So I've noticed that Open Source Vapor (OSV) uses saline in nearly all their mixes and at much higher percentages than the sidebar notes recommend.
I've read some old threads about using it instead of PG for dilution etc. I'm looking to hear from people who use it in their recipes and what their experience has been.
I haven't used it , but I was reading old posts this morning about osv's use of it and the general consensus was that people did not like it. I think it was on an MF thread on VU. I am interested to hear more though.
I haven't used it yet but if you want it to be sterile when it goes in your juice, these are recommended for inhalation. Should be refrigerated after opening, so larger containers for cheaper may be a PITA
The saline doesn't need to be sterile (after all, none of the other ingredients are.) The "sterile" is recommended because it's just saline, rather than "saline solution" for contact lenses (which contains all sorts of things you absolutely do not want to vape!)
I make my own saline, which is simple and cheap. The only trick is finding salt that only contains salt, no preservatives or anti-caking agents. Don't use iodized salt, either. Luckily most grocery stores will carry at least one brand that fits that criteria, and mine carries Diamond Crystal Kosher salt. I think it cost me about $2 for a big box, plus a dollar for a gallon of distilled water. That'll make enough saline to last me for decades...but I'll probably use the salt for cooking too, so it's dual-purpose ;) .
I make my saline solution with 1/2 teaspoon of salt to 8oz of distilled water. Heat the water (I used to boil it, but realized nuking it in the microwave for a minute or two was just fine), stir in the salt until it dissolves and let it cool. Transfer to a container of your choice, and you're good to go. This makes a 0.9% saline solution (well, close enough to be indistinguishable for our needs.)
