Alternative uses for flavoring
submitted about 10 years ago by Grehg

I was just wondering if anyone here has used their flavoring for non ejuice. I was thinking about trying to make gum or hard candies and was curious if anyone of the subreddit had any experience.

E juice with only pg and no nicotine will work well for refilling air wick style air fresheners

E Juice with only PG and nicotine without flavoring will work well for pepper spray.

I never thought of this either! I'm glad I made this post as all of these uses are very interesting! Is the viscosity similar to the store bought equivalent?

It IS the store bought stuff. Look at the ingredients list on the label. Pg, flavors, water.

Basically, if it has pg in it we pay a 1000% markup.

Why is that? PG is pretty cheap.

I do this. It's the wicks you have to replace though or you run a fire risk. You can find them online pretty cheap though.

Candy usually needs flavor oils to keep the flavor homogenized during the heating process. Eliquid flavors can work but they're weak.

Gum can work too but usually gum flavorings have a powder base to keep flavor lasting.

I make coffee and tea flavorings.

Oh interesting, I did not know that.

Tea flavorings? That's an incredible idea that I never thought of! What's your favorite tea flavoring that you've made so far?

I make my own concentrates by hand and I have a lovely "shui mi tao" flavor (imagine peach and honey). Throughout development I had a lot of failures so I add those to tea, especially iced tea. So good. My neighbors are friendlier since I started giving them 1.5L bottles of the stuff.

I also make a decent sugar free lemon sour iced tea and hot tea with my sour lemon concentrate.

Yum.

Very interesting, I might try this out. Thanks for the inspiration!

Incase you didn't know.. In Chinese, shui means water, mi means honey (feng mi) and tao means peach (tao zi)

A drop of FA hazelnut goes into my coffee every morning.

I've also just become interested in the DIY Soylent "movement".

I've wanted to get into soylent for a once or twice a day meal, while eating other stuff for dinner, but most people say the flavor is hard to change. Putting some flavorings in may actually be a good solution.

Not diy related but what the hell is soylent and why is it so expensive. Google is'nt giving me very specific answers.

Soylent is a powdered drink mix you buy and mix at home. A lot of people use it as their only food source. It's basically a protein shake you drink a few times a day.

My favorite so far is to add 4 drops of strawberry ripe in 1/4 cup of crepe batter. Mix it up and cook it. Adds a very nice natural strawberry flavor.

Well, I was thinking like bubble gum vodka, but sure. If that's what makes your day better.

TPA Kentucky Bourbon + FA Oak Wood + Vodka, and you've got yourself some cheap whiskey.

I've added flavors to 7-Up and ginger ale. If you had carbonated water and a sweetener you could make your own pop/soda.

Could it work to flavor regular water? I always buy those little MIO water enhancer things, but could I use these to make my own?

by MMMpatientabout 10 years ago

Yep! I do this all the time... basically makes a better tasting, cheaper Propel

Is it sweet enough, or do you add EM or anything? How much do you use for, say, 16oz?

1 points

by MMMpatientabout 10 years ago

a few drops? just start with a drop and add to taste. I haven't thought to put any sweetener in, but try it out!

I mean, how bad could you really mess it up right?

They work really well in pancakes! Try it.

I've been thinking the same thing this week. What is the intended/original use for the flavours?

Well ejuice is technically an alternative for the flavorings we use.

Ex dunkin Donuts employee here. Any non sweetened flavoring (eg: caramel, hazelnut, french vanilla, coconut flavor shots--NOT the swirls, which are loaded with sugar) are just PG and flavoring. Probably about 2 ml per 8 ounce cup of coffee (give or take... we used a pre-calibrated dispenser). Same with the raspberry, peach, and blueberry flavorings for iced tea.

2 points

by cloney12about 10 years ago

Same for Starbucks when I worked there too.

by beezwacksabout 10 years agoOne of "The Damned"

Maybe it was the sweetener, but Sbux syrup is definitely thicker than just PG, don't you think? (also ex-barista)

1 points

by cloney12about 10 years ago

Oh, I messed up. It's not just flavoring and pg. I'm sure there is other stuff in it, but I remember a few months back looking it up and discovered that it was pretty standard flavor concentrates/pg etc

I've added some of my peppermint flavors to hot chocolate before.. Stuff is BOMB

by seabterryabout 10 years agoMixologist

From what I understand you can use them to flavor your ice cream when you make it at home.

Can you point me to where I can get more 411 on this? Looking for amounts to use.

The flavor concentrates are all food grade. I might have been known to add a few drops of orange to my coke or some chocolate to my coffee.
