Ingredients that cause wheeziness?
submitted about 10 years ago by gilesdavis

Hey friendsss,

I had a search and couldn't find any previous posts on this, sorry if this kinda thing isn't allowed here, but I'm after some advice please.

I'm trying to determine the ingredients that cause this for me. Some blends just make me incredibly wheezy.

Now, I know I have a PG sensitivity. Anything over 20% PG is a no go. I thought it was only that but I've also had some high VG/max VG recently that is bad so I'm thinking some flavour ingredients are also causing it.

Chocolate, vanilla, hazlenut are the first kind of flavours that come to mind (Mt Baker, and Zeus Juice brands).

I tried Solar Flare (MBV) once and loved it, just got a bottle and I can barely vape it (even when diluted 50% with menthol, which is my main vape).

Any ideas, I'd love to know so I can query vendors and stop buying juice I can't use?

Thanks!!

I've seen 3 posts in the past 2 days on this exact subject, or at least a subject very similar.

I don't know much about your flavors as I've never used them, so I'm not of much more help unfortunately.

I obviously didn't search hard enough :'(

It would have been more of browsing through the past couple days of posts, which I wouldn't have done either. Wheezing is similar to shortness of breath but you wouldn't think to search one for the other. I don't blame you :) That's why I didn't mind linking.

Appreciate it! Been doing some reading, it could be so many things.

Mt. Baker is mainly flavorwest, few others mixed in from tfa and capella, but mostly fw. Sounds like you are sensitive to a molecule common to those flavors.it's also possible that your mixes are too acidic or basic, either would cause some irritation.

Cheers for the input!

It seems like the darker the liquid the higher the irritation, though I realise that probably doesn't narrow things down much.

It could be diketones (I'm sensitive to them and also get a tight, sore chest when vaping D-laden juices), or it could be your vaping setup "chucking the clouds"... I have noticed that my chest gets tight after a long night of vaping subohm.

Yeah diketones are one of the things I'm looking into.

It can't be the volume I'm vaping, that stays pretty static.

I have a strong feeling that diacetyl does this to me. When I switched to v2 Cap flavors, the symptoms have decreased dramatically, although I can still get the tight chest. But it usually happens, again, after a heavy night of vaping.

For me, chocolates can cause some trouble, as well as some spicy flavours (TPA cinnamon spice for example). Caramels too, but only if I vape them too long and too hard. These days I tend to avoid dark flavourings when possible, just due to coil gunking.

Diketones haven't been an issue for me yet. They seem to be for some people, or are at least the go-to suspect for it.

buyteric acid is a known inhalation irritant and becoming more and more popular in place of diketones such as acetoin and acetyl propionyl. and of course Diacetyl...but you wont really ever find straight diacetyl in a flavor.

You'd be surprised.

I find citrus flavours do this to me, and it's only recently as well. Store bought flavours that I used to love, I can i longer really vape.

Also, having done a few recipes with TPA strawberry recently, and then looking back over a few things from the past I've made that i enjoyed but I couldn't puff too much or I'd wheeze, im now pretty certain TPA strawberry is one for me. I've been meaning to do a single mix of it and find out for sure.

There's one flavour in particular that I absolutely love and used to buy in massive bulk, but it's been bugging me recently, and now I can't remember the last time I used it. It's by a local (UK) website and the guy that runs it is fairly legit and I'm semi tempted just to email him and ask him for a list of flavours he uses in it so I can try them all myself at single percentages and try and work out what it is that doesn't work for me, then maybe ask him to make some huge batches for me with an alternative.

It's really frustrating having the secrecy of this industry (rightly so though that secrecy may be) end up making you wary of trying new things and almost knowing that you're like "allergic" to an ingredient of food, however if you want to buy food without that ingredient, tough because they're not listed, and if you want to make your own without that ingredient, tough because you don't even know what it is.

It's always a very distinct feeling that I recognise straight away and it's always in fruity juices. I just wish I could know or work out what molecule it is so I could just do whatever I could do avoid it.

I have these juices that are store bought and 90/10 and everyone swears they are like the smoothest tastiest flavours ever, and I agree, they taste delicious, but I just can't vape them because they make me flare up instantly and it's super frustrating.
