Cloning Placid
submitted about 10 years ago by 360joules

Well, I've finally made the decision to dive headfirst down this rabbit hole. Adirondack Placid has been my ADV for a year now, and over the last month or so, I've read every word in print about it. I've tasted it critically and slowly, in a number of devices and at a wide range of wattages. I think I'm ready.

Based on all the attempted clones so far, here's my starting point:

  • INW Pear 6%
    *TFA Honeysuckle 6%
    *TFA Strawberry (Ripe) 4%
*FA Lime Tahity Cold Press 1.5%
    *INW Limetka 1%
    *Lime Juice 2 drops/5ml

As a shake-n-vape, the pear is almost nonexistent, and the honeysuckle is too much. The lime is there, but not at the level it needs to be. All in all, it's tasty, but it's not Placid. Yet.

We'll give it a couple of days of steeping, and see how it is then.

This is off, if i remember tomorrow I will give you a more accurate recipe. I will even give you an option to an improvement that adrionack missed.

I am curious as to what you have to share

I agree that it's off.
Batch two had some changes, including swapping the inawera pear for FW, and the inawera lime for TFA key lime.
It's closer to Placid, but still not there yet.
I work tomorrow, so I won't get to experiment more until Sunday.

I'm told my version isn't bad. I've never tried the original, but I made this and liked it (and another user tried it and said it's close).

If you don't want to follow the link, I mix the following (all TFA) at 60/40 VG/PG, 3mg/mL:

  • Strawberry Ripe - 5%
  • Honeysuckle - 4%
  • Pear - 4%
  • Key Lime - 2%
  • Sour - 2%
  • Marshmallow - 1%

Edit: This thread made me want some... so now I have 30mL and it's yum. :)

Apparently I need to make another flavor order...

Interesting i haven't tried that. I really think the key lime is better than the cold pressed. Something about the cold pressed bothers my lungs and the original placid doesn't do that. So i'm curious if key lime and inawara would be good together. Sour and marshmallow is interesting though i may try the marshmallow instead of EM next time.

edit: try mine and let me know what you think.

Ah. Marshmallow is a great idea. That would help round out the pointy bits on my last mix.

This is as close as I have come and I still think the lime is wrong. I recently added some cotton candy to smooth it out a bit and it wasn't bad. Might want to try 1% EM/tfa cotton candy in there.

Thanks! I'm going to tweak that a bit, based on ingredients on hand.

Did u get a chance to try my placid? I'm interested in what u think. I may try some marshmallow to sweeten and mellow the cold pressed.

I've never had placid but I found /u/fizzmustard 's homage to placid to be quite tasty. Have you tried it?

Never tried the original myself, but I gave his recipe a try with TFA Key lime at 2% instead of FA lime cold pressed and I loved it.

I swear everything fizz mixes is simply amazing, and so simple, with flavors most people have (I'm looking at you /u/botboy141 :P).

Fizz might be the reason I break the seal and buy juice for the first time in a year. But yeah I cant have enough of his nana cream and mustard milk, so... I might hold off a bit ;).

What can I say, I like complexity to my juice =)

Nothing wrong with that, I'm just looking forward to the day where I have all the ingredients for one of your recipes haha.

But yeah might aswell just cave in and buy it all ;).

I haven't... Is it one I should take a look at?

With fizz's recipe and actual Placid side-by-side, I can't tell the difference. Until I swap Honeysuckle for Cherry Blossom that is. :P

Check the 2nd comment in this thread. :)

That's a pretty good recommendation right there...

I'd try it just to see how it compares to the original. He believes it's close.

Well, I've dripped about half of test batch number one, and I've come to a number of conclusions:

First, this recipe is delicious. That's all well and good, and I've notated it as such, but it's not the result I'm after.
Second, I think I'm using the wrong pear. Inawera's pear is my favorite, and that's why I tried to "make it fit," but it doesn't.
Third, I think the honeysuckle is about right. I don't think I should come down on it very much, rather I should come up a bit on the other flavors.
Fourth, I'm not sure what to do with the lime. On batch number two, I'm going to try eliminating the INW limetka. I don't feel like it's adding anything tangible. Keeping the cold pressed and the couple of drops of lime juice, though.

I love this... "Figuring it out."

It's my favorite pear too but I usually have trouble making it fit into recipes as well! I actually don't have a single recipe with it that's worth sharing but I love the taste and feel of that pear. If you have other recipes with it I'd love to try them. Thanks for this one!

Tfa pear is certainly the pear in it. If you smell some and then smell placid you can see it. Adirondack gave us a hint a while back saying there are 4 different companies in it and I have yet to crack it but I've been using:

Tfa pear

Tfa honeysuckle

Cap sweet strawberry

Fa lime Tahiti cold pressed.

They also mentioned a fifth ingredient so I'm not sure about that. Maybe it is key lime I'm gonna try fw key lime even though I like tfa better since that last ingredient couldn't be tfa in this iteration of the puzzle

I smelled and tasted the FA key lime next to placid, and I don't think it's quite right, either. Honestly, smell-wise, the TFA smelled closer.

While I'm waiting for another batch of flavorings to arrive, I think I'm going to mix up a larger bottle of test batch 1, with nicotine. Depending on how it steeps, I may name it and add it to my stable, on its own benefits.

Hmm I thought fa lime cold pressed was dead on as far as lime went but will try adding some key lime as well

by onmywaydownnowabout 10 years agoMixologist

The fifth might be a sweetener or possibly joy or kaktus :)

Joy is too new but possibly cactus I'll give it a shot
