Monolith - Open for suggestions ...
submitted over 10 years ago by big_onion

This is the first recipe I came up with that I'm really proud of, and I'd love some input on ways to improve. I've shared it with some friends who seem to like it and one called it a nice ADV.

This came from some experimentation with foodpairing.com (before the site got weird) -- it showed hazelnut, apple, and honeysuckle as sharing similar flavor molecules, so I thought I'd give it a go. I originally had all TPA flavors, and the three of them together were great. Added Black Honey Tobacco (all four, TPA, 5% is still a great mix) and it was fantastic. Also Sprach Zarathustra came to mind since the strong nutty flavors of the hazelnut balanced with the floralness of the Black Honey Tobacco and honeysuckle seemed a little epic. I got in some FA and CAP flavorings and was considering ways of tweaking it, and realized the Cookie, Cream Fresh, and Vanilla Custard really complemented that original flavor. (Renamed to Monolith to account for the change while still keeping a relationship to Strauss' piece that the original was named for.)

Any suggestions are welcome. Needs a little bit of steep time, but I like tasting the changes over the first few days. Strong floral to start, then deep nutty flavor. Haven't made a bottle that lasts more than week, so I can't speak beyond that.

BTW - Fuji Apple is better than TFA's Apple by a landslide.

Looks like my kind of vape, just need DX hazel, maybe I can sub with Cap Hazel v2 for now

If you do, let me know how it is. I'm not a huge fan of the DX hazelnut. Not as creamy as the original TFA hazelnut and I taste the slightest hint of ... something odd ... but I can't be sure it's from the DX hazelnut.

I mixed it with 70% vg instead of the prescribed 70% pg, going to be miles different in flavor strength and complexity but I didn't notice until I had put all the flavors in :P Can't do more than 30% pg or I get weird tastes and mouth sensations.

If anything is "off", I would suspect the 2% Fuji - so bright and loud, clashes easily - I shouldn't judge until I let this steep, smells promising

I can't do more than 30% VG ... I get a loose cough and too much gunk building up on my windshield when I vape in the car.

2% Fuji sounds high but it works. I taste it a lot up front, but after a day or two it's not as bright. Let me know what you think and if you have any suggestions. I'm not trying to sell this or anything -- just want to make a good vape. :)

This recipe looks very odd, but your reasoning for putting it together sold me - I don't have TFA hazelnut, so I'll sub with 1% FA and 1% FW hazelnut to try it out.

It might not be for everyone, for sure, but there's something about it that I just can't put my finger on that makes it work, for me.

I've been looking for a reason to use my Black Honey Tobacco, and I don't come across too many tobacco recipes here, so I'm excited to see how this turns out. I only say it's odd because I'd have never thought to try something like this.

I've mixed it up and also added 0.25% of AP (which worked out to 1 drop per 10ml), to accent the hazelnut a touch. I'm hoping that the FW + FA Hazelnut results in a more rounded nutty flavor since FW is more floral/sweet/nutty and FA is more of a fresh/raw nut flavor, but I haven't tried combining the two until now. I've read that the TFA Hazelnut is a bit muted compared to others, which is why I kept the percentages low compared to your 4%.

Thanks for sharing the recipe! Looking forward to testing it out in a day or two.

Let me know how the FW/FA hazelnut comes out. Like I said in this thread, I'm not thrilled with the DX hazelnut from TFA, but it's all I got. I've only been mixing about a year and still have a lot to learn and there's a looooot of flavors I have yet to try. Just recently got my first FA flavors in and they've all just blown me away.

Let me know what you think. I've also found that Black Honey does will mixed with just Honeysuckle, but I like those floral kinds of flavors, though ... not for everyone, especially since a lot of people are more into desserty kinds of juices.

Also, the vanilla custard, cream fresh, and cookies are added more for mouth feel and to add a ... bottom note might by the words I'm looking for. Without them it tastes "thin". I still feel like something is missing. Like the Fuji apple isn't enough. Hm.

May I suggest removing the cookie and in its place adding some acetyl pyrazine at around .2% it should give a bit more substance to the other flavors or shall I say body to them

I'll give that a shot. Thanks!
