Attack of the Clones: A Real Nightmare - A recipe and a few notes on cloning
submitted about 10 years ago by Furyxus

First, I'd like to start off by thanking the members of this community. I was a new vape enthusiast, complaining about the prices of juices, when I saw this sub linked in /r/electronic_cigarette, specifically someone mentioning /u/fizzmustard clone of 'nana cream. I was enticed, began reading, and made the plunge. I read and mixed and kept doing so.

Cloning my favorite juices has taught me a couple of things, so I wanted to share my thoughts with this community and offer (what I believe to be) a viable clone for a complex and delicious juice by none other than /u/_Bombies .. A Real Nightmare.

Without further delay, here is the recipe I have:

(Cap) Dutch Chocolate Mint - 4%

(LA) Mint Chocolate Chip - 2%

(TFA) Double Chocolate (Dark) - 1%

(TFA) Fudge Brownie - 2%

(TFA) Mild Black - 2%

(CAP) Root Beer - 2%

(FA) Cookie - 2%

(TFA) Graham Cracker - 3%

(TFA) Smooth - 1 drop per 5 mL

I use this sort of bottle for drops, as a reference

I'd like to say that I know that this is not a perfect 1:1 clone. I will outline in my notes how I know it is not perfect. My hope is that people enjoy it, expand upon it, discuss it and make some progress from where I currently am.

Now to Cloning Notes

Us humans have five main senses: sight, smell, touch, taste, and hearing. We may think the juices speak to us, but they don't. We'll leave sound out of this one. Same with touch, as most juices are just sticky. That leaves us with sight, smell, and most importantly, taste.

Utilizing these three senses is critical, in my opinion, when trying to exactly clone a juice. I'll talk about how I have used them on my journey to clone A Real Nightmare.

Sight: This wasn't too difficult to figure out, it seems to be a less darkened chocolate color. Many combinations will get us here, so I've used this sense as a sort of last check. My recipe looks to be the same color as the real deal, which doesn't mean a whole lot, but it helps when trying to perfect a clone.

Smell: This is where it gets interesting. I was certain that the mint chocolate flavor of ARN was a combination of Dutch Chocolate Mint and Double Chocolate (Dark). But when mixed, the smell wasn't quite right when compared to the real deal. I then smelled Mint Chocolate Chip (LorAnn's) and I could smell it in there. So I started adding small amounts until I got to a taste that I believe was right. Next is the cookie-like smell, almost a muffin, that I get from ARN. /u/deadnugent posted a recipe including graham cracker and mild black by TFA, and some great discussion took place there. As you can see, both of these flavors appear in my recipe. However, the first thing that came to mind every time I smelled it was cookie. Some sort of cookie. After spending some time reading about cookie flavors, I picked up what seemed to be the best: FA cookie. This is one place I believe I'm close, but I'm wrong. The taste seems quite close, but the smell is not quite right. It's not quite cookie enough. Many variations of FA cookie, TFA graham cracker and TFA Mild Black were tried, and I'm left with the recipe I've given above. I also use TFA fudge brownie, as it adds a subtle chocolate flavor but helps a lot with with the cookie/ muffin smell I mentioned above along with the taste.

Taste: This is what is most important after all, isn't it? This is what we are ultimately going for. ARN is undoubtedly a very, very complex juice. I may very well be going overboard with the amount of ingredients and thinking, but I can't see this as being a two or three ingredient recipe. An awful lot is going on. There's a thin mint cookie at the front and center, with some slight tobacco and (what I believe to be) root beer on the exhale. I've messed around with TFA mild black quite a bit, and it's my favorite TFA tobacco to use. I get a little bit of a biscuit/ cookie/ graham cracker from it, hence my belief that it is in the real thing to some extent. Comparing my clone to the real deal, I believe there is something else in there, adding to the tobacco. Perhaps a tiny amount of another tobacco, or different tobacco entirely that is quite close to TFA's Mild Black. I believe I'm close, but it's not quite there. I'd like to say the same for the root beer. I think CAP's root beer tastes great and I love it in my clone, but I believe it's either the wrong root beer, or there's a missing ingredient that alters the root beer's flavor a bit. Either way, I believe I'm wrong here somewhere. On to the chocolate. I wholeheartedly believe the CAP's Dutch Chocolate Mint is the dominant chocolate and mint flavor here. I think it gets help from other chocolate flavors, but it's definitely king. I played around quite a bit with LA's Mint Chocolate Chip, as well as TFA Double Chocolate (Dark) and other mint flavors like Mint Candy or CAP's peppermint, and eventually came to the mint chocolate base that is listed in my recipe. If someone else believes I'm dead wrong or comes up with something better, then fabulous. Again, my recipe is not perfect, but I think it is close enough to mix and enjoy as a very close alternative.

IN CONCLUSION

All in all, cloning juices has taught me an awful lot. This is the first clone of a popular juice I've made that I think is close enough to warrant it's own post for discussion. Again, I'd like to thank this community and everyone who contributes. At the end of the day, if you've made a juice you enjoy, damn anyone else who thinks otherwise. Cheers!!

Don't give up, you have at least one of the ingredients right -- at the right percentage too. If by chance you manage to nail 6 out of the 9 flavors I used for this recipe, I have a job offer waiting at the end for you.

Oh SHOOT! is this a fist bump from the mighty bombies??! Thanks for the encouragement. I'm an engineering student with a job in the practice, so I can't see myself taking a position in the juice industry. If you're into the modding scene, however......

Excellent offer, I'd say if he nails at least 6 It'll likely be through great thinking and perserverence.. chance may well have a part to play though :)

I see _Bombies as Bob Barker and Furyxus as the contestant trying to make it through Price is Right to the Final Showdown.

I don't like the juice, so I won't be making this clone, but I really appreciate the thought process and your analysis in making this. This subreddit needs more posts like this, and less posts about what people got in the mail today. That being said, enjoy some gold for making this subreddit a better place.

I've been a redditor for 3 years, and this is the first post that got me gold. I can't thank you enough. I have to say, that it was your 'nana cream recipe that gave me a major breakthrough in my KTR clone, which will come soon, along with an inspired recipe for the community. Let me say thank you for the kind words, and repay the favor friend. Enjoy some gold yourself.

Edit: words

I look forward to making your KTR recipe, and I'm always actively taking comments on my clone in an attempt to get closer, so if you have any, don't hold back :)

I believe I'm super close, and what I've currently got is a great alternative. My roommate can't tell the difference, but he doesn't have the most complex palate. I'll share a few notes with you and we can discuss the progress and move forward

Also, from what I've taste of product X, make sure you have some sort of light cinnamon around. Most people don't realize the cinnamon notes.

I don't get any cinnamon at all from product X. In fact, my current recipe has more cream flavors that complement the peach to give it that authentic peach taste. I still have tweaking to do, but when I believe I'm close enough, I'll post it and see what folks think.

This is my #1 favorite juice. Can't wait to try this recipe! Thank you so much for such a detailed analysis. It was interesting seeing your thought process and how the juice changed for you.

Honestly, thank you for the comment and compliment! I genuinely want some more discussion on this juice, and I want people to give my recipe a shot and share their thoughts to help the community expand upon it. Give this a shot and let me know what you think! I know there are a lot of ingredients involved, so it's unlikely that most vapers will have all the necessary ingredients. If you ever get a chance to try it, let me know what you think!!

Honestly, I love ARN so much I'd be more than willing to make an order solely for these flavors. I just started DIY...a whole week ago! But I already have two juices I enjoy, though nothing I can ADV like ARN. Hence my joy at finding such a great recipe. :)

Thanks for posing your recipe! It sounds like it's pretty similar. I don't have cheesecake graham crust, and only just made my first flavorah purchase. I'll give this a shot sometime though!!

Cheesecake Graham crust is a pretty good flavor, you should definitely pick that one up. I almost always use it in place of other Graham cracker flavors now.

Interesting, thanks for the tip! I'll have to try some out. In your recipe, you use it at half a percent. Is it a strong flavor?

Hate to poke an old post, but thanks very much for this. It's quite close, but I've added a hint of FA peppermint to give it more 'mintiness' and I swear the original has a maple taste on the exhale so I am trying various maple flavor additions. I've also bumped up the Mild Black (a personal favorite) to 4% and dropped the GC altogether, but those are just personal preferences, not in line with the original.

by Furyxusabout 10 years ago

I haven't tried FA peppermint, so I can't comment. I've tried CAP peppermint and it was just wrong. I've been playing around with 0.5% more of each Dutch chocolate mint and mint chocolate chip, and that helps. I don't get anything maple at all, but if you do then by all means play around! That's an interesting take on the mild black versus graham cracker; I might give it a shot one of these times. I'm glad you were able to try it out! From the feedback I've gotten, folks have been quite pleased with it.

Had to bail on the FA peppermint, too overpowering even at 1 drop/10ml...totally chokes out the chocolate; I will try bumping the dutch choc and MCC. I've always found the Mild Black to impart some graham undertones, and it really works well here.

Yea, peppermint is just not the right kind of mint that mixes here. I was always hesitant to go too high on the mild black since I only get a little bit of tobacco from ARN, so I started low and worked my way up to 2%. If you like it higher though, then that's great! That's what DIY is all about.
