Flavor and atomizer.
submitted over 10 years ago by acierCRISIS

Maybe this isnt the place and if its not feel free to delete mods.

So i just got a new atomizer (tugboat clone) and i was shocked when i coiled and fired it up. The flavor of my adv was completely diffrent. I made sure and rewicked it and my freakshow and they were completely different. I decided it had to be me so i had my sister and friend taste both. Same result.

Which begs the question do you guys change your mixing based on the atomizer you guys use? What are you guys using?

I went from a Kanger Protank Mini to a Eleaf Lemo Drop and had to drop the NIC considerably, other than that, no. (the main problem was the TH from transitioning from mouth/lung hits to lung hits, no taste difference though)

I still rebuild the coils for my wife and her Kanger tank (not a protank, but one of the EVODs), but no changes for her at any time.

We don't do any crazy mixes though, and having transitioned from our B&M mixes to our own, we are still figuring out our ADVs.

did you wash your atomizer? Clones come with an alarming amount of machining oil, but a soap and water wash should get most of it off.

Scrubbed with alcohol and a toothbrush.

I just rinse with hot water, never had a taste issue.... yet, and I use only clones except for my Subtank Plus.

Yep, flavor can vary greatly from RDA to RDA. I only use an Origen RDA to test my liquids. I run them hot, like 40-50w. You will be able to taste every nuance, which is great if you are tweaking small adjustments. Juice makers will try their own juice on my setup and swear it tastes better. They usually go buy one after they test it.

I wish i had a origen but they are so expensive and the clones look poor. I dont have $125 to burn. I was thinking of buying a magma clone but leaking issues really bug me. I would however deal with it if the flavor could beat a freakwhow or tugboat dead, never tried one though.

I've gotten two of my origens used from the ecig classifieds. I got a v1 for 40, and a v2 for 65. Worth every penny!

I got a magma for my first rda and unless your filling it as high as you can or leaving it on a side then you shouldn't have problems with leaking.

When I first got it I had leaking problems because I would fill it right to the top of the juice well. Now I fill it to just below the top and I rarely get leaking unless I tip it. It's not the best for taking it out and about but I still do since it's my only rda atm. If I pocket it lately I've been turning the airflow control ring so it's in between the holes so no juice can leak.

If your getting it for testing juices and vaping at home you should have no issues if your keeping it upright.

I own both a magma and freakshow. Magma wins hands down. Great flavor, everything I put it in tastes so much richer and robust than any other dripper. Freakshow has great flavor but its just not as rich.

Ill budget my cash for a clone then. Whats a good build? I was thinking 28g 7 wrap dual.

I have a few atomizers, RBAs and RDAs. And I think the atomizer and power output matters a ton due to reasons such as power of course, airflow, juice flow and type of hit.

Here's a general review of some atomizers I have, also include mod, coil size and resistance:

  • Kayfun Lite (on an EA single 18650 clone) - 1.2 ohm 30awg, mouth to lung: Good flavour, cool vape. Did not bring out harsh flavours in custards, nor the balloon flavour in high fruit/citric/malic acid flavour. However, due to airflow and juice flow you get a weak hit. I'm actually giving this away to a friend who's trying to quit. Good starter and OK flavour.
  • Magma (on various mods) - 0.75 ohm 26awg, between mouth to lung and lung hit, warm'ish vape. Brought out a lot of flavours and seemed the most accurate. If you did not pass a lot of air through the atomizer it tasted a little chemically, like the vapor stays in the chamber and cooks.
  • Plume Veil (Fat Snow Wolf clone 22650) 24awg wrapped with 30awg - 0.15 Ohm, Lung hit, warm vape. Not much flavour on the way in but was able to exhale a lot of flavour of the juice had it.
  • Subtank Plus v2 (Clopure Mini @ 17w) - 0.6 Ohm 26awg (RBA mode), warm'ish vape. Offers the most flavour in an easily accessible form mobile package. It gives me the flavour of the Magna even.

So, I do believe mod and airflow matter a lot. I think low power with low airflow are good for mouth to lung but for testing flavours I'd say mid-power on a dripper at 30watt+.

If you're testing flavours something I want to try and perhaps is good is to use a dual twisted clapton coil on a Magma clone. Maybe even the 30mm Magma clone just for it's size.

Supposedly they (dual twisted claptions) can wick up 1-2 drops of juice, any % mix. So you could vape a few inhales right from the coils, no cotton needed.

Hope this helps!

Wow this is thorough. Ive been spending the last 2 hours wrapping different coils, twisted, parallel and so on to find something im comfortable with.

Twisted is definitely a flavor boost. Parallel was a boost but i cant make them even, more practice needed.

I can only taste every nuance of flavor when running low wattage , high wattage kills the flavor for me every time no matter what i use.

Phil Busardo also says he gets superior flavor at low wattages also so i'm in good company.

Ive noticed this also. I've moved away from 22g to 26g. Im partial to dual 26g 9 wrap a t 0.5 ohms. The flavor is better imo.

Always a good idea to experiment , hope you find your ideal settings.

I have plenty of flavor and cloud RDA/RTA's, I don't change mixes for the different devices. A good mix is going to taste good no matter the device, but it is going to taste better on some. That said, a few juices are too much in something like a magma, but very very few.

This is true, good flavour is good flavour as long as the user likes it.

I change my rda and coils based on the juice I mix. I've got a collection of around 10 rda's and rtas to choose from. 101 vape always had cool shit on clearance so I'll pick up a few there. Then there are the must haves. Is buy another mutation v4 if I lost it.
