How is this a "3D Printer" in any way?

Mixing flavoring and nicotine into VG/PG doesn't involve any kind of printing (unless you want to label the bottle you put it in, maybe).

Copying from another thread: Your absolutely right it is a buzzword and there really isn't anything 3D about this version its movement in 1-axis at a time 2-axis total. But figured had to drum up interest!

Sorry, engineers are notoriously bad at naming their own inventions lol... can't be great at everything!

It's releasing high value liquids in the correct amounts on a specific spot?

It's basically an inkjet printer. I'd roll with it unapologetically.

Not sure of it's because I'm on mobile but all I'm seeing is a few pics and a couple of lines of blurb. Mind filling us in on some more details about the project?

It's an open hardware (meaning the plans and components going into it can be obtained and build easily by anyone) printer to precisely measure and mix ejuice. So you download a flavor and press print and out comes your juice. No messing around with creating your own recipes (you can if you want though!) and trying to get the perfect amounts. Just hit print and you get the exact flavor every time.

And if the project wins I get a trip to space, so that's pretty neat to lol

If you like the concept and want to support the project I'd greatly appreciate a follow and skull (hackadays version of likes) you'll also then get updates on progress / when it gets completed. Try checking it on a PC? Setting up an account takes ~30seconds. Right now I only need like 5 or so skulls to take me to the top 200 of 650 entries and I just launched the project tonight!

The only problem I see here is the syringes. Fuck all the cleanup. Mixing by weight still sounds simpler... I imagine whatever you've scaled the system up to, you've still got to load the bottles into the right section, put clean syringes up, program it into the machine, then take it all back down, clean syringes, and put everything sway.

But never the less, still a fun project to work on?

by CarbonFire3DPrintsabout 10 years ago

Yup! I know its not perfect by any means but also keep in mind I'm not designing this for profit and have very limit funds to build it. Just been one of my side projects I was doing for fun until I stumbled on the competition and figured why not? Helps the vape community and gives me a chance to go to space. It's a win-win!

there is a better way to do all this. You can buy these motorised devices which contain a motor and dispense exactly ~1mL/drip and then it just needs the backend to fill these with the right juice and stuff.

by NameThatWasntTakenabout 10 years ago

wont work for sub 1ml amounts.

1 points

by asuspowerabout 10 years agoProud Sidebar Reader!

yeah, that's a huge issue with ejuice because you need more accuracy than +/-1mL

With most recipes using 6-12 flavors, plus sweetener/em/acid etc. Can you only do 3 at a time?

3 points

by CarbonFire3DPrintsabout 10 years ago

Nope that's just a basic render to show the concept. Copied from another thread: It will be scale-able. For example the slide I have is 6 feet long and could accommodate up to 27 flavors. The average vaper may not have room for a device that long and will be able to scale it down to fit their needs.

by fatclownbabyabout 10 years agoMixologist

That is pretty awesome!

It'd be sweet if it was rotary, like a six shooter and spin around to the right flavor. Much less space consumed (and much more complex unfortunately).

I thought about that because logically that would make the most sense for a product being sold. My goal is making it so anyone could build one with off the shelf hardware! So as simple as possible even if that means taking up more space.

Now that I'm on my desktop and not my phone, this looks a lot better. It's the sort of thing one could easily have in a small back room of a shop to make house juice with, or in a home to DIY.

I can see this as a sweet setup for a b&m store. Just choose from a menu of eliquid blends, your nic level, pv/vg ratio and bottle size and it goes to work. Shop owner just has to keep the flavors filled and such. Sort of like those soft drink dispensers that mix and dispense various drink mixes in different combinations.

This sounds like a great idea. I really hope all the best for you and hopefully it doesn't cost too much to have one in my home one day

You'll be able to make it yourself for cheap. That is the goal of this project! If you support the idea and want updates on the project follow it and toss me a skull (like) over on hackaday! That way as soon as it is finished you will be able to have it in your home :)

He stands very little chance but just the thought sends shivers down my back...

Some people are willing to let money and uneducated personal bias put them on the wrong side of history and progress. According to him marijuana is evil but lets go ahead and legalize online gambling because that's soooo much better and clearly helps sick people. Lol the guy is a joke.

Hello fellow vapers!

Project creator here feel free to AMA! It would mean a lot if you guys could take the time to register on hackaday and follow / give a skull (like). Trying to make this a reality and winning a trip to space would be pretty neat... I wonder what vaping in zero G would be like.. one way to find out!

How exactly does it work? Say I'm making a 3 flavored recipe, with pg, vg, and nic (6 total ingredients). Would you walk me through the process please?

0 points

by CarbonFire3DPrintsabout 10 years ago

Sure thing. So first you would place an empty bottle in the carriage. Then you would download a pre-made recipe (or make your own). Select your vg%pg and nicotine content and press print. Simple as that. The printer then commences mixing and once complete will return to the home position with the bottle filled and ready to start the next cycle.

Let me know if you have other questions be glad to answer them! (PS Follow the project over on hackaday and give me a skull to receive updates as the project nears completion!)

by RipCityVapeabout 10 years agoMixologist

Is there a limit to how many ingredients you can use? Would I be able to mix a juice made of 5 flavors, vg, pg, and nic?

Also, how does it measure each ingredient? By that I mean, do you dump VG into a "VG container" attached to the machine? Or does it take it straight from the original container?

What exactly does an ejuice printer do?

3 points

by TomHanksDiedabout 10 years agoPâtissier

It's so simple, it prints ejuice. As in 3D printing ejuice. Ejuice 3d print. Print 3d ejuice. How else could you possibly explain it.

by swishersplitterabout 10 years ago

Automatically concocts e liquid based on user recipes. 3d printing is a buzzword shoehorned into the name of this thing.

It looks a like cool project and it's awesome that OP is open sourcing it, but the name is terrible.

Your absolutely right it is a buzzword and there really isn't anything 3D about this version its movement in 1-axis at a time 2-axis total. But figured had to drum up interest! Also not just user recipes, I'd love to have a site going that user can download pre-tested mixes / review juices and submit their own.

Sorry, engineers are notoriously bad at naming their own inventions lol... can't be great at everything!

I'd look into the drink mixing automatation and add a scale below; 3 syringes wouldn't provide a very versatile mixing solution.

Thanks reddit! Within less than 2 days of this project being up I am in the top 80 entries out of 600 some! It looks like I'll be moving on to the next round, exciting stuff!

Keep up the good work guys! I've had a ton of suggestion and looks like I will be redesigning to work with a 3d printed Peristaltic Pump (http://hackaday.com/2014/09/16/a-3d-printed-peristaltic-pump/) instead of the syringes. Still open-source still cheap. Don't forget to follow the project and give me a skull for some support and to get updates!

Calling it a 3-D Printer when it neither prints, or does anything that requires putting 3-D in the title, seems like both a misguided attempt to cash in on 3-D printing hype, and misleading and detrimental to the understanding of what the device actually is.

by CloudColorZackabout 10 years agoMixologist

Why would you set up a printer with multiple different flavors when you could just take all of your flavors and make a flavor base? This is just overcomplicating what is already a simple process.

Also, how exactly will an eliquid mixing station lead to marijuana legalization?

1 points

by CarbonFire3DPrintsabout 10 years ago

Not just a mixing station, mainly people making their own ejuice. Read the description on the site. Think about the millions the gov. collects from the sale of big tobacco products. If that ends they'll need a substitute.

1 points

by CarbonFire3DPrintsabout 10 years ago

Also it probably won't make it happen but it will prevent a new politician from shutting down the systems some states have chosen to implement if they no longer have millions a day coming in from tobacco.
