Rice(ish) flavor reviews and some other stuff
submitted about 10 years ago by Nicobeak

Haven't been very active here lately, but I have been on a quest to make a mango sticky rice. Ended up ordering a few rice type flavorings from lesser known vendors a couple months ago, and figured I'd share my notes, some semi-successful recipes, and one good one.

First off, my palate isn't very refined, so if you've tried these please add your knowledge. The flavors:

  • One on One Flavors Rice Milk - This is a pretty strange flavor. It was not what I expected really, but ended up being pretty good as a creamy/milky type base. Tested at 7% (high butyric acid taste freshly mixed), and 3% standalone. The butyric acid taste is still noticeable at 3% fresh, but fades in a few days. Works well around 3% or so to add a different creaminess with a little bit of earthy rice taste. Earthy rice taste is very light. Seemed to add nicely to mango around 2-3%. Also tried at 6% with cin ceylon and vanilla, trying to replicate horchata with limited success. Wasn't bad, actually, I think it'd be good with a different/another cinnamon. Summary, not good standalone (surprise...) but seems to show a lot of promise for mixing in place of sweet/fresh/vienna/bav around 2-3% for a little something different.

  • One on One Flavors Rice Pudding- This stuff is strong. 7% - Weird off flavor, too much like rice cooked in broth of some kind. kind of fruity but musky, strong BA taste. 3% - Still strong too much earthy rice taste. BA taste still present. 0.25% - used in mango mixes to try and give a little more rice taste to my mixes, and it just never worked. Even at 1 drop / 30 ml it imparted a very strange earthy taste that I do not want. Honestly, I got fed up with this one and haven't touched it since. I may try making a dilution at some point... Summary, not a good flavoring imo. Vague similarity to rice pudding; good idea, but not translated very well. No uses.

  • One on One Flavors Cinnamon Roll - I ordered 2 15 ml flavorings direct from them and they sent me 30 ml of this for free. Awesome guys for sure. This flavor is excellent in my opinion. Smells like the mall next to cinnabon. Most realistic of any cin roll I've tried yet, nice cinnamon flavor, bakery flavor present, icing flavor present, mild throat hit - seems very well done. Mixed at 12% standalone. Used in mixes 2-4% to add a nice cinnamon. Summary, one of the best cinnamon pastry flavors out there. Different than cap or tfa patries, better cinnamon than tfa, better pastry than cap. Icing flavor included.

  • DKS Sweet Rice - This is the one I was excited about. 2% standalone, tastes like jet-puffed marshmallows freshly mixed. After a couple days, a slight sweet rice flavor comes through. Must use good/no nic, otherwise you will definitely taste the nic. Very sweet, prob sucralose, seems to gunk coils quickly. Mixed with mangos and strawberry, taste barely makes it through. Upped percentage with limited success (mostly just more sweetness). Summary, very good flavoring, just wish it were a little stronger on the rice taste and a little less sweet. Will continue to mess around with this one for sure. (oh yeah, had to order from UK - Cloud 9, no available in US)

Most recent shot at Mango Sticky Rice for those interested:

Mango Sticky Rice WIP V9

  • Mango (INW) 0.50%
  • Sweet Rice (DKS) 3.00%
  • Sweet Mango (Cap) 5.00%
  • Rice Milk (OoO) 1.00%
  • Cactus (INW) 0.50%
  • Coconut Extra (TFA) 0.50%
  • Shisha Vanilla (INW) 0.35%
  • 1 drop AP 30 ml

Here's what I know from experience. FA/INW coconut do not work. Seems to dry it out (for lack of a better word) too much. TFA coc ex is much better (surprise). The mangos fade too quickly after a day unless cactus is added. Could probably drop cactus to .3%. Shisha vanilla bc I just recently discovered it and love it, works much better than van swirl (was too creamy). AP helps the rice a little. This is still not where I want it. It's really good, but can def be improved to be more accurate.

Also, a simple mix of cap sweet mango 6% and DKS sweet rice 4% is really good, but not really what I'm going for.

Ok, one more unrelated recipe that is really good and simple (if you have the flavors):

No name

  • INW WG Raspberry - 2%
  • MF Strawberry - 1%
  • FA Vienna Cream - 2%
  • INW Cactus - .5%
  • EM 10% - 1%

Damn, this is good. Shake and vape. Swore off strawberry for a while, but went back on a whim and glad I did. Could prob use malina instead about 1.5%, but I had some WG that I hadn't tried yet.

One more thing. This sub rocks; there are people on here that are very kind and knowledgeable. It is a great place to "meet" people with common interests and trade ideas/flavorings. One of you guys even sent me around 75 leftover INW flavors so I could try out some of their stuff, among other things! In the spirit of keeping it going, I've got some spare TFA laying around; sweet cream, dragon fruit, strawberry, graham cracker clear, cheesecake graham crust, and bavarian cream, 30-90 ml of each, if you'd like to try any let me know and we can try and work something out. Ok, that's it. Long post.

Edit: forgot EM

Amazing write-up. I've been looking for good rice flavors as well and some of these sound great. I gotta try to clone Chicora by Cape Fear.

Thanks for your notes!

Insightful writeup, interesting to see the usage of the smaller vendors.

How does it steep? Are you still satisfied after a week?

I saw you mention the Mangobase in another post and really like it, a wellrounded ripe mango. I mixed it with green Tea for a wholesome Vape.

The mango definitely fades a bit even with the addition of the cactus. Not as much though. I'd be interested in trying TFA mango in there to see if it holds up better whenever I can get some in. As a whole though, it stands up to time pretty well. I tried a little malic in one, but I'll have to go back and check to see how that one is doing.

Green tea with the mango base sounds delicious! I've been meaning to order some sort of tea for a while. Which brand of green tea are you using?

FA Green Tea is my go to, work in progress, but here you go;

  • 3% Sweet Mango Cap

  • .3% Mango IW

  • .3% Cactus IW

  • .3% Guava FA

  • .5% Lime IW

  • .7% Green Tea FA

  • .2% Dragon Fruit TFA

So far i definitely need to tone down the Lime, maybe scratch it altogether. The Guava will get .1-.2 more to add another spoonfull sour and exotic.

The Green Tea adds a nice earthy middle note which lingers together with Guava. The Lime was a try to make it fresher, but it is too vibrant, and has no place (or a smaller place)in this.

Awesome, thanks for sharing that. I'm missing the tea and guava, but I'll give it shot when I get some in. And I like your idea of lowering the mango base. I'll give that a go next time around and see if it comes through a little more.

Have you tried with TFA Coconut Candy? Every time I smell it I think of sticky rice.

I have not! I'll have to add that one to my next order as well, whenever that is. Thanks for the suggestion!

Awesome writeup! I've been looking for a rice flavor for a while to make a Kheer (Indian rice pudding). The closest I have gotten is using Rice Krispies (FW) but it's a little too, well, krispy for my taste. I'll have to try these and see what they do in that recipe.

Btw I hadn't thought to try cactus before, adding that to my list too.

Thanks!

I had some kheer the other day and was thinking the same thing. The OoO rice pudding may work here with the other supporting flavors knocking down the earthiness a bit. It just never sat right with the mangos. What supporting flavors are you thinking for kheer? I don't have any raisin, but I do have coconuts, almond/toasted almond. Hmm a DKS, coconut, toasted almond combo with some kind of fruit I have laying around might be good too. I think the only thing I have close to raisin is black currant (honestly I have no idea if it's close or not).

I think think the secret is cardamom and pistachio actually - if you are interested my current recipe is Kheer v4. I think it's already pretty good, but looking forward to trying it with some of your suggestions for rice, as that's the only thing that seems fairly off to me still.

Edit: the black currant might work, though you might think about ordering some raisin anyway - though it doesn't seem to get the best reviews I like it quite a bit. And anyway if you like Indian food / kheer then you need to make an order for cardamom anyway, it's awesome 😊

Thanks for sharing that. I'll look into ordering pistachio/cardamom/raisin. Let me check when I get home, but I may have a couple ml of rice pudding I can send your way if you are interested in trying it out.
