Hey all,
So I've been searching through the subreddit looking at different reviews for Flavorah (FLV) flavors, and I'm wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of their personal favorites from the line?
So far on my list I have Boysenberry, Blueberry, Cured Tobacco (I'm guessing that's the Flue Cured Tobacco some people have referenced), Pink Guava (on the fence about this one), and Vanilla Custard. Any other recommendations/reviews on these or other flavors would be great!
Thanks!
EDIT: So I ended up going a little overboard (I'm sure you can relate), and got-
- Banana
- Boysenberry
- Blueberry
- Coconut (ouch my wallet)
- Cream
- Cured Tobacco
- Peach
- Peanut Butter
- Pink Guava
- Rich Cinnamon (ouch my wallet v2)
- Strawberry
- Vanilla Custard
Feel free to let me know what you think of any of these, or their other flavors!
I could go ALL day about flavorah; I love their flavors and use them very frequently. If I had to choose the must haves, they would be:
Peanut Butter
Blueberry
Boysenberry
Rich Cinnamon
I'd also HIGHLY recommend vanilla custard, banana, and sweet coconut. I've got a few other of their flavors that I haven't played around with much. I also really enjoy their black cherry in a tobacco mix I'm working on.
Do you have them straight or mixed into other recipes? What percentage do you mix them at?
I've mixed most of them into recipes; only done standalones on a couple for notes. Peanut butter and vanilla custard are both great standalone. In mixes, blueberry and boysenberry are so damn good, as is rich cinnamon. I can't recommend them enough. So good.
What about the regular coconut? I hear a lot of good things about that one. I can only get one of the $12 due to my budget, so I'm not sure whether to go with rich cinnamon or the coconut one. I have CAP coconut already, but I hear this is different.
I skipped the regular coconut due to the price tag and went with sweet coconut, so I can't say. If it means anything, I really enjoy their sweet coconut. I can't recommend rich cinnamon enough. It's stupid potent; anything over 0.5% and other flavors will get dominated. I fraaking love it though. It has that authentic cinnamon bite and it's amazing.
That's very tempting. I'll have to look over some recipes and see where cinnamon might fit in. I know botboy uses the regular coconut in a few of his recipes so that, alongside some positive reviews, is why I was leaning that way.
Honestly, as much information or opinions you can provide me on flavorah stuff the better! Right now in my cart I have:
- Milk & Honey
- Vanilla Custard
- Boysenberry
- Blueberry
- Strawberry
- Coconut ($12)
- Cream (I figured it might be useful, idk since I already have Sweet Cream TPA) *Pink Guava (on the fence)
- Cream de Menthe (again on the fence)
The regular coconut is a thick, creamy coconut that goes great with creams and pastries. I LOVE this flavor because of the butter taste it carries without any DA/A/AP. It tastes like if you grabbed a warm coconut off the beach, cracked it open, and spooned out the flesh.
Sweet coconut is more in line with tropical mixes, and works well with fruits.
Black Cherry Tobacco? You have my attention... wanna share? I could really go for that kind of mix right now, especially if you're using FLV Cured Tobacco in it!
Edit: Impatience & impulse took over, and I just mixed this up:
ToBlacko v1
-
FLV Cured Tobacco - 4.00% (less will fade out after a 1.5-2 weeks IME)
-
FLV Virginia Tobacco - 1.00% (fills out & supports the Cured Tobacco)
-
FLV Black Cherry - 0.75% (shot in the dark starting %, i hardly use this)
-
FLV Vanilla Custard - 0.75% (adds creamy body/base notes)
-
TFA Vanilla Swirl - 2.00% (vanilla sweetness)
-
INW AM4A - 0.25% (adds complexity, including plum notes)
-
FLV Clove - 0.25% (waiting on this to show up, but this addition sounds epic). FA Clove+FA Cardamom at 1-2 drops each per 15mL might be good too.
I'm just mixing this up now, so please share yours too if you'd like, as I've got no clue where this one will land but I want to work on it.
Haha! Well I haven't used FLV's tobaccos, so I can't comment on them. When I have my notes in front of me, I'll PM you the recipe. A couple thoughts on your recipe:
Virginia tobacco might be a touch high, depending on what you're going for. I use FA Virginia tobacco, and it really has a spice kick to it, so I rarely go over 0.33 to 0.5%, but that's me. Do you want the black cherry to be a dominant flavor? I think I use it @ 1.5% and I love it there. For a cream/ base note, I think that's just the right amount of custard. I use French vanilla deluxe instead of vanilla swirl, but it sounds like you're thinking the same way I am. I can't comment on clove.
I tried their Peanut Butter, Milk &Honey and Cereal Crunch and can't say I enjoyed any of them. Heard good things about their Vanilla Custard but Im already happy with the OB clone which is basically Cap VC with Cheesecake Graham Crust
If you don't mind explaining, what about those ones did you not enjoy? I have Milk and Honey in my cart right now, and someone above recommended Peanut Butter.
I appreciate it!
I found that they all almost a chemical taste to them and tasted pretty harsh. I started ff mixing them at 4% and worked my way up to 8%, by which point they were almost too strong enough but still unpleasant.
Out of all of them Peanut Butter did taste like what I'd expect it too, but like I say, the weird chemical tone put me off.
I'm actually interested to see what % others use and if there's a way I could find a way to enjoy them (finding a recipe with them in) rather than writing them off and letting it go to waste.
EDIT: I'll put them through the dripper tonight and let you know what I think that actually taste like.
I noticed in another comment that you wanted something like CF Milk & Honey, and can say this isn't really anything like it. I found a clone for that some months back, but even that wasn't close to the original, but made a nice vape.
After a little bit of searching, it seems like between 2-4% is standard for Peanut butter (a lot of people seem to like this one).
As for Milk and Honey, far less people seem to be using it. 1.5-3% was what I saw on a few recipes.
Cereal Crunch was a little more varied, mostly due to whether it was the main cereal base or just an additive. ~3% for a base, 0.5% was what I saw for an additive.
You started too high. Try them at 2% and go up from there.
edit: as a rule of thumb with any manufacturer, if it tastes chemically, that's because you're using too much. For example, any citrus flavors used too high will taste like cleaning products, or pesticides because they essentially are; they use the terpene family of hydrocarbons to get their aroma, which is also the family that conifers and some species of insects use to fend off insects and predators. Also turpentine is a collection of terpene compounds. This example can be broadened to all flavors, they are all just chemicals.
I thought their Cereal Crunch had huge potential to add a bready doughy flavor to another mix, it wasn't what I was expecting at all (which was something like TFA Berry Crunch) and wasn't good on its own, but it was really unique and added an interesting body/mouth feel to the vape.
Yeah, I think I'll have to look around and see if there's any recipes that I could mix them into. Need to update my ELR list and see what comes up on there.
I was told the Milk & Honey is different to the Cosmic Fog Milk and Honey but was open to something similar so tried it out. It tasted sweet but no real flavour to it. I'll try it again on the dripper tonight and provide a better review.
Boysenberry is really great, one of their best flavors.
Coconut is a must have in my opinion if you want to bring some depth to your cream flavors.
Peach is more like peach rings than any other peach I've tasted; not a realistic peach, but good nonetheless.
Pink Guava is fantastic in any fruit mix.
Strawberry is more like strawberry jam, I still believe TFA strawberry is much better, and INW wild strawberry blows it out of the water.
Vanilla Custard is more like pudding as others have stated. It's a light custard, but a great base for creams.
Must-have flavors (truly amazing and/or unique & unsubstitutable): Blueberry, Cured Tobacco, Peanut Butter, Boysenberry, Rich Cinnamon, Coconut, Vanilla Custard, Pink Guava (grapefruit) & Wild Melon (Honeydew-type).
Other excellent flavors that narrowly missed the must-have list: Virginia Tobacco, Yogurt, Milk & Honey, Peach, Caramel, Coffee, Creme de Menthe, Cream, Crunch Cereal, & Banana.
Flavorah really doesn't have any bad flavors (though they do have some I just don't really use or need). I really like them as a flavoring company: They're a US-based, community-focused startup, formulating their flavors specifically for e-liquid applications. The only major playing in the flavor industry who does anything close to that is FlavourArt, my other favorite supplier. But /u/flavorah actually participates in the community & listens to our input, and he shares what information he can about the flavors Mother Murphy's compounds for them, and that means a lot in my book (if you've dealt with Cloudmaker or SmogDistro, you know I work the same way). The fact that they seem to have dedicated their flavor development process to specifically making flavors that offer truly different & unique profiles on common flavorings is what has really set them apart, though. I can't wait to see what they've got in store next. Speaking of which, Brendan is actually supposed to call me today!
Wow! Thanks so much for the detailed response. I'm happy that I got all but one on your must own list, and a few in the excellent category. I'm really looking forward to trying them out and having some fun. And yeah, /u/flavorah seems pretty cool from the posts I've read. I was happy to support the company with my limited DIY dollars :P.
Vanilla Custard, I just can't get it. I don't get any custard notes out of it even after a week steep. Like nothing. Fresh it has this weird taste that I used to associate with really cheap and nasty juices.
Current mix is what everyone was suggesting:
FLV Vanilla Custard - 5%
TFA Vanilla Swirl - 1%
I had the highest hopes for this one too.
Hm. Interesting, considering that's the one flavor it seems everyone really adores.
personal favorites:
Their caramel flavor is unique, it pops out a bit while being slightly creamy, fantastic if you enjoy flavored coffee vapes and ry4 tobaccos. I use it if I want stronger caramel flavor, rather than as a sweetener/with a hint of it using FA.
should you ever want to make something that incorporates chocolate/mint creme de menthe is nice, absolutely perfect base.
vanilla custard for me works better a light percentages to impart light vanilla milk-creaminess, start at 0.5-1% for cereal with milk type recipes. Personally not a fan using it as a dominant flavor but taste is subjective. Has a fairly nice effect on the body.
boysenberry is very jammy, make great additions to bakery/pie type flavors.
cured tobacco is really nice, has a little sweetness to it on the exhale with a slightly ashy and smokey taste. Lacks body though and will need to fill in gaps with other flavors. agreeable mixer with other tobaccos flavors.
Their new yogurt is interesting, can be used as a dominant flavor in a yogurt recipe or very lightly to make a more authentic milk taste, still believe you have to request a sample in your order.
Interesting, thank you for your feedback! I was considering Milk & Honey as another possibility, since I do enjoy that type of flavor profile. Do they send you samples alongside your order? I've been trying to figure out whether it's better to order directly through them or through GremlinDIY.
I really like their peach if you're into that. Their $10 cinnamon is supposed to be good as well. There was a user here once who has unfortunately deleted his account, named redruffnsore who did some great reviews on the flavors. You might be able to find some of them using the search bar
Thanks! I saw his thread but all it contained was a period mark and nothing else, and then a bunch of deleted replies.
I also really like their Peach, it's a good standalone. I know the was some disappointment a while ago when people were getting Blueberry Muffin instead of Blueberry in sample packs they used to sell, but I really really like FLV's Blueberry Muffin, it's the only single flavor recipe I've mixed up a 30ml bottle of.
His last review was on vanilla custard. From that link you can get to his other ones.
custard. nuff said.
Just going to put up a little more hype for you while you wait for vapemail about Pink Guava, Boysenberry, and Rich Cinnamon!
I take it you are a fan? I need to find some FLV recipes that use what I got :).
I use them with others and I'll have to get back to you when I get off work, but Blueberry muffin, pink guava, and cure fired tobacco are great standalone. If you have ANY bakery flavors add a drop of Rich Cinnamon. Yes, ONE DROP PER 30ml, lol. Start from there then add drop my drop per your liking There is a damn good reason it's $13/15ml, it will last you a lifetime lol. I absolutely love it as it really enhances any type of crust you are going for. Just stared work on a peach cobbler and man, it really mixes well with FA peach aswell.
