I accidentally cloned one of my favourite juices in a single guesswork mix.
submitted about 10 years ago by cheesebanana

The juice: Moon Sugar by Mr Good Vape. It's a big favourite of mines, and i know plenty of people that love it, but overall the flavour, and the brand in general, doesn't get a huge amount of hype around these parts, despite being excellent. It was one of the first recipes i thought to try and clone when i started DIY but i looked around a bunch and didnt even find much discussion on the matter, so i just left it to one side.

The flavour profile from their website: "Moon Sugar delivers a space atmosphere that registers a sweet delicacy to your palate. The high concentration of sugar cookie makes a savory blend that includes two additional flavors, butterscotch and graham cracker pie crust." I absolutely adore this flavour because its 80/20, and its super super light and doesn't tire out your tastebuds. Its light and sweet and almost slightly savoury and it doesnt give me any vapers tongue at all.

So how this came to happen was, i tried that fairly popular sugar bear clone and was like, you know, this is JUST like moon sugar, but with cinnamon instead of the other stuff. Who'd have thought it was that simple. I was enjoying the clone anyway, but then the cinnamon roll started to bug my lungs and i was like nah, lets just cut that and try to make moon sugar.

I tweaked the recipe with total guesses and came up with the following:

Cheesecake (Graham Crust) TPA - 4%

Sugar Cookie CAP - 6%

Cinnamon Danish Swirl CAP - 7% (despite this high percent, i swear you get almost zero cinnamon flavour in there at all)

EM 10% Dilution - 1%

Caramel Original TPA - 2%

And thats goddamn it. I just looked at the profile and thought "okay, sugar cookie, ive got that. graham cracker crust? Yup i've got that. Butterscotch? I don't have that but hey, caramel smells pretty much exactly like the notes i get from the original. Cool lets guess some amounts. Sure lets try that."

And that was it. I did a double blind at work today with a guy that loves the juice as well, and he couldn't tell which one was the real one.

Anyway, moral of the story is. Sometimes pulling numbers out of your ass and hoping it tastes good, is all you need to do. Also moral to vendors: don't be too specific with your flavour profiles i guess.

Moon sugar was my first favorite store bought juice. It was like crack for me. And I thought it was funny that it's called Moon Sugar and I was playing the elder scrolls at the time (moon sugar/skooma is an illicit drug in the game). Thank you for this! Going to try this out!

I might try this with churro instead of Danish (at way lower percent, obviously), hazelnut instead of caramel, and adding a percent or two of cap vc. Won't be the same thing by a long stretch, but might be fantastic. Thanks for the inspiration!

I actually toyed with the idea of hazelnut as well last night but in the interest of a clone, caramel seemed like the way to go. Let me know how this turns out yo.

Churro?! Where might one find this flavor?

I love that they include "graham cracker pie crust" as one of the flavors in the profile. Like, GEE I WONDER WHAT SPECIFIC FLAVORING THAT COULD BE?

Awesome job though! I've never had the stuff but it always sounds really yummy. Figured this means I have no excuse to try it now and whipped up a bottle. Smells very nice! Going to rewick now and try it. Any thoughts on steep time?

EDIT: Daaaamn thats pretty good even as a shake n vape. Bet it would be crazy good after steeping. Great work :)

Did you order from modadropship?

Glad you liked it! I went through 20ml~ of my 60ml mix today and I mixed it yesterday afternoon so, minimal steeping required!

  • 7% Cap vanilla custard (I use V1, I'd knock it down to 5-6% with V2)

  • 3% Cap Cinnamon Danish Swirl

  • 1% TFA Cinnamon Danish

  • 1.5% TFA Graham Cracker Clear

  • 0.5% FA Catalan Cream (optional, I find it cuts the "bite" of the cinnamon a little)

It's ok shake and vape (the cinnamon note will be VERY sharp), but it really comes together after aging for 3-4 weeks. I don't like what heat does to custard, let this one age on its own.

I'll have to try this. I have Cap sugar cookie and Cap CDS and EM. I don't have the other two flavors but I do have FW caramel and One on One Cheesecake. Might work?

by cheesebananaabout 10 years ago

Could do. Graham cracker crust is really just the crust though, not the cake part.

I have something very similar but it uses the v2's of CDS and Sugar cookie so I use much less of them.

I'm kind of new at this, and I'm looking to order a bunch of flavors to make different recipes and I want to try this one out. But I'm confused on the EM part what does that mean exactly? and how do I dilute the juice?

EM stands for Ethyl Maltol. You can purchase it from many companies, but I use The Flavor Apprentice, and the dilution is already done for you at "10%".

Buy TFA Cotton Candy. Same exact thing.

by cheesebananaabout 10 years ago

EM is short for Ethyl Maltol. A specific type of sweetener. When it's listed in a recipe it's almost always referring to a mixture of 9 parts pg and 1 parts EM, but I just included that for completeness sake. Wherever you buy your concentrates from, search for ethyl maltol and you'll almost definitely find a Premade solution mixed up and ready to go.

What version of sugar cookie and CDS are you using?

1 points

by cheesebananaabout 10 years ago

V1 on both counts.

Somebody clarify this while im here. What is the general rule for v1/v2 when it comes to manufacturers? V1 is diketone filled right, v2 is diketone free or at least AP instead of DA, right?

And DX for TPA is like the opposite. Standard is AP or free of diketones, DX is ALL THE DIKETONES MMMMM ADDED DIKETONES FOR INCREASED BUTTERFEEL

2 points

by _Laughmore_about 10 years ago

For Capella, v1 is original and v2 was formulated without acetoin and acetyl propionyl, using butyric acid instead. For TPA, the DX versions were formulated in the same way, but there are also flavors like "French Vanilla Creme" that are newly formulated with no acetoin or acetyl propionyl. I suspect DX versions were made for flavors that could be reformulated while tasting similar, the other were renamed because they taste too different.

So it's the opposite of what you mentioned, DX is TPA's "v2" - do not confuse with "deluxe" for pomegranate deluxe and vanilla bean ice cream deluxe, those are loaded with acetoin/acetyl propionyl

The acronym AP is usually reserved for acetyl pyrazine @ 5%, a common corny/grainy sweetener

Thank you so much for this. I haven't had Moon Sugar since I moved from Philly and couldn't goto my B&M. And now I don't have to. This looks like it's on point. Awesome work

OK, I finally just gt some Cheesecake (Graham Crust) the other day. I have everything else on hand. I'll mix this up and give it a try. Thanks

I did that once when I started; I managed to recreate the flavor profile of MBV's Vanilla Butternut without using any Vanilla Butternut flavoring. It had 10-12 different flavors in it, but the end result was identical flavorwise. I wasn't trying to, it just kind of happened.

I know I'm late to the party, but with no prior knowledge of Moon Sugar, I saw this recipe and knew it would be something I liked. I took the recipe to my local vape shop that I visit frequently and had the guy up there mix it. Holy vape. This shit's good.
