DIY Juices taste like d*ck
submitted about 10 years ago by headshotmasta

Hey guys,

So I've been DIYing for over a month. But I can never get my juices on point; they never turn out to taste like anything normal. Even simple recipes like strawberry milkshake. Hell, even single flavour recipes don't taste anything like the flavour smells like.

So what the hell is going on? I mixed up some strawberry cheesecake, a simple 9.5% graham crust cheesecake 5.5% ripe strawberry 1% sweet cream and it has the aftertaste of horse manure. I followed all the instructions he posted for the recipe, shaking it once a day, leaving the cap off, steeping for 2-4 days. It tastes like garbage yet has a rating of 4.5 stars.

NONE OF MY RECIPES COME OUT THE WAY THEY SHOULD.

Manufacturing process:

I mix everything in the bottles they're stored in [plastic ones.]

I put the nicotine in first.

Then I put in the VG.

Then I put in the PG.

Then I put in the flavourings.

But they taste shitty.

So can anyone tell me what's going on here? Thanks

I for one am impressed that you're so keen to tell everyone in this sub that you know what dick tastes like.

Not personally, no. I just asked your mother.

Well, in all fairness, most mom's probably know what dick tastes like.

But some moms know that flavor a lot better than others do.

Just ask yours. She's very familiar

by cjinctabout 10 years ago

Are you shaking your flavorings before you use them?

Also, I find that anything with cheesecake/custards need to 'age' at least 2 weeks. I usually let them age for a month. Though I can't imagine 9.5% GC Cheesecake would ever taste good. Maybe 3-4%

2 points

by headshotmastaabout 10 years ago

I shake them after mixing and every day when steeping. I leave the cap off when steeping.

13 points

by cjinctabout 10 years ago

No, I meant shake the flavor bottles before you use them. I treat them all as if they're bottles of italian dressing - just as you wouldn't add dressing to your salad without shaking it first, you should shake the bottle of flavor before adding to your mix.

3 points

by br3orabout 10 years ago

You also should not leave the caps off while steeping. Breathing for a few hours is fine but you want it capped. It's probably growing shit in your juice if you just left it open somewhere.

What brands are you using of flavoring? This sounds like it's really heavy on the graham crust to me. If it's TFA, it might be okay, but if it's something like FA you're using way too much flavoring.

Pour out 10mL of VG, taste that. Then add 1 or 2 mL of PG, taste that. Then put the nicotine in. Taste the unflavored juice. Then add flavorings 1 at a time to see what's going on.

Second, have you kept an older batch and tried it after steeping for a week? I vape a lot of Tiger's blood, and it's barely yellow if not clear when i first make it but turns amber in color after a week of steeping.

Third, how thoroughly are you shaking it? Are you using warm VG to mix? Are you using fresh cotton? Are you mixing in a relatively clean space? Are you washing your hands before mixing? I'd recommend adding nicotine to PG and mixing so it is a bit more homogenous after mixing.

If it's every single recipe, chances are you have bad VG, PG or nic. Tasting each of these separately (don't taste raw concentrated nicotine) will tell you where the problem is.

Ok guys, thanks for all the responses. I really appreciate the interest this thread has generated. And it's kind of comforting because I was about ready to throw my DIY stuff out the window. It has been pretty frustrating so far.

So I just 'taste tested' the VG and the PG I've been using for the past month. Yesterday I got a litre of new VG through the mail. I will try to describe the flavours as best I can:

PG - Very bitter. Very much like dandelion sap.

VG - Somewhat sweet, but has a definitive bitterness to it which becomes more pronounced over time in the after-taste. The sweetness gives way to bitterness.

VG I just got in the mail - Tastes like cotton candy, candyfloss. No evil after-taste. Very sweet.

I won't try the Nic :P

The old VG tastes very dissimilar to the new VG I've just picked up. So if only one component has gone bad, it's the VG. However, I don't know what PG is supposed to taste like and if the nicotine is good. So all I can conclusively assert is that the VG I got through the mail tastes markedly better than the old stuff I was using. Which is a start, I guess.

I have been storing my ingredients in a cool dark place.

I measure using 10ml and 1ml syringes.

So what's the best course of action here? I could mix up some juice with the new VG [no PG or nic] to see if that was the problem. Flavourlist:

Imgur

Any suggestions for a really simple nic-free max VG recipe?

Edit: Have just put together some 90% new VG 10% vanilla bean ice cream to commence taste testing and comparisationary procedurisms.

My ADV since I started DIYing is Cap Vanilla Custard, TFA Peanut Butter, and hazelnut (pretty sure its CAP, not at home right now), all at 3.5%. You have the custard, and a different PB. Might be worth giving it a try, I haven't had a single person dislike this combo yet.

by KevinStoleyabout 10 years agoProud Sidebar Reader!

Whenever you get a chance could you post this exact recipe please, I have Cap Vanilla Custard, TFA Peanut butter and about 4 different Hazelnuts. I just got all these flavors in and that sounds like a tasty recipe I'd love to try.

Been looking for some good hazelnut recipes since I started DIY.

2 points

by itekkabout 10 years ago

Sure thing, I'll do it as soon as I get home, hour or so.

2 points

by itekkabout 10 years ago

I was right, its 3.5% each CAP Vanilla Custard, TFA Peanut Butter, and CAP Hazelnut. I've been mixing at 70/30 with 3% nic.

I've used both vanilla custard v1 and v2. I think V2 was slightly better, but I can't say the difference is very noticeable. It's good for shake and vape, better with a half hour in the ultrasonic, also steeps well enough with just a shake and sitting for a couple days.

Like I said, I haven't found anyone that didn't like it, so let me know what you think!

My pg has never tasted bitter, that seems off.

1 points

by squeeshkaabout 10 years ago

What brand pg, vg, and nic are you using?

1 points

by headshotmastaabout 10 years ago

I bought a 'Gold' DIY mixing kit from The Alchemists Cupboard. It would have been a lot cheaper to buy the stuff separately but I didn't. I am now buying VG from Amazon.co.uk. So I don't know what brand the VG/PG/Nicotine is :(

3 points

by catdumplingabout 10 years ago

Hmm, that's odd about the PG. It's usually faintly sweet and maybe little bitter (certainly not enough to make you cringe or anything), but mostly just flavorless. If yours tastes like dandelion sap, that might be the problem. FWIW, I just tasted a drop of my own PG to verify I was remembering the flavor correctly (and keep in mind my bottle is almost a year old, so part of any minor "off" flavors in mine aren't indicative of a brand new bottle. Still barely tastes like anything though.)

The new VG you got sounds like it tastes proper: VG is sweet, but otherwise also mostly flavorless. I'd toss your old VG if it tastes bitter, that doesn't sound right.

With that recipe I would have to say the cheesecake. I would try it around 3%

2 points

It's every recipe I ever try. Even those posted by well known community members. Even simple 'foolproof' recipes of two ingredients.

1 points

by ertttabout 10 years ago

Best advice I ever got was to start with one flavor at a time. Find your sweet spot for your star flavor. So let's say strawberry. Start at 5% and see what you think. Go up and down and take notes. Then add ur second flavor like cheesecake. If you want something to be a base start low. Add 1 % to your strawberry. Then maybe 2%. It's a process, gotta be patient or you will fail. Took a lot of us a long time to realize that I'd assume.

"DIY Juices taste like dck" Correction, YOUR "DIY Juices taste like dck." And you can say dick here btw. No need to sensor. What brand of PG/VG/Nic are you using? Are you sure that you're not cross contaminating flavors? What are some other recipes you've tried? The percentages in that recipe sound bad just looking at them.

Watch this video first https://youtu.be/1ytu2ErgDHg after that I would recommend you taste test pg only, vg only, nic with the pg/vg you mixed and then if all tastes good you know your base is fine test your flavors individually at lower % and increase to know what they taste like over diluted and over concentrated. This should allow you to know what's wrong just by tasting. Personally, I have never tasted dick so I can't help you beyond that.

2 points

by junk_scienceabout 10 years ago

Second this. Be scientific about it. Taste test the different components and try to isolate the thing that tastes bad.

by Pandeponabout 10 years ago

I spent a good minute trying to figure out if you were serious.

Going over 5% of any kind of cheesecake will make your juice taste like a sweaty ripe body part. Some cheesecakes are best at 3% depending on the brand.

1 points

by catdumplingabout 10 years ago

TFA Cheesecake GCC is heavier on the graham crust than the actual cheesecake part so it can stand a little more without getting sweaty, but I agree that 9.5% is still way too much.

2 points

by polaris59about 10 years ago

Well I just dumped out my entire stash of juice.. Some is OK but most is not as anticipated. Reason I did this.. I was refilling a smaller PG bottle from the big 'ol jug I've had from day one and absently tasted a puddle of spilled PG. Holy cow it was nasty, bitter, quinine, hot and just plain awful. First time I had ever actually tasted straight PG and I'm pretty f'ing sure its not supposed to taste like that. My VG is as expected, slightly sweet and pleasant. So the 100% VG stuff I mixed up last night tastes good, as I would expect. Check your ingredients and use good flavors (ie not MBV)

1 points

by rockofthedabout 10 years agoMixologist

Personally I felt the same way about strawberry cheesecake type vapes. If you're using TFA Strawberry you might be one of the lucky "I can't taste TFA Strawberry" group members.

What flavors do you currently have? Taste is subjective, you're not going to like everything, I dislike most retail juice myself and can agree that most shared DIY recipes are not fantastic but there are few gems out there that's for sure. Again, post your flavorings, I bet we can find you an ADV :)

2 points

by markfromguabout 10 years ago

This right here. It seems I have over time my taste buds have gotten numb to TFA strawberry ripe. on the other note cheesecake has that stinky cheesy smell. try adjusting from a lower percentage, and upping for taste. less is more. some flavors pop at certain percentages.

Let us know what flavors you have and maybe we can help you come up with something decent.

I definitely wouldn't go anywhere near 9.5% with the Cheesecake (GC Crust)

With flavors like that you want to start small and work your way up, like 2%.

Fruit, the ripe strawberry should be the main one in that mix, but I'd probably start it around 7%.

Amazing and easy if you have the flavors:

TFA Juicy Peach: 7%

TFA Strawberry Ripe: 7%

TFA Blueberry: 7%

I have friends who use this as their ADV, it's that good.

1 points

by skiddlzninjaabout 10 years agoFrugivore

Seems your PG may have gone flaccid. Try just mixing the flavors max VG without nic, using your new nicotine. This way you can put in piece-by-piece to see what is giving you the phallic taste.

1 points

by ertttabout 10 years ago

I would test this recipe at at

  • 3% cheesecake graham crust
  • 4% strawberry ripe
  • .5% sweet cream.

Then from there see how it plays out. I find its better to under flavor and have total flavorings below 10% and then build up the flavor you want to be more prominent. Maybe start with just the cheesecake and strawberry. Sweet cream tastes weird for a few days during steeping

1 points

by Jigsaw314about 10 years ago

I always add ingredients in reverse order to this ie. Flavor first, nic last. Is it possible that 100mg/ml nicotine is reacting with some poor quality plastic bottles? Try mixing a 0mg recipe and see if you can still taste dick.

0 points

by joesphaaabout 10 years ago

Over Flavoring, Let it steep. Try not to push higher than 12-15%. I like around 6-12%.

0 points

by thlayli_xabout 10 years ago

If the flavorings don't taste the same after you add them to VG/PG/nic it's probably the VG/PG/nic. Taste them individually. Just don't try the nic without diluting it to around 1mg/mL.

I only use the graham crust when I want a hint of buttery graham cracker in my mixes, otherwise I use a mixture of cheesecake, cream cheese icing and whipped cream in various ratios to get a really heavy creamy cheesecakey flavor.

I would try;

  • 2.5% cheesecake (graham crust)
  • 4% cheesecake
  • 4% whipped cream
  • 4% cream cheese icing
  • 3%% strawberry ripe
  • 2.5% strawberries and cream

The cheesecake, cheesecake (graham crust) and cream cheese icing mix to make a very nice cheesecake flavor, and the strawberries and cream adds a sort of candied strawberry (like the cream-savers strawberries and cream candy) flavor that adds to the strawberry ripe to make a more complete strawberry. If you want more crust flavor I would reccomment 1% graham cracker and 1% pie crust (which adds more of a buttery pie crust note to the existing graham cracker crust, and rounds it out nicely.) The whipped cream just smooths out and ties together all of the other creamy bits.

*edit: This is based on a recipe I vape, but with a few adjustments. Also, fixed a few issues with the %s, realised I wrote them wrong.
