I've been at it for 3 months now, and now I have developed some sort of OCD...
submitted about 10 years ago by 1800fullytorqued

Now, every time I eat a dessert of some sort, I start calculating recipes in my head.

My wife makes a bomb ass peach crisp and while I'm shoving it down my throat I'm thinking:

  • TFA Vanilla Bean Ice Cream 4%

  • FA Peach 2%

  • FA White Peach 1%

  • CAP Cinnamon Danish Swirl 2%

  • TFA Brown Sugar .5%

That pretty much covers everything in the recipe, except for the oatmeal part of the "crisp". I'm thinking I'll get the buttery aspect from the VBIC. I haven't whipped this up yet, but it'll be the next thing I make.

I can't be the only one who does this though, right?

You're definitely not the only one. On a diet, and I think of tasty shit that I can actually eat...and then make it in to a flavor. Usually turns out decent.

I may need to start doing this... I've been spending the time I would have in the gym, in the mixing lab instead and it's starting to show.

I deconstruct my food for juice recipes all the time. I've had to start keeping a journal of my random thoughts and ideas in order to use them down the road, I'm horribly forgetful. And I have a peach pie custard recipe that I add TFA Apple Pie to at 2% for the pie aspect. The apple also plays well with the peaches I use.

Absolutely not =).

I draw my inspiration for most of my recipes from things I eat/drink.

My 'nana Puddin' recipe was developed after eating Banana Pudding over the holidays...

Small amounts of AP may be able to get you that oatmeal flavor you're looking for.

I generally add way less, like one drop per ml. Shit is super strong imo

As the other guy said, a drop-by-drop basis would be your best bet. If you use too much it'll give a peanut flavor instead of an oat flavor.

In my quest to make a sticky rice flavor I came across hexanal (not hexanol) which is a key flavor volatile of oatmeal.

I dug a bit deeper and in my opinion, a very small amount of TFA Toasted Almond might help create an oatmeal note.

I'm not entirely sure, because my taste buds are funky after a decade of army food, but INW almond seems to also give an oaty flavor in the sub 1% range.

I have INW almond and I concur -- I believe it is a hexanal based flavor. I bought some hexanal from one of my suppliers and it smells like cut grass. But when added to anything almond based it actually leaves the impression of almond skin.

It is as close to oats and rice and maybe even sourdough as a singular volatile can be, I think. I will have to remember to mix some up with TMP and see if oatmeal can be had. I love oatmeal cookies.

Yet another reason to stalk your posts. I've been working on an oatmeal raisin cookie since I started diy. But I'm lightyears behind you in knowledge.

Thanks for your input. Unfortunately I don't have any almond :(

The only nut I have in my stash is hazelnut. Do you think that would help at all?

I'm not sure, honestly. All the hazelnuts I have are crisp and dry -- the opposite of your goal. Maybe FA? Never tried theirs. Report back!

I have the TFA DX version. I might add a touch of that and some AP, and see where that gets me.
