Do I really need to be so careful with 24 mg/ml nicotine juice?
submitted over 10 years ago by [deleted]

It dawned on me that this stuff alone is as strong as some juice people vape. I still put gloves on, because it was the first time I've opened the bottle, but do I really need to be so careful with it, keep it off my skin, etc?

Isn't it similarly as safe to spill on you as vape juice? How much care should I treat it with? I know I shouldn't leave it out and open (like juice), but I don't feel like I need to worry about my mask or safety goggles like a lot of tutorials mention, probably not even gloves.

I bought a test kit and I'm still going to test my end result, but once I'm sure it's legitimately 24 mg/ml, isn't it fine to relax and skip the safety goggles and mask, and maybe even the gloves unless I spill it?

Also, I'm doing this is my kitchen. It's completely fine to rinse something off that has the juice on it in the kitchen sink, right? If it got on dirty dishes, none of it matters since I'm using dish soap on them eventually?

I want to be safe, but I feel kind of silly handling the 24mg/ml bottle with gloves knowing that some people vape similarly strong juice.

Edit:

Thanks for the advice! I think I'll skip the gloves until I'm cleaning, or working with a higher concentration. The worst I'm doing is opening the bottle and putting in a syringe anyway. I'll wear safety goggles just in case it splashes somehow. Easy enough.

Also, I'm going to not be a slob and do my dishes before I work. I have to break that dirty habit of leaving dirty dishes in the sink anyway.

complacency kills.

Logically it's not a risk, but ... keep the routine up.

Like everyone is saying, 24mg/ml isn't that strong, but it's good practice to get in the habit of preparing for when (if) you move to stronger concentrations of nicotine.

That being said, I use 100mg/ml and I don't wear gloves anymore. Honestly, to me, it just felt silly putting on a fresh pair of gloves to squirt 0.44g of nicotine solution into my mix haha. It's like a 10 second operation, I just try not to spill any.

I put my nic base in a 50ml bottle. Just shake the crap out of it before using it, take the cap off, squirt what I need. No gloves at all.

Ya it's really not hard to not spill it.

I agree with him, but for one point. Is there anything wrong with making good safety with nicotine a habit, ie, gloves at least?

It's a good idea to test your nic base's strength just to confirm what the label tells you. If it's genuinely 24 mg/ml, you're probably safe to handle it without gloves.

Just don't finger paint with it.

You're right, its not any more dangerous than 24mg eliquid. I've vaped stronger than that, I wouldn't bother with any PPE. You should still be careful storing it, you don't want kids to drink it, or a pet to eat it.

If you get it on your hands, wash it off. If you spill some on yourself, you should probably change clothes and wash it off. That stuff will still absorb through your skin.

Even with only 24mg, getting it in your eyes would probably be bad.

Rinsing stuff out in your sink is fine too imo. I know most people will rinse out much stronger nic. I always try to rinse stuff out well enough that it gets very diluted and it all goes down the drain.

Having my diy equipment near dirty dishes would bother me more, i always clean syringes and glassware in a clean sink.

I use 36 mg for my base specifically so I don't feel the need to suit up before handling my nic. It's not "harmless" so I'm still careful with it but I don't usually even wear gloves.

Honestly, it's not dangerous in comparison with higher percentange nicotine, but it would be better to treat it with good safety practice, ie. gloves.

24 wont hurt you.. kids or animals is another story. It would be best to do your dishes before you clean anything with nic on it in there. i use 100mg.. no mask.. gloves and googles yes. remember nic is diluted very easily, so even if you did get it on your dishs rise it like crazy before you use soap and your sponge and it will be fine.

I use 60 mg/ml and honestly I don't "suit up" even for longer mixing sessions. My nic bottle is pretty secure in my mixing station; it has a narrow neck so not much oxygen gets in / vapor gets out, and it's only open for a few seconds. If I plan on doing 5 10ml bottles, the nic goes in first, and I do all 5 at once, so that takes maybe a minute tops. After that there's really no risk of exposure since the mixing bottles themselves are secure as well.

The only two times I would say you definitely need PPE are:

  • when rinsing out more than a few used bottles. I did this once without gloves, and got nic-sick-pretty-quick, just from skin absorption
  • cleaning up a spill of concentrated liquid. If it's a really big spill I would go the full route including charcoal filter mask.

**Edit: I wear glasses when mixing, and if you don't wear glasses, cheap eyeshields are a pretty good idea. I've never splashed nicotine in my eyes, but I'm guessing that's going both hurt and get in the bloodstream pretty quickly.

I've used 60mg for quite a long time. I don't use gloves. I just try to keep it off my hands. It does get on my hands now and then, but I just wash my hands off with warm water.

Don't take a bath with it or be stupid and you'll be alright.

Meh, I mix with 36mg solution and doesn't do anything if it gets on my hands. I just wash it off and move on.

I don't use anything. Just don't rub your eyes, and take it slow, cleanup thouroughly, which I don't usually do at all anymore as I don't spill a drop most of the time. Eye protection can be a good idea. I've spilled tons on my hands, nothing happened. Oh, and don't go sniffing the bottle.

Never ever skip the eye goggles, why risk blindness even if its a 0.01% chance or even lower? that's too high a risk for me when it comes to my eyes especially when its a case of "i went blind as i couldn't be bothered to look in my draw for my goggles".

As a software engineer and avid gamer, it absolutely terrifies me. I agree.

I spilled a kayfun plus tank worth of 6mg/ml juice on my leg. The plastic section gave up and split right after I filled it up. How much does the kayfun hold? 4 or 5 ml?

I wiped it off immediately and jumped in the shower to wash it off completely. It still jacked me up really good. I was sweating like a whore at a baptist revival and my heart rate was 110 bpm. I was on my way to the emergency room when my body finally calmed down 90 minutes after the spill.

So I spilled some 6mg/ml on my leg and was in the shower in about 3 or 4 minutes. I still felt like I had been running a marathon.

I would say yes, take precautions. I promise you it sucks to have a nicotine overdose. A doctor can't really do anything for you except monitor you and try to keep you alive until your body gets rid of the nicotine. There is no antidote according to wikipedia. You just have to let your body get rid of it.

I'm not saying I don't believe you but how long did that sit? I've had tons of encounters with nic on my fingers or whatever and nothing to the level you got. Was it a panic /anxiety attack in anticipation of something happening? I have certainly felt too much nic before but man, that would suck.

It seemed farstretched when I read it. I've had half a 30ml bottle of 18 mg spill in my pocket and didn't notice it for a bit and didn't feel any effects from the nicotine. Sometimes I feel like people over react.

I wiped it up immediately and then got in the shower. It was at most 5 minutes before I had soap and water on it washing it off.

A whole 110 bpm?!

When you are sweating that bad and your heart rate is over 110 and you are resting it's not pleasant at all. It felt a lot faster than 110 but counting it for 60 seconds and using a phone app that uses the camera and led light both gave me ~110. It felt like 200.

That's a very good point; I've had mild nicotine ODs and they are scary as fuck. However, the PPE that's usually recommended (gloves, eyeshields, mask) are not going to help if you spill a shitload on your leg. If that were to happen to me, I'd (a) get the pants off ASAP; (b) wipe with a dry towel so as not to increase absorption by introducing more liquid, then (c) wipe with rubbing alcohol or soap and water to get as much as possible off.

Unfortunately I was wearing shorts and it hit my knee and slid down my leg to my shoes. If I would have had on jeans it wouldn't have had all that contact with my skin. I was in the shower washing with soap and water in at most 5 minutes and it still made me fell like shit.
