A Very Cereal Discussion [Recipes & Suggestions Included]
submitted about 10 years ago by returnityArmchair Flavorist

Before I get into this, I just want to apologize for being less active here than I prefer to be in the past few months. I've been so busy, working overtime at Cloudmaker Tech to pull off something amazing, and working on my mixes and /r/Deeper_DIY research in spare time has been tough. I'm also putting together the seriously-ambitious DIYrepubliq project with the help some skilled mixing partners/associates, mostly from this sub, but more on that later this week.

What I'm posting here is a pretty tasty approach I stumbled upon for a lemon pledge-free cereal vape, while trying to make use some of TFA's new cereal flavors (I'll post up my flavor reviews in the appropriate place and link to it from here in a bit):

You can also strip it down to basics for a solid Crunchberries baseline flavor you can build on (yes, <10 flavors is 'basic' to me, though I might try pulling the FW Hazelnut+Yellow Cake combo for the v2 after this mix steeps):

The Crunchbaron v1:

  • Berry Crunch (TFA) - 4%

  • Captain Cereal (TFA) - 1.5% (sub FA Cookie 0.75% or bump BC to 5%)

  • Yellow Cake (FW) - 1%

  • Vienna Cream (FA) - 1%

  • Orange Cream (TFA) - 0.5%

  • Strawberry Ripe (TFA) - 0.75%

  • Hazelnut (FW) - 1.5%

  • Meringue (FA) - 2%

  • Marshmallow (FA) 1%

Please note that these are early tester recipes, not near-final draft recipes like I generally post, so please offer constructive criticisms & post your versions!

Based on my liters of experiments, when you break it down, cereal vapes consist of three basic flavor components: the fruity flavor (top notes), the cereal grain/crunch flavor (heart notes), and the milk/creamy/sweet flavor (base notes). For tweaking this formula to your own purposes, I'd suggest playing with combinations of flavors from these 3 categories, for example:

  • Fruity note subs: FE Lemon/TFA Fruit Circles//CAP Lemon Meringue Pie/FA Raspberry/Cherry (0.25%)/TFA Strawberry Ripe/CAP Harvest Berry

  • Grainy cereal note subs: FA Cookie/TFA Rice Crunchies/FW Hazelnut+FW Yellow Cake (together)/TFA Captain Cereal/INW Biscuit/TFA Oatmeal Cookie/CAP Sugar Cookie

  • Creamy/sweet note subs: TFA Lucky Leprechaun/TFA Toasted Marshmallow/FA Cream Fresh/TFA Bavarian Cream/Sucralose (<0.5%)/Brown Sugar/TFA Cheesecake Graham Crust

For example, I just threw this recipe together while writing this post. It might be awful, who knows? But it could also be a gem... Only one way to find out.

Crunching Tiger v0

  • Berry Crunch (TFA) - 4%

  • Lucky Leprechaun (TFA) - 2%

  • Biscuit (INW) - 0.5%

  • Yellow Cake (FW) - 1%

  • Vienna Cream (FA) - 1%

  • Orange Cream (TFA) - 0.5%

  • Hazelnut (FW) - 1.5%

  • Meringue (FA) - 1.5%

  • Lemon Meringue Pie (CAP) 1.25%

  • Strawberry Ripe (TFA) - 0.75%

  • Marshmallow (FA) 0.5%

Side note: I'm working on another post for later this week about my DIYrepubliq project with Wayne (/u/Enyawreklaw). We'll be looking for experienced DIYer's opinions, requests, and information/collaboration from this sub to help us in our quest to both broaden the horizons of DIY and provide better resources to the core DIY community. While we both truly enjoy posting recipes/videos/answering questions (I posted these recipes because I've missed you guys not cause I think they're groundbreaking or brilliant) and I love helping run this sub, I want to take DIY to the next level. Not just DeeperDIY, but rather making DIY mixes accessible in a way never before attempted. I don't wanna go into specifics yet, but this project is about providing quality mixes, like the many gems I see posted here, to the larger vaping world (with their creators' full involvement and knowledge/credit, of course), organizing/collecting/tagging these recipes for posterity on a level never done before, and creating an incentive structure that truly can motivate talented mixers and flavor creators to share their best mixes and recipes by providing tangible rewards. When we're through, the entire vaping community will know that DIY juice is the craft beer of the vaping world, and everyone will want DIY instead of the Bud Light Lime shitwater that SB/Cuttwood/Five Pawns/etc. are pumping out at over-inflated prices. I hope you guys will support DIYrepubliq as we work to improve and empower this wonderful community in order to prepare DIY mixing for the massive changes that are coming when the FDA deeming regs finally kick in. I think you'll all really like what's in store. =P

While our team is working on that project, in the meantime, I'm probably going to throw together a /r/DIY_ejuice wiki page or maybe a megathread like I did at VU for all the cereal recipes I've put together and found/tweaked. I'm also in the process of posting them to my ELR account, which I've never really used much, but I want to make sure that user experience is in the front of my mind when I'm working on this project (which is why I'm making that other post I mentioned before, to get your opinions).... but for this thread, let's try to be cereal.

Do you think that Joy has any place in cereal mixes?

by DrMclovensabout 10 years agoThe Mad Alchemist

actually have been planning on trying it out on my fruity pebbles recipe. I got all the fruity flavors down and just looking for the perfect grainy, wheaty, bready base.

FW Rice Krispies, FW Yellow cake+Hazelnut, and FA nor FW cookie have not seemed to do it perfectly for me. don't get me wrong, they work well...but it's just not quite the perfection I'm looking for.

I plan on play around with Joy and or AP for a while and see what I come up with

TFA Captain Cereal has been very promising in the short time I've been using it.

i'LL HAVE TO ORDER SOME.

damn. all. these. flavors.

I have over 200 flavors and still constantly find myself needing another flavor XD.

It's a love hate relationship

Has very light notes of cereal and even chocolate if you taste carefully, could see it bringing a lot of authenticity to a Reese/coco puff cereal. I'd work it in at like 0.5-.75%. That would be the best use of it in my opinion, as it is in no way distracting and entirely enhancing the right profile. I used it 0.5% in the Reese's puffs i'm working on and have to say it shows a bit of promise.

Only in a golden grahams/cinnamon toast crunch type vape, and then it's a maybe. Joy has yet to really impress me though, but I've got some new test mixes steeping. If you know of a knockout Joy recipe, please let me know. I'm just not sure it's got anything crucial to add, but it's worth trying.

2 points

by TSpectacularabout 10 years ago

I just got mine, so I'm far from having a knockout. I'm still testing it in 2/3 flavor iterations to see what's what. I have high hopes for it being a great addition to churro recipes, and I'm scheming on a coconut macaroon sort of thing. Also, though I feel like it's pretty ambitious and I have no idea how long it'll take me to get it even close to right, I'm going to try to use it in making a fried ice cream juice.

1 points

by ___on___on___about 10 years ago

My main thoughts for my Joy are Churro/Deep fried ice cream kinda flavors.

I posted this in another thread, still been tweaking it, but I've gotten some killer feedback so far from friends/redditors. At first I really couldn't find a place for joy until I decided to mix it with FA marzipan and the FA meringue, and it reminded me of a bearclaw, and from there I just started adding other flavors and it makes really good packaged, little debbie snacks (FLV cinnamon toast crunch/ fa fuji for apple fritter) I have a few others too that work okay with it, just messing with percentages still.

> FA joy 2% > > FA marzipan 2% > > > FA meringue 1-2 drops per 10 ml otherwise it overpowers. > > FLV Boysenberry 2-4% > > FLV cream 1% > > Acetyl Pyrazine .33% just to give that extra bit of breadiness > > I say 2-4% on the boysenberry because it depends whether or not you want a more delicate fruit pastry flavor, or something more reminiscent of a lil' debbie fruit pie.

Nice work man! I will have to try out one of these and let you know how it is!

BTW for anyone who cares: I had never made the cereal killa clones until recently and after doing so had a thought...First, version one was ok but the revised version is way better and more like fruit loops. So my thought/question was: Has anyone ever tried using earl grey tea with or without a combo of chai tea in making a cereal? Earl grey tea uses bergamot and if you research this stuff you will find people talking a lot about how earl grey tea smells or reminds them of fruit loops. Another person said earl grey and chai tea combined also produced this effect. Anyway, I don't have either one of these flavorings because I don't like tea vapes but if anyone has them could you see if there would be any similarities with cereal killa? Odd I know but I have always thought the real stuff has something odd in it.

Edit: Sorry, probably shouldn't have put this in your thread, it was just on my mind.

2 points

by Dc1996about 10 years agoMixologist

My first time trying earl grey was crazy. All I could smell was fruit loops. I had to look it up to see if I was crazy or not lol

2 points

by gordonavapesabout 10 years ago

TFA Earl Grey in small amounts really rounds out fruit loops recipes. I recommend starting with 0.2% and adjusting to taste.

1 points

by returnityabout 10 years agoArmchair Flavorist

interesting tip! thanks for sharing.

1 points

by gordonavapesabout 10 years ago

No problem.

I was working on an earl grey vape long before I touched cereals, and several people commented that it tasted like a strange fruit loops. When I picked up a box of fruit loops for research into cereal flavors I found bergamot to be the dominant note from a scent perspective. Wasn't surprised that it was in the cereal killa clone as the couple of times I've tried cereal killa it's been the most accurate "fruit loops clone" I've found.

Too much in a recipe and it'll overpower everything, but to my taste it's a critical missing note in a lot of fruit loop recipes. I was really surprised that the lemon note was the dominant note in TFA Fruit Circles, as I can't detect any bergamot in it at all. Feels like whoever formulated the recipe couldn't have had a box of the cereal on hand for comparison.

Actually, I wanted this kind of discussion. I'm not gonna ban you from our sub over a useful post, and based on the upvotes and the post from /u/gordonavapes with a specific suggestion, I think you added something cool that I'd never considered. Never hesitate to contribute.

I'd just like to leave this here, been working on it for a while now and it's finally getting good. It tastes like a mix of Fruity Pebbles with cream and Lucky Charms Marshmallows, and it's been getting better with each iteration. I'm using a blend of custard notes at the moment seeing as I'm out of TPA Bavarian Cream but if you have some, feel free to go either way. I'd really love some notes on this one, it's the first shake n' vape-able juice I've been able to create with Fruit Circles so I'm fairly excited about it. > Lucky Charms Marshmallows N' Milk v2 (I'm still bad at names)

  • Fruit Circles (TPA) @ 4.25%

  • Crunch Cereal (FLV) @ 0.75%

  • Cheesecake W. Graham (TPA) @ 1%

  • Vanilla Bean Ice Cream (TPA) @ 1%

  • Vanilla Custard v1 (CAP) @ 1%

  • Cream (FLV) @ 3%

  • Sweet Cream (TPA) @ 2%

  • Toasted Marshmallow (TPA) @ 2%

Edit: Also been experimenting with a half % of each TPA Smooth and Ethyl Malto in there but I can't decide if it helps or hurts.

1 points

by returnityabout 10 years agoArmchair Flavorist

TFA Smooth is a risky move in cereals in my experience, I wouldn't use it. The recipe looks tasty for sure & I'll mix it uo soon and post back! Fruit Circles can be a harsh mistress, but you tame it just like I do -- use less than 5% and bury it in creams and grain! Nice mix.

1 points

by Planisphere9about 10 years ago

Thanks friend! Care to explain what's risky about the Smooth? I didn't like the result this time, what exactly is it? Haven't read too much on it, I figured it would just make the edges less harsh so to speak but it seems to have done just about nothing.

1 points

by TheDayOfTheDoctorabout 10 years ago

Ahh...Everything but the FLV cream. Anything that could be subbed in there?

1 points

by Planisphere9about 10 years ago

Y'know, I'm not certain. I've been experimenting with Cap Vanilla Custard V1 and TFA Vanilla Bean Ice Cream in place of the Bavarian Cream, maybe try a substitution of that nature? Or if you have like TFA Dairy (been wanting to try that) it might work. In my latest batch I added in some TFA Malted Milk Conc to try to get the creaminess more upfront but it didn't work out like I thought. Honestly, I'd try just replacing it with TFA Bavarian if you've got it, we used that when first developing this recipe and it was divine but we've since run out of it.

by JohnLaCuentaabout 10 years ago

I never tried my hand at making a cereal vape (will do as soon as my next order arrives), so I don't know what the lemon is supposed to do to a cereal recipe. But would INW Lemon work? I love the stuff, and I never see it used in cereal recipes. I think /u/Botboy141 might be able to answer this since I've seen him praise this flavor as well in the past.

2 points

Cereal-isly Greeaaaaat work. Love the openness of all the projects you're working on. It's unfortunate what is happening with all the regulations being placed on vaping, DIY and a strong community is what we need.

And I knew I bought Orange Cream for a cereal vape of some sort, just couldn't find the recipe that made me add it to my cart. Now I have one to use it on, Thanks.

1 points

by returnityabout 10 years agoArmchair Flavorist

I've got a plan for that, don't give up hope yet! And yeah, orange cream has always been a tough thing to use -- I actually figured this one out when I subbed it into jackster's CK clone recipe a while ago, but i still have the same 15mL bottle now and I've barely touched it. Meanwhile I go through liters of TFA Strawberry and other flavors lol.

I'm very new to DIY, but one of the main reasons I started is to try to replicate a plain Captain Crunch type flavor without the berries or creamy/milkyness.

Do you have any suggestions about which flavors and percentages you would start at for trying making a plain dry captain crunch w/o the berries?

2 points

by returnityabout 10 years agoArmchair Flavorist

Hmm, I haven't tried that exact recipe but I could probably figure out a baseline. The best existing mix I know of off the top of my head is probably my DIYrep partner /u/Enyawreklaw's Clapton Crunch. He uses Berry Crunch but I'd exchange it (at least 2/3 of it) for TFA Captain Cereal, then accent that with ~1.5% FA Cookie and some of the other grain notes I listed in my OP. There are also some golden grahams and honey nut cheerio-type recipes posted here, on VU, and on e-liquid-recipes.com that could give you a good idea of how to get started and what notes to add. Good luck, and post up when you start -- we'll help you out!

I just got the new CAP Creamy & Greek Yogurt flavors. I've been working on a diketone-free yogurt for a while now, but I'm going to take a break from that and play with the CAP ones this week sometime. FYI, FLV Strawberry is the exact strawberry flavor used in Yoplait for example, or that sugary Gogurt stuff.

I really like this recipe man, thank you so much for your hard work. Where can I find more of your work, the only other thing I could find was your flavorah reviews?

1 points

by returnityabout 10 years agoArmchair Flavorist

I'm working on a whole database of my recipes, but it's part of my upcoming project (tentatively named DIYrepubliq) because there's really no platform where I can release them the way I want to right now. For that reason, I don't have them all collected anywhere in particular online in public, except my actual mixing spreadsheets.

There are recipes by me sprinkled far and wide through this sub, and I've tried to post one in the recipes thread every month and failed terribly... I've been uploading some of them to ELR lately, as people do ask me about them, so I'll try to do a better job of that. There is my long-running, giant Cereal Mixing Megathread at VU (not that I can take credit for all those recipes), but usually I discuss mixing philosophies and specific methods and flavors and recipe types, rather than posting recipe threads. It's partly selfish, because I feel like I learn more that way, but mostly it's because I focus on sharing information and concepts over specific recipes, as I think the community is submerged in recipes already (which is part of the problem I'm making DIYrepubliq to solve). I'm also constantly making changes and so it's impossible to keep up with all my own recipes if I post them in a lot of places, so I generally share them on an individual basis. I'm sorry if that's not a very helpful reply, but I'm happy to share my recipes if you're looking for something specific or working on a flavor profile and need some guidance/examples!
