Birthday Cake! Recipe and Notes
submitted about 10 years ago by DuskMS

First things first:

Birthday Cake

  • 5% FW Yellow Cake*
  • 7% CAP Vanilla Custard V1*
  • 2% FA Fresh Cream

Mixed @ Max VG

Steeping

Don't even taste this after mixing unless it's for future reference or note taking purposes. It's certainly not a shake and vape.

Best left alone after 7-10 days (see notes for explanation).

Good @ 4 days after mixing then immediately hot bathing + aggressive shaking, follow with a shake up; couple times a day.

Profile

full, baked, vanilla cake

Full as in a a full flavor, leaves little to the imagination and tastes like it should after steeping.

Baked as in this isn't hot, refreshing, nor raw. Like the way you would describe a muffin. This is like the final baked cookie opposed the dough.

Notes

Before I even start let me address the **"*"**s because they might brush you the wrong way as too high of flavoring, particularly the Yellow Cake so I want to explain my reasoning there. The Yellow Cake is the base of this recipe and didn't seem to fall apart or magically morph into feces but could probably be dialed down a notch, steeping should be considered an essential ingredient in some recipes this being one of them as it turns the flavors from tasting a bit off to amazing.

The VC % I originally got forever ago from the famous 7.5% VC 2% DdL custard recipe floating around and have since mixed/tasted/tested with it countless times anywhere from 3-7.5% and find standalone 7% makes an excellent custard base that when steeped with this much yellow cake obscures the classic custard notes that one would think this vape would have.

While I'm at it the fresh cream is quite literally the icing on the cake here. It adds sweetness to the full bodied cake going on here. Nothing fancy...yet.

Don't know if the profile really helps in describing this but I would compare it to this Baskin Robbins flavor because that's exactly what it tastes like. At first it has that playdoh taste that Cap VC gives in high percentages off the bat but it melds well after about three days with no speed steeping introduced. After four or five days depending on how "MAX VG" you make it tastes like initially intended and seems to plateau off which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Final Thoughts

After steeping and tasting a few times a day from day 1-14 and I think this would make a great base if toned down in percentages by a third or so as is this recipe is a great stand alone however. I plan on adding some fruits, reducing percentages for a more balanced flavor, and playing with additives next chance I have to mix but I'm on vacation and that might be a while so without further ado I hand this simple recipe off to you /r/DIY_eJuice

On an unrelated note; from time to time (at least twice a week) I come to splurge on this subreddit, reading every thread I can regardless of topic or ratings just to learn more and familiarize myself with the progress and developments made on the DIY juice scene and to ballpark where I want to head with my flavors and profiles as I can definitely be put in the category of vapers who simply doesn't have a single staple ADV so this hobby allows me to experiment with a wide variety of profiles and find my flavors of the week or occasionally something that will last a month or so without spending countless dollars on what will most likely be wasted ml's. It's about to hit 9 months of DIY for me and I'd like to start actively contributing to as soon as I get back from vacation. I couldn't wait to see the reaction for this and was hoping some could play around with adding fruits and balancing it out to their own liking in the mean while :D

I could go ahead an whip this up. But how would you feel about me adding 1% TFA vanilla cupcake to the mix? I'd probably dial down the VC1 to 5% to compensate(and it has a "spice" to it that wouldn't taste good in a cake). And since you mentioned more dialing down of the ingredients, I may go for 3.5-4% FW yellow cake, since the vanilla cupcake will add some cakiness to the recipe, and with the dialed down VC1, I won't need as much YC to cut the "spice". I'll leave the FA Fresh Cream as is.

And perhaps I'll make a batch and add .5% HS pineapple and 1% EM to the changes stated, while dropping Fresh Cream entirely, to make an upside down pineapple cake? I haven't taste the recipe, so your input would be helpful on whether or not this would work with the base you've created.

To address your first bit I'd say look at dialing it down as a whole rather than individually to re-balance the flavor 3.5% YC + 5% VC + 1% VCC could work nicely I haven't had much expierence with Vanilla Cupcake if it adds a good bit of sweetness I'd cut the Fresh Cream down to 1.5/1 depending on how sweet VCC is, but at that point I would want to start fine tuning percents if adding more things to contribute to the cake flavor and would probably mix at least a few small iterations with varying ratios akin to the one I just used in this comment.

Secondly I know Pineapples tend to be strong even though I haven't come across HS Pineapple I'd say keep the Fresh Cream (as it's essential at the moment for clarity of the cake flavor and keeps the high% of YC and VC from tasting muddled) and add 1-2% FA Meringue depending the amount of pineapple. If 0.5% HS Pineapple would make Pineapple a main flavor in the mix then 2% if its low enough to be a background note or flavor on the tip of the tongue that makes you go "Ah! This has a hint of pineapple in it, delicious!!" then 1%. Look at it Inhale VS Exhale, now with diversifying flavor profile into say fruits we can create a layering effect but which is going to be the core, cake or fruit?

Edit: On a side note I'd like to add that I only ever add EM/Sweetener in simple or early mixes as I much rather prefer a flavor that derives it's sweetness in fractions from varying flavors this way it retains a fully developed lasting profile after steeping. It can make Strawberries and Cream go from a Strawberry dipped in melted sugar that may or may not taste like toilet in X amount of time after mixing; to Strawberries sitting afloat a cloud of cream compositions that is sweet in and of itself and provides mouth feel and subtle flavor notes that are lasting opposed to just simply sweetening up a hit of your favorite fruit flavor.

I chose pineapple with EM because almost all pineapple flavors have the harsh bits, and the muting that EM does to the flavor would certainly mellow these out. Perhaps .5% pineapple and 1% EM to mute the pineapple a bit. Or maybe do 1% TFA strawberry, seeing as it has a good amount of EM in it already, and would help sweeten the pineapple at this %. Or perhaps .5% TFA apricot to sweeten the pineapple, as well as adding a "soft" fruit flavor to the mix; much like how pineapple is when cooked.

I'd imagine for inhale v exhale, this juice to have a nice, fresh cake on the inhale, with a creamy, candied pineapple on the exhale; much like how pineapple upside-down cake is mainly cake, with pineapple on top.

Are you planning on doing an Ice Cream and Cake iteration at some time? I'd be curious to see how 2% TFA VB Ice Cream and .5% FA meringue would alter the mix, and if it would even stand out at all.

EDIT: I also rarely use EM, and when I do, I use it for its muting properties. If I have a flavor that is too strong, I find that small amounts of EM can tone it down a bit, if just lowering the offending flavor's % changes the flavor too much. It's great when working with notoriously strong flavors like lemon, pineapple, or pear.

I'll have to try that and to be honest before posting this I had been stuck for a few days wondering if there was a difference between this and the actual ice cream flavor I had listed but after some time that question answered itself for me as the Fresh Cream mellowed out and let it become a single cake flavor. And it seems I didn't explain the Meringue in my earlier comment but that combined with the Fresh Cream will more than certainly smooth the Pineapple out, I suggested Meringue specifically for that purpose. It sounds like you wanna go low-medium on the Pineapple then add 1% Meringue with the original recipe. If you are using an altered one with less flavoring % but more flavors (example: dialing back then adding Vanilla Cupcake) I'd suggest adding even less Pineapple and Meringue to compensate for the weaker base despite it perhaps (most likely) tasting better.

EDIT: That's interesting, what percentage of EM would you say begins the muting on prominent flavors without "adding sugar" to the overall flavor? In that scenario I would just lower the percentages but I can see where that would be helpful if it's not the percentages but just an issue with the particular fruit flavors melding.

Came here to say I thought Vanilla Cupcake might push this over the edge, bull city needs to hurry up so I can have all these ingredients to play with.

Oh wow, you're still alive! This sounds yummy, thanks for sharing.

You ever get any further on that Shurb recipe you were messing with?

Ha hi there, sorry didn't realize that post would grab as much lasting traction as it did. I've been super preoccupied with life related things but plan on making a decently large DIY order soon to mess with this new yogurt scene and with that a large amount of staple fruit flavors I've been missing. I didn't feel comfortable continuing that clone with INW as I maybe could have come up with something akin to Shurb but I doubt it would ever be Shurb. Also I found that the actual Shurb tastes horrid after a month or so. Maybe I just purchased a bottle at the end of the batch but I will have to pick up another one soon. I can go back to that and ballpark what I would do with it but I don't really remember the flavor profile all that well of Shurb and don't physically have the flavorings yet for it. I'll go update that post now with well and update on my mixing and where I want to head with it so as not to leave anyone hanging any longer.

Happy Cakeday :)

Oh, word. Well I did write this at like 4am after crushing some and chain vaping like a train so your comment struck me off guard. I was even more surprised by the quick posts on it but given my mood at the time I got so giddy in my responses and wanted to make the most of the conversations :D

After a week steep, the PUDcake is good, but it seems that the spiciness of the custard is coming out a bit too much. I may replace some of it with FLV custard to help smooth the base a bit.

I've never experienced spiciness using any amount of CAP VC V1, you mean like peppery? I usually will add 1% FA Vanilla Classic to help with the smooth custard flavor.

Yeah, that underlying spice that makes VC1 different from other custards. I have a fairly sensitive tongue to flavors, so it comes off as slightly spicy to me. Still good, but I'll need to cut it down to make it a cake flavor.

After waiting seven days, not so patiently, for this to steep:

HOLY CRAP THIS IS RICH!

I've never tasted the BR ice cream, but yes, I'm sure this is what it tastes like.

I plan on making this again — several different batches — with different fruit blends, and dropping everything but the FC. This is one of the first juices I've tasted, in which the fresh cream actually creates the icing effect.

Will I make it again, as is? I can't decide. It's almost too good. Like when you eat too much, too fast, because your food is so delicious. I keep thinking my stomach is going to start hurting from the richness of the juice.

Thanks for the recipe.

No problem, I'm glad to hear :D and he's exactly its literally TOO rich so let me know which batch if any can give that same cakey goodness without overwhelming the fruits or the like because I feel like dropping %'s will mute more things rather then make them weaker in this case.

Will do. I'm actually thinking something more candy like. TFA Strawberry or CAP Sweet Strawberry, to start.

Use both and throw in 1-2% of Bav Cream. Thank me later ;)

Is there anything I can use in place of the fresh cream? I have TFA Bavarian cream and Sweet Cream plus a few other things. Any help would be appreciated.

Maybe some sweet cream and marshmallow combination under 2% of each

Awesome, I'll give it a shot and report back.

Edit:Dropped VC down to 6% added 1% sweet cream and 2% TFA Vanilla Bean icecream.

First tasting is almost exactly the flavor of Baskin Robin's Cake Icecream. I think a hint of koolada if done right could make for a fantastic icecream vape.
