Long time lurker, figured I'd finally contribute! I also have a question about strawberry...
submitted about 10 years ago by sd_junglist

Names Mike...thought I'd finally introduce myself and join in the party.

Been lurking/taking notes/tweaking and the like for the last 4 months or so. Would like to say thanks to all on here, your input, knowledge, and kindess is truly a tremendous resource to all us DIY'ers.

So I have a question on Strawberry, mainline TFA ripe. For some reason, I get zero taste with this after even an overnight steep, let alone longer. I recently made the ever popular Mustard Milk, and taste nothing when it comes to the strawberry. Is it because the recipe calls for straight strawberry and not ripe? I only had ripe on hand because a recipe I sell to friends that is super popular has a lot of strawberry ripe in it( I cant taste it in there either), and I wanted to try the mustard milk really bad so i gave it a go.

Can someone recommend a better strawberry? Figured I'd buy some CAP soon, and maybe a few others. I guess I'm really wondering-is it just me or is it common with strawberry in general? Also-did I do the mustard milk a huge injustice by using Strawberry Ripe? Any help/info/feedback is greatly appreciated.

Ripe is like an addition. I always do ripe with FA strawberry to get a pure strawberry flavor. I mix that with a tad of champagne and it's wonderful. Currently my ADV summertime vape. On its own works with so much to add sweetness and body to other fruits but doesn't overpower. Oddly it's what people tend to smell in the actual vapor.

FA strawberry is outstanding , never tried TFA ripe or Capella's "ripe" strawberry .

Pretty sure Capella's has something along those lines .

like i said, the ripe gives sweetness and body without imparting too much strawberry flavor. add it to watermelon for the juiciness etc...

What's your notes on champagne? I'm trying to work with it now for a vanilla dragonfruit champagne but I'm having trouble with the %. Tried at both 3 and 8

What percentages? I've been attempting to mix these two with meh results, knowing in the back of my head it just must be the percentages I'm using (typically 2% FA, 1% ripe)

6% ripe, 3% strawberry, 1% champagne... On mobile so hard to format.

Vaping it right now tho, hot summer night and so nice.

What % are you using it at? Ripe needs a pretty high percentage. Try 10-12%

I just followed the standard mustard milk recipe of 6% strawberry. Will def double it if i make anymore before getting any diff concentrates.

I'm currently mixing with about 5-6% TFA Ripe Strawberry and 1-2% CAP Strawberry. Still trying to find out where it works for me, but find the combo gives a fuller strawberry flavour compared to either by themselves.

I use a 2:1 ratio of TFA Strawberry and TFA Strawberry Ripe, currently in a mix I have 10% Strawberry and 5% Strawberry Ripe. A hint of Dragonfruit (0.42% is my magic number) and a drop of sour makes an excellent strawberry for me

Oooh some sneaky dragonfruit in there, will have to try that!

I was about to try a drop of lime in there (going for the sour edge), so we're close! :)

Yeah same. I have a few recipes that folks love that have strawberry, they are ok but I taste no strawberry lol.

One of the main reasons I've never tried to develop a killer strawberry custard...

I know strawberry ripe contains higher amounts of EM compared to regular, so it may be flavor muting caused by the EM, but it usually doesn't show up after only an overnight steep :/

I used 3% strawberry ripe and dropped the regular strawberry 3% in mustard milk because I enjoy the mix, so I don't see anything wrong with using straight strawberry ripe.

As for other strawberries, I wouldn't suggest CAP, from what I've tasted it's just a worse TFA strawberry. Doesn't add anything unique to a mix except making it taste bad. Hangsen's makes a pretty interesting strawberry, and FA always has great flavors; their strawberry is no exception.

Interesting, I prefer INW, INW Shisha, TFA (regular), and CAP strawberry. To me, FA smells great but the taste does not come through much, just like TFA ripe. I use these two to enhance other berry flavors.

If you have not tried INW strawberry or the shisha strawberry, I implore you to do so. They are a game changer IMO.

Sooo say I have a recipe that uses Ripe and EM, am I just muting my poor regular strawberry

Anything with EM and you're muting the flavors. A lot of flavors contain EM to begin with, just that Ripe compared to regular has more.

Hmm... I will try a mix without it and see how it goes

Same here, can't really taste most strawberries. CAP Sweet Strawberry and FLV Strawberry I get some flavor from, but it's mostly a jam type flavor. INW Shisha Strawberry I can actually taste though. Also if you add a bit of Raspberry it seems to make the Strawberries come through more.

Strawberry and strawberry ripe are two different beasts. Like you I cant really taste the strawberry ripe. Only mix it really came out was mixed with Tfa green apple, and it wasnt all that good.

The ripe is more for finishing touches. If want a tasteful and more predominant flavor, do yourself a favor and get the regular strawberry.
