Just dove in a purchased some DIY gear and flavors
submitted about 10 years ago by OctaVariuM8

Hey all,

So I'm totally new to the world of DIY e-liquid, but I feel I might be pretty good at it. When I was younger I was a chef (and went to culinary school and such), but decided to go in a different direction career wise. I've been looking for a creative outlet that uses my pallet, and I think I may have found one.

Just wanted to thank everyone here for the posts and advice that I've been reading over the last week or so. Here's the list of what I just bought:

Order ^(you may need to click on it or drag to enlarge, I had to shrink it a little in my browser to get it all to fit)

Anyone have any starting advice outside of what's available in the side bar? I'm obviously looking to use the flavors I just got, but if anyone has recipes I should check out or anything like that I'd appreciate it.

Thanks!

I'd recommend picking up dragon fruit... I have no idea what it's like but it seems like every recipe I see out there calls for it...

Yeah, I wanted to but it was sold out on the site I used, and I'm not sure I want to pay separate shipping for one bottle once it comes back in stock. I may just mess around with the stuff I have for now and get more comfortable with diy.

Yeah you can definitely make good enough stuff without it! I've never used it but I gotta admit I'm gonna pick some up in my next order to see what all the fuss is about haha.

Haha let me know how it goes. It has a pretty unique flavor, but in my opinion you could get by with a faint amount of strawberry since it is a very subtle tasting fruit...though I am not sure what dragonfruit flavoring is like.

To me, it's just kind of a light, sweet, almost generic fruity taste and works better as a complementary flavor than a primary. I use it as a sort of filler to smooth out mixes with strong, dominant fruit flavors. Absolutely not a necessity, but definitely a nice one to have in your cabinet.

Get used to each flavor on its own before you mix them. As you know from the kitchen, some flavors will overpower others. Once you get used to the strengths and weaknesses of each individual flavor, you will be a natural at creating new things.

MOST important, don't forget to have fun! :)

Thanks! Is it safe to start at 5% flavoring for each, try it out as like a 1mL batch, then see how it tastes before diving into making my own recipes? I assume it's safe to copy others recipes if I know the quantities and experiment that way as well, maybe tweak things for my personal preference and such.

I do 5ml batches. FA (flavourarts) start at 2%. Most others at 5%. Always exceptions tho! (TFA ripe banana, jeez) welcome!

Oh yeah, scales are a big plus for most. Took the place of all my syringes/pipettes. Cleaner for me too

good luck with the grape candy. I can't quite get any mix right without it being to harsh.

Too harsh how? Like too much of a throat hit, or just a harsh taste?

I've mixed anything from 15% - 3% grape candy, 3 - 6 mg nic, and even added sweetener. It always tastes chalky and/or harsh on a throat hit.

Tried adding a lil bit of smooth as well, just no luck so far. Which sucks cause I love some grape standalones or mixed flavor juice.

Grape seems to be a tough one for some reason.

I haven't tried grape candy yet, but it is in my shopping cart. I love the grape that my local B&M has.

I wonder if a couple drops/10ml citric acid would mellow it out a bit?
