I hopped on the train and got myself some joy. I haven't had extended time with the flavor, but wanted to share some initial notes and opinions and would like to hear what you think of joy. Not many threads so far on everyone's notes, thought it would be good for people using the search bar for joy notes.
Originally when I received my package (thanks bcv), I was vaping on the Mr. Good Vapes "moon sugar" clone. After smelling Joy I decided to throw 2 drops into 15ml. It does have an almost off smell, but not in a bad way. Wouldnt want it as a standalone. FA in general is shake and vape, but joy blends better after a few days. So to this recipe, I picked up on a powdery sugar inhale, with an extremely light funnel cake or fried dough exhale. It almost adds a waxy like texture, something that will be useful in a lot of mixes. It brought out the sugar cookie in this clone recipe and really enhanced the recipe.
I've included joy with a cap cake batter mix, even after reading that it doesn't do well with custards and creams. I found it softens the cake batter and creates a fluffy sugary note over the mix. I don't find that it shines with cake batter, but I had to try it, for science. I'm also finding that a slight amount of Bavarian creme works well with joy.
As many have noted, joy is used to enhance bakery notes. I see it working well with graham cracker, cookie, pastry, and crust notes. I am going to try joy with some tfa AP to see how the bready notes of ap work with joy. I'd like to try and enhance the faint dough taste.
So far I'm having fun with joy and think it's a cool flavor. Definetly going to be a nice tool to have. Still very early with experimenting with it, but thought I'd share and like to hear what other people are finding with it.
Thought I might add I'm totally loving joy with CAP sugar cookie v2. Will post a recipe once I work on it more
Any progress with that recipe? I still have yet to mix anything wth joy after a month of having it in my stash.
I've been messing it, and I'll be honest, I was let down by joy/the hype of it. It's a good additive, don't get me wrong. It makes the exhale on mixes "fluffier" and kinda sweeter. Like I said in this thread, I added 1 percent to the moon sugar clone and I like it a lot added to it. I vaped about 240ml of it. Other than that, I haven't found it making its way into any of my mixes. I wish it was more fried dough than fluffy powdered sugar with a hint of fried dough.
I was a little disappointed by my first experience with FA Joy -- I'd built myself up hoping it was something like FA's answer to Cinnamon Danish Swirl, without all the cinnamon. I wanted a kick-ass pastry/fried dough flavor, and so I was crushingly let down when I decided to make an Apple Fritter mix with it... As you can imagine, it was a total failure.
After I backed up and started from basics, flavor-testing and stand-alone vaping it, I can see it's more like a fried-dough-sweetener type flavor. For me, it adds some additional complexity with bakery flavors. It's nothing essential to your mixing reporitoire, but I'm going through some of my old favorite recipes adding a few drops of Joy and seeing the tweak it makes.
Edit: Also, it tastes like crap in coffee (the drink).
Would you kindly share the failed apple fritter recipe?
The failed one? It was like 3% Joy with some CAP Cinnamon Danish 3%, FA Apple Pie 1.5%, & FA Fuji 4% basically IIRC (I'd deleted already when I wrote this a month ago). I totally jumped into mixing with Joy without reading anything about it so I could experience it unbiased, but since I was expecting/hoping for a funnel cake flavor, you can imagine how poorly that mix went (if you can't feel free to mix the version I just gave you and vape it)... Anyways, I just posted the final version of my Cinapple Fritter recipe the other day in here & on ELR, if you're looking for a recipe that does taste like an apple fritter.
I can understand the tought process. I vaped straight Joy at 2.5%, therefore i use it at 1% or less.
In my opinion a failed recipe can be interesting aswell. But with Joy at 3% i doubt it improved with steeping.
Thank you for the failed recipe, unfortunately i do not have all the ingredients for it. If i use it i cut joy under 1%.
I'm working with it right now and I'm actually interpreting the taste differently. I don't pick up the sweetness at all at 2%, but it's super heavy on the fried dough taste and feel. It's definitely oily/greasy to me, they totally nailed the "fried" aspect. The smell when I first cracked it open was a bit off putting, it was like the scent of dying flowers and I couldn't get the scent out of my nose for a few hours. I think this is a flavor that takes some consideration before using as I can see how it can ruin a juice.
I try not to smell my flavors directly anymore, for that exact reason! Oops, got a little up there, and smelling it for hours....
I've come to about the same conclusions. I remember someone posting about how it tasted like stale beer. While I myself didn't get beer right a way I could see how someone might think that, especially in higher concentrations as it does have a "bready" kind of taste but definitely different than AP. I think it's great with doughy stuff! I've been working hard to come up with a good flaky pastry dough/crust and I'm sure this will further my efforts.
Just got some from Bull City yesterday. Haven't mixed it in anything yet, but my initial impression from just smelling a drop on my wrist is old beer. Going to try the Bronuts recipe as soon as I get some chocolate glazed donut.

I have made a similar recipe, credit: Kritikal Mass, but with TFA Caramel substituted for CAP. My tasting notes when comparing my clone back-to-back with Moon Sugar is that the Caramel is a bit strong/forward and dry. I am going to try adding Joy when my vape mail arrives on Friday. What percentage of Joy should I add to the mix as a starting point?
Moon Sugar Clone:
1% 10% Ethyl Maltol Solution
3% Caramel (TPA)
8% Graham Cracker (CAP)
4% Sugar Cookie (CAP)
Flavor total: 16%

so i accidentally ordered 30mL of it from BCV, meant to order a 10mL tester size bottle... and have no clue what i could possible use this in. the sugary aspect overwhelms me and cant taste the fried dough part which is what i was hoping would be more prominent. its almost flowery or fruity in a nondescript way. i am going to search here for some recipes and see how you all are using it.
