im never happy with most of the recipes I mix even though I get them from e-liquid-recipes. There have been a total of 3 I've been happy with, the rest I've poured out. I hate wasting like that. At this rate it's cheaper to buy juice. I mix by weight, use quality ingredients I just don't like the recipes I've chosen I guess. I'm getting very discouraged.
Gamgam, don't get discouraged. ELR isn't really the best place for recipes, try searching around here in the monthly threads for a recipe you like. I find that people here have a better grasp of how to make good flavors. Not to mention they're more likely to get feedback and suggestions here.
That's what everyone is saying. And here I thought these people that made their recipes public were awesome mixers. I'm gonna stick with recipes from the sub. I see that you good mixers are always making suggestions and offering pointers to tweak the recipes that are posted here. Thank goodness for y'all!
And when you find a recipe here that you like try some others from the same mixer as you may have similar palates, for example, everything I've mixed by fizzmustard has been great.
ELR is the greatest collection of the crappiest recipes I've ever come across. I don't know why so many people feel the need to make their 2-3 ingredient, 1 attempt-only recipes public. Even sorting by ratings brings some crappy recipes to the top. The BEST place for recipes is /r/DIY_eJuice and the good news is that you are already here! Don't be discouraged, anyone with a bit of passion and patience can start making great recipes. Get to know your ingredients and use your brain.
On a side note, how amazing is it when you make 3 crappy recipes in a row and feel like quitting, and then you make one amazing recipe and feel like opening up a juice line! Love the DIY rollercoaster...
I have admitted many times that i am an atrocious DIYer as well , nothing wrong with being God awful at recipe making .
Most friends i have given juice to won't talk to me anymore and a few mentioned it was the most grotesque vape they have ever experienced.
Thats after much improvement on my part.
What the hell did you make for your friends haha
I don't know but apparently it was God awful tasting e juice . They won't even talk to me anymore .
I'm actually curious as to what you've concocted. The worst I've tasted was a mix of Pecan French Vanilla and +1. The taste was literally burning plastics/chemical
Lol well at least we can admit our faults. You made me laugh out loud! I needed that, I thought this would be easy! I'm gonna keep plugging away, shoot I have to, I have about 700 worth of DIY stuff here. I just hope I continue to win giveaways so I'll have something decent to vape!
Everything i have come up with on my own has been horrific , the key is finding a popular proven recipe and follow it .
Easier said then done , so many recipes out there that you just can't tell if it's going to be worth it or if it's going to be another waste of nic and flavoring.
I won't even bother with a recipe now unless it gets glowing reviews from a bunch of people.
I agree - you gotta really be selective with recipes on ELR. People make anything public why idk. I keep mine private till I think they are good enough to be made public. Then there are the people who post and rate their recipes 5 stars. Although the guy who runs the site told me he likes when ppl rate their recipes - I don't. I think it should be obvious if you're posting it you think it's good and if you don't think it's 5 star worthy don't post it! Maybe I think too simply. Look for recipes with lots of reviews and comments. And I agree the monthly recipes here are usually pretty good (look at the comments!)
I have found with e-liquid recipes, in general, you don't necessarily know what set up the author of the recipe was using. One of the first recipes I made was a choc-mint off there. I subohm drip only, and all I could taste was potent mint. The recipe was probably designed for Protanks and such. So silly question, you are looking at the rating of the recipes? Because there's obviously so much crap there, so you really do need to try the ones that are at least rated highly. And then look at the dates - so you know if it was created when we were all using old Protanks, or if the recipe was designed for the newer set-ups. You can sort of get an idea by how high the ingredient percentage - generally speaking, the higher the percentage, the more likely its an old recipe designed for older hardware. And honestly, its all about perseverance. I've been DIY'ing for over 6 months, and still only like around a handful of the recipes I use.
I was really looking at the higher rated recipes but they usually didn't have comments. Now I learn that they can rate their own recipes. Then I would check ingredients to see if I liked them. But no, I never checked the date. It never even dawned on me. Maybe that's why some were so strong. :(
And like soooooo many other folks, 3 of my adv are the Nana Cream clone, Bronuts and Mustard Milk, all there. When my own recipes are sucking, I go back to those sure bets.
I have 2 of those made and both are great so today I'm making the nana cream clone.
Last night, or rather early this morning I think I accidentally stumbled on a s successful original recipe. If it holds up, it will be my first mix that didn't suck. Crossing my fingers.
I don't know if I'm pointing out the obvious here, but I didn't actually know this for awhile lol.... You click the rating column, like so > http://e-liquid-recipes.com/list?exclsingle=0&sort=score&direction=desc , and it arranges the recipes by highest rank. And those high ranked ones have plenty comments. Some of those top ones are recipes from folks from this sub.... Which is the "best" DIY community I've come across, recipe wise.
Trust me when I say it takes time. I'm only just now getting recipes that I create where I am truly happy with the results. I've made probably around 15-20 unique creations and I'm realistically only happy with about 3 or 4 (the others are vapeable but I'm not proud of them necessarily).
Once you get your FLV flavors in I'd bet you have an easier time. Their flavors are top notch and really easy to mix with. Plus, the FLV recipes thread has some seriously good stuff in it!
granma-ma
keep oreo's vanilla custard, bronuts, and mustard milk on rotation.
work your ass off until you find a recipe you make that you like.
profit??
I saw the Oreos Custer that looks good, and of course I made it was a success,I've not made the mustard milk because I'm really sick of strawberry,I wonder if I could change it to blueberry?
I'm going to keep working at it I enjoy it even though it didn't sound like it last night.I was overtired and my knees hurt and I couldn't taste one of the juices I had made,it had no flavor.
I read that grandma ma in the voice of the Adams family I think it was. LOL
FW blueberry might be good at the same percentage.
Mustard milk, I get the strawberry notes but it kind of just sweetens the ice cream for me. I don't vape it and think wow thats intense strawberry. Maybe on the first day or so, but after that its mostly just milky goodness
Almost all the recipes I've ever made from ELR were some of the worst I've ever had. Some of the best ones are from my head right on the spot. My 2¢, stick with the ones here or fuck those recipes on ELR and make your own. With a short time of making/trying other peoples recipes on ELR, I now know why people have the "Why Does My eJuice Suck?" posts......it's just a shitty mix to begin with!
What store bought juices do you like?
Fruity, sweet, dessert stuff. I love cyclops vapor, just discovered GordonaVapes. Ya know, the good stuff! Lol
Well I got aome good news and some bad news.
Good news: We have similar taste! I LOVE creams, and desserts are a close runner-up. Fruits always have a place on my palate haha!
Bad news: Creams, custards, and anything like that, take a LONG time to steep. I would suggest looking up faster steeping methods. I personally use the "hot water bath" a few times to speed steep my creams and whatnot.
Also, if you use ELR to find recipes, look for the highest rated, AS WELL as ones with more than a few ratings. Reading the comments of the recipes are important too! I found "Campfire Clone" to be a tasty and sweet juice. Uses marshmallow, graham cracker, and chocolate. Simple, but steeping is required. Also, look up the higher rated "Milk & Honey" recipes. I haven't made one yet, but they sound amazing!
I know all about discouragement. I did the same thing before I found my new home here in DIY E-juice.
I hated making shitty recipes, even after researching to see if the flavorents had better alternatives in other lines, trying to figure out if it would work better in a tank, etc - so much research.
So one day, I decided eff it. I just started making shit up. I used to design fragrances for my own bath products line, I know how to cook and how flavors interplay with with each other, so I figured what could go wrong? At least i'd be failing at the shit that I made up, not some idiot who posted it because they were super excited to post something.
I have had two successes, three "tweakables" and one horrible, horrible failure (which was my fault for believing another website about a flavor from TFA instead of searching HERE for the impressions of it) It's still a better track record than using other people's recipes.
Just start throwing some stuff together, use the recipes here as other's have suggested, and go from there. Remember: You're not terrible, the recipes you are using are! =D
Thanks for the encouraging words! I'm a good cook but it doesn't seem to translate to mixing. I think I'm going to take your advice and go for my own mix and see what happens.
> I'm a good cook
It's more like baking than cooking. Some of the best cooks I know are also the worst bakers.
I always browse the monthly recipe threads and the best of 2014 thread. You will find something you like. I would say about 60% are great 30% are meh, need to be tweaked to my liking and remaining 10% I would never mix again. Pick one with upvotes and responses
I know the feeling. I've only been DIYing for 9 months but I've made exactly ONE recipe that I found online that I didn't tweak the crap out of, if I ever made anything remotely resembling it ever again. No, I haven't tried bronuts or mustard milk yet but one day that order will arrive.
I keep trying other people's recipes though. It teaches me about new flavor interactions that I can use when I slap some stuff together of my own.
I thought I was the only one that was having problems with it . I haven't made mustard milk either but I'm going to make some tonight. I'm just going to start over and do basic simple recipes and go from there.
You are not alone, not by a long shot. I spent a long time mixing 8-11 flavor mixes and now some of my faves are 3 or 4. Finding the right building blocks is the hard part and mixing other people's recipes (and reading tons of flavor reviews) helps me find them.
Honestly Ive never made a recipe Ive like off elr, or really any recipe anywhere. This is the only sub that I can make a recipe from and enjoy it, or 95% of the time I tweak it to my personal preferences. Dont give up yet! Its taken me 4 years to have over 10 recipes I think are perfect and can vape all the time. And the hard part is my taste is changing all the time so Im constantly having to make new juices to satisfy my picky tastes buds. If you already found 3 recipes you like then you arent doing too bad! It also took me a long time to build up an arsenal of really solid flavors, it took a lot of buying shitty ones to find the gems. DIY is so worth it in the end, it can be frustrating at times though!
I'm totally enjoying it even though I get really frustrated at times. I'm not going to give up. The 3 recipes I've had success with weren't my own though. Although I think I had a tiny breakthrough this morning. FLV is the shit! Lol if that's what it takes for me to make good flavors, I'll do without something else to get them.
I just started on diy. The first few i did, are probably going into the garbage. I was trying to mix flavors, and it wasnt working out. I didnt use recipes, and my stuff was basic. Like 1/3 tobacco and 2/3 mint, stuff like that. Anyways, ive been mixing all my flavors by themselves, and basically adding some together in the tank each time i fill it up. A lot of flavors are stronger, some taste like ass by themselves, some are better by themselves. I dont know, i have been having good success so far doing it that way. And when i really like something, i write it down. And after i place my next order i will probably make 60 mls, solo flavors, and just mix them together in 15s after i look at my notes from my in-tank experimenting. Keep your chin up!
Definitely don't get discouraged, everyone makes shitty recipes at first. My biggest recommendation is that whenever you want to use a flavor you haven't used in something just try searching it. I do this every time I get new flavors and it gives me a good idea on single flavor % and what to mix it at with other things. Also can't recommend Fizz's 'Nana Cream enough, definitely my lazy DIY go to, 3 flavors and tastes great.
