine because I don't care and I'll like some of his recipes and won't like some others, same as any other guy. I'm just saying there's lots of people here not realizing how ridiculously they're acting.

That might be your personal opinion but all the other flavors he uses besides the chocolate glazed donuts is what helps the recipe become complex and great. I've never personally tried Bronuts but the same is true of any highly regarded recipe that uses more than 1 or 2 flavors. It's the expertise or luck in finding the right combination of flavors that makes a recipe taste more than just average. I mean look at the Unicorn Milk leaked recipe, you "could" say that it's just CAP Sweet Strawberry being great but it's all those other flavors which add to the complexity. I personally like free information and I won't pay for the guy's magazine but there's zero need to criticize someone for trying to make money off something that he/she has become incredibly popular for being good at. I have zero issues with other hobby magazines or websites and I have zero issues with Wayne, I'll just be finding my information elsewhere. Anyone here who's ever paid for a magazine or information website of any kind, whether it's about gaming or fashion or something else, shouldn't be saying anything about this because it's the exact same thing.
Same, I'm not criticizing the fact that he sells the magazine I just don't care for it. People who purchased it have a right to criticize though.
I feel like you would know what I mean if you had tried Bronuts though. It's good but it makes me think "CAP's C.G.Donut is really good" a lot more than "omg Wayne let me blow you man". The same is not true for all popular recipes but that's just my two cents.

With all the technical stuff he was running into I think maybe the only reason it makes sense to charge is to make sure all the automation works. He said it was gonna be a light issue. I can't hack him for not releasing an amazing first one, and I think people should wait at least until the next one to start passing judgement. Like, he even said "this one is gonna be light, not much content, just trying to get everything set up" and now people are like "too light, not enough content." I can't even take these reviews seriously at this point.
It's amazing how the community will just discard someone in a moment, despite the countless hours they put in to provide amazing content that nobody else is willing or able to do. I'm surprised you guys haven't turned on fizz, botboy or returnity, but they're mods and that would be a bad move.

It's ironic that you say that individuals get "discarded" here in a moment. If my memory serves me correctly, you were the one who ran off with a dramatic goodbye post because of the title of someone's recipe.
If you want to know why no one was crying for you to come back, it's because you act like a pretentious asshole. The reason why the other names you mentioned don't get the same treatment as you is because they don't call the communities they belong to "pedophiles". Also, they don't start or stir up drama and are genuinely helpful people who know how to handle criticism well.
Don't forget the beer review! seriously though did this all happen just because one recipe got over hyped? And if you've been mixing for less than a year why would you try doing this?

For a somewhat more elaborate TLDR this is what's actually in the issue. I won't post actual content but I think posting an outline is fair as most magazines do this.
I use the term 'pages' loosely, as there are a lot of filler images that just take up space.
Two pages talking about the DIY ejuice scene ~1000 words.
Two pages talking about CAP Vanilla Custard ~690 words
One page of RDA reviews ~420 words
One and a half pages of a beer review ~470 words
Two pages of the author talking about himself (part 1, part 2 next issue) ~1480 words.
One page - recipe ~380 words.
I've given the page/word count as the writing and layout style is pretty constant throughout the issue, mainly to make the comparison of actual content against what I think most will find irrelevant. It's worth nothing there's a lot of 'fluff' that I think could be condensed down a lot.
It really, really has potential, but it needs a lot of work in all departments - graphic design, writing style, content, direction/target audience. To be brutally honest it was a very weak issue and I believe the author has shot himself in the foot by releasing this.
I get that it's hard to come up with content and a lot of time has been invested but it's been invested in the wrong places. Get a graphic designer on board. Take some writing lessons. Spend some time pulling together content. Read some real magazines. Homebrewing is similar to DIY eJuice in a lot of ways and what I can get for $3/issue there (and that's in print also) is a lot more substantial than this. This is not a personal attack on the author, and I hope if he reads this he takes it as constructive criticism. I think with some real time and dedication this could be a viable product that I would be happy to purchase, but in it's current state it's not much more than a pamphlet.
Perhaps if it had been marketed in a Patreon sort of sense - where this is bonus content you get for supporting him, it could have taken away some of the criticism he's receiving. I see a lot of success with that sort of thing - where a person launches a patreon for their videos on youtube, and offers bonus content to people who support them. By positing it as a magazine subscription, it automatically implies it's own set of expectations, which if not met, draw criticisms easily.

I think it would be good if he had just saved up a 6 months to a years worth of issues and released them as a ebook. If he was to do this I would probably buy it. In it's current state there's being too little information drip fed to the reader. Just looking at the CAP VC review there's so much he could have talked about but didn't. It's sort of like he's holding back forums posts that could have been in discussion here and selling them instead. I mean, whatever, good on him for trying, give it a shot, the market will decide at the end of the day.
I subscribed and bought the first issue. Haven't read it. Subscribed to support him for releasing amazing recipes.

I don't mind supporting those contributing here. I make regular donations to non-vaping sites that I'm a member of. I can think of one that I've donated at least $80 to this year. They don't ask me for it, but I do it because they consistently provide me top notch content that I have come to rely on. Just don't try selling me something and promise it's is so awesome and turns out to be crap. That's a rip off, not a donation. Wayne's ego has been inflated by many of the subs here and he's honestly spread himself too thin. There's no way he can keep up with everything he's set out to do. Maybe he should take it down a notch and be realistic. He's got the web site, the YouTube channel, the podcast, and the mag. Focus on one thing and make it great, then monetize that.
You're a businessman. How long can you keep customers loyal if you over-promise and under-deliver?

Ego is important in this community. In many cases it is what separates the winners from those who will only fantasize.
He has to try different methods to see what is most efficient and profitable. YouTube video income is poor even for those with 50,000 subscribers and a daily video. Magazines can be written over a month. It's an acceptable medium where he can gauge the market's willingness to fund more recipes and if he can make enough for the time spent, he can work on better video production later.
Being on camera is tough. For every cut that Rip does, he probably has ten bad ones. Editing takes experience, and time, and hardware.
I've been working on my own video series (10% vape related) since October. Still not happy with it, and I've spent hundreds of hours and probably thousands of dollars on production and sets and hardware.
Watch Rip's early videos. They suck. Now he has a following.
I know - I released a series of videos here last year. 9 or 10 and started a war between the mix by weight and mix by volume crowds. They were generally well accepted but I just didn't have time to keep up with it. Work, moved, family, etc. It's a lot of work and takes a bunch of time, I know....
Never seen the guy "over promise", he said in his vlog that some mag issues may not have as much content. If the guy is willing to put his own money and time into knowledge and testing that often then I don't think anyone can be disappointed at his work. The community is small as hell already and in the mean time the mag will help fund his work. How you going to say the dude has a big ego? The closest thing I ever heard his say is that he is an OG or a Vet. Which he has the right to do since he has been into this for awhile. Just because he has made some very nice ejuice mixtures and wants to somehow put more time into it doesn't make his head big. You can't play video games all day and night unless you are in your parent's basement or you are a twitch star. Same scenario... Time is money and no one ever said DIY has to mean Pro bono.

Umm, not to get into a huge debate here but you're not making much sense. How can you monetize a Youtube channel for DIY mixing? Not enough people in the game. Whose buying vaping podcasts? If he truly monetized the website then folks would be complaining about advertisements.
Also, exactly how did he over promise? He said that it would be a great magazine and it's been 5mins into a 60 minute football game. Is everything you do great as soon as you start? If I had a problem with his content then I'd message him. This public outcry only makes you look petty. Especially when you mock him by saying "I'm awesome." His personality doesn't even come close to telling me that. Am I missing something? From what I can see he seems like a very humble guy.
I try to be humble. I think the hype from some of my recipes make it look like there's too much attention on just me. I get it, everyone saw what happened to VU. What's weird is that there aren't many people doing anything for the DIY community, like none. So I don't care what people say or think, im still going to be putting out recipes, flavor notes, videos, podcasts, emagazines and whatever else I feel like. All I asked was for a small fee for the magazine. All my other content is free, remain free, and more free stuff to come. This is just another aspect to adding to this community because there's not much content out here for us. I'm sorry to anyone who didn't enjoy the first issue, I tried making it cheap enough where people didn't feel like they were taking a hit if they were disappointed.

I personally don't pay for past information or data if I can bootleg it freely. I also never sell information (everything I create is free for reuse by anyone for any reason).
I pay for future creativity. People pay me for future creation. My past works are dead to me because that labor is gone.
Wayne has a talent for making recipes. The other talents will come in time if he can afford the time. I'll be part of affording him that time. He deserves to succeed or fail on his merits and not on being hamstrung by lack of funding or free time.
Same here. For $36 a year I can support someone who seems genuinely invested in vaping. Are people really that up in arms over 2 or 3 bucks?

Regardless of all the BS that is being flung around about this issue, I really enjoyed it. I do think that it could eventually be a lot more professional once other writers start getting articles published, he gets an editor or two to look over the issue, and perhaps someone to look over the graphics and make it more aesthetically pleasing...but I mean come on guys, it's the first issue.
I thought the RDA advice was really great, so much so that I went on Ebay and bought both (fortunately they're super cheap, it was like $21 total).
The CAP discussion was interesting since I never really bothered to look up the differences between the two or look at them side by side.
I'll definitely keep supporting Wayne and his efforts. He seems like a good guy who just wants to help the community the best he can. Sure, this issue was a lot about him, but when you are just starting out with a magazine, you have to start somewhere. Writing isn't easy, especially when you are trying to appeal to a broad audience.
As someone new to DIY, I am excited for something like this. When I was searching for some recipes to order flavors for, all I heard about was Bronuts so I picked a couple of his recipes to use for ordering and enjoyed them That probably makes a bit biased.
That being said I subscribed and was a little disappointed in the first issue. I have faith that it will get better, but I'll cancel if it doesn't and I am only out a few bucks and hopefully took away some useful knowledge.
I also didn't care to the beer review, but I am a pretty unsophisticated drinker. Others may possibly enjoy it though.
I subscribed to Wayne on Youtube awhile back but almost immediately unsubscribed. After all the Bronuts hype and this I decided to go back and watch some videos, and see if maybe I was missing something. I can't make it all the way through any of his videos. They just lack substance; it sounds like he just makes them up as he goes along without any sort of game plan, and it gets repetitive and I had the feeling this magazine would be similar to his YouTube videos; I will at least be checking out the first issue.
What I do like about his videos is his enthusiasm and attitude you can tell he really loves doing this. I have nothing against him, and from his videos I gather he is a good guy with the best intentions for this community.
/u/enyawreklaw I think you are spreading yourself too thin for this DIY or DIE master plan that you have in your head. Two videos you've posted you mention work and other factors getting in the way (of making multiple videos a week and releasing your mag on time). So I have a few suggestions. 1) Focus on releasing a good product(video or magazine) maybe instead of a weekly magazine you could do a monthly one at least while you iron out all the kinks; you're putting your heart and soul into this so give yourself enough time to get it done right. 2) If you really are serious about making videos and writing a magazine take some classes at a community college in writing, journalism or something similar you can apply to DIY or DIE to help make it everything you want it to be.
That being said I resubscribed to your channel last night and won't be unsubscribing because I love your attitude and am interested to see how far you take this.
Edit: Reading now its not that bad and does have some good info, try to use I and me less. Also the top of page 7 is almost unreadable with the color scheme you chose for that page White background with pale yellow on top with white text over it.

I think the concept is a great and unique one. I definitely think the community could rally behind, but between this first issue and the first podcast it all feels a little half baked. I agree with others that the first issue would have been received better if it was free as an intro/preview of what's to come.
I subbed to the mag without a thought because in the vape community I'm accustomed to paying for potential. I buy flavors I've never tried in hopes they are good so why not sub and hope this gets better. I do hope it gets better, but a lot of that will be how truly community driven it can be. The more of the community that is alienated the less likely you are to get their input or contributions.

You have the option of single issue or monthly. I subscribed to the monthly. I got the download after subscribing. It was added to the page. I clicked cancel because I didn't want the payment to reoccur ... and my first issue access was revoked. I'm assuming that I won't be getting the others.
And while we're on that topic.....Does he really need my full address and telephone number for a product delivered electronically? Maybe for a CC processor .... but for payment via Paypal? I think not. Wonder what type of "free" offers I'll be getting now.
He's been building this thing up and pimping it all over the place. It was a let down in my opinion. Your opinion may differ. I think my $3 would have been better spent on a bottle of Capella's Crispy Bacon.
I am annoyed by the advertisement as well, i just wanted to make sure everyone stays level-headed.
Might aswell disclose my opinion, i do not care about it enough to buy it. It is not easy to describe flavours, but i feel (from the descriptions on his recipes), he is rambling too much.
I personally will continue to support him. He's dedicating his time and energy to share information. When i started DIY not too long ago I continued to find his information informative and useful.
A lot of people think he rambles useless information. However, that information is useful to some people. Since i come from a cooking background (and that seems to be a common occurrence) his drawn out explanations of his flavors are great to me.
His first issue is far from flawless, but it will only get better with time. I personally will reach out a helping hand to him when I can. I can't justify a stoning for a lousy $2
FWIW I must say, I have been working with Wayne A LOT lately. unfortunately I never got the time to help him write in the mag.
what I can say FWIW, is that wayne has some great Idea's and really is taking the steps to bring things to the next level. He works a regular job, records videos, does the podcast, AND is writing this mag.
being that it is the first edition, It was extremely difficult for him to not ruin the announcment of it, AND get other writers on board. Not to mention the technical difficulties he has been having.
Keep in mind, I haven't actually read the mag yet Don't^tell^wayne^lol
So everything I'm saying isn't to defend him or the content in the first edition. It's just to give a slight behind the scene with out giving away anything he wouldn't want me to leak. Literally just a FWIW comment on here. And to let you guys know the content CAN ONLY get better with new writers coming on board! :)
I enjoyed it and I'm eager to see it develop. It's a bit harsh to bash it on the first issue, especially if you're implying the bio info shouldn't be there - it's an introduction to who he is and why he does what he does. That's an appropriate article to have in the initial issue of a magazine that is being put out as a personal project.
I agree that it wasn't perfect; I like beer too but I think that review was unnecessary and just taking up space. But it was a great first effort, and good to see someone knowledgeable put something out like this. More than the magazine, I'm more curious about the Flavor Book. It doesn't appear we have access yet, but I do want to see the notes of someone who knows what they're doing and takes it seriously. Getting good information on individual flavors is such a crap shoot, and it's near impossible to get anything worthwhile from ELR.
If you want to wait a month, I'll be willing to buy you an issue to see if you like it then. You have to understand that he JUST launched the entire InTheMix project; it's going to need some time to ramp up. Hell, they are still gathering community writers for issues weeks down the road. Wait until they get a solid footing and I'll be happy to eat my words if it's still shit in later issue. Better yet, if the magazine stays shitty throughout the next 6-7 issues, I'll vape 10mL of 8% TFA Cheesecake.
We'll see. It certainly was rushed and half-assed. Not the way you want to release something. He's gotta get other things worked out...like for example, I cancelled, and immediately lost access to the issue which leads me to believe I won't get the other three I paid for either.

What this mag is about, is important. Regardless of the content in the beginning, it is supposed to grow into a collaboration. Don't believe the hate Wayne. Stay strong.
