If you had a bucket of VG...
submitted over 10 years ago by elitegunslinger

How would you get it out and into smaller bottles? I don't want to keep having to remove the lid and increase chance of contamination.

Uline's bucket pumps are usually the way to go for me

Buy a few or at least 1 gallon jug, fill that and only open the bucket to fill the gallon jug.

Buy a Culigan water tank, fill it and get a Culigan water dispenser, and use the water knobs to fill bottles.

In the land where expenses are not a worry.

That might be the plan

I hope the plan is the Culigan water dispenser

you can get a bucket pump at a harbor freight or anyplace that sells heavy truck parts or equipment parts.

Maybe they've got the 5 gallon pail lid combo.

Ive orded a 55 gallon drum of vg and just got a pump for it.

Thats the next step!

you should be able to find a small hand pump at home depot or something that would work for the size you have now. just make sure to sanitize it

I tried this and couldn't find one at home depot and staff told me they don't offer hand pumps for 5 gallon buckets =(.

Sump pump. ;)

by elitegunslingerover 10 years ago

If I sterilize it... This might work or burn out the motor.

by RobocopSuperfanover 10 years ago

Im gonna opt for the latter, I'd be shocked to see a sump pump handling thick syrup well.

That's why specialized pumps for glycerin exist.

Yea, you will want to figure that out for sure. You would be surprised how fast hair and other things can get in there from just opening it for a matter of seconds.

Delicious. :(

And since VG attracts moisture from the environment, it will eventually take on the smell of the room it's in. Keep that sucker sealed.

Oh god, it'll just end up smelling like farts then.

Whats the verdict? Im thinking those paint bucket pouring lids are the most cost efficient choice

1 points

by elitegunslingerover 10 years ago

That's what I'm thinking, something like that or the unscrewble spout cap.

1 points

by alexxfinchover 10 years ago

Does it have a pouring spout (small hole) on the lid? If so, you can buy a pump to screw on (with a cap closure). That way everything will stay sealed up and you just have to take off a small lid to refill whatever bottle you are primarily using for your VG.

2 points

by elitegunslingerover 10 years ago

Nope, it's like one of those paint buckets that just seals. I was hoping for a port on the top.

I buy 20L at a time. I fill a 5L bottle and from there that 5L goes into 1L that goes into 100mL. I clean each bottle every 3-4 uses. You can use plastic but if you want to be careful the going for glass is your best bet. You can sterilize it to a pretty good level using an oven.

Glass is my go to for long term storage for sure, I have a gallon and 1L I've been dumping between.

If you don't need high precision, look for a handheld liquid transfer pump - they can be manual, battery, or mains powered and will allow you to siphon liquid out of the bucket and into a smaller container without having to pour anything or use funnels.

That's an idea; I'm looking into the lids with the built in spout so I can just roll it around to get the material out and reseal.

You could get some type of paint pouring lid if you can find one the right size and distribute it into 1 Liter bottles, etc.

I was looking into the ones with the spout, might be the ticket.

I've used a spout to divy up a large bucket of flavouring into smaller 250ml bottles. Make sure you sanitize the spout and entry point very carefully.

I ended up buying an emergency drinking water transfer pump. The lids that bulk apothecary uses are hard to deal with. I just cut a hole in the top of the lid with a drill while the bucket itself sat with clear food wrap over it. All said and done it does the job while minimizing the contamination of your supply.

Funnel and smaller bottles.

by elitegunslingerover 10 years ago

Ever hold a 50lb pail of VG and try to funnel it lol?

3 points

by Sandman0over 10 years ago

Transfer cup. Dip cup, pour in funnel into bottle.

Simple enough. Just do it in a clean environment.

This is how I wound up doing it. I use a big glass Pyrex measuring cup and just dump it into my gallon jug until it's full. It sucks to lose some. But until I invest in a proper bucket lid/pump, it will have to do.

That sounds like an amusing scenario I'm sure a lot of us would love to watch you attempt. ;)

An extra large turkey baster?

I'm trying to reduce the open and close contamination that occurs when you have a pit of syrup; that would work if I had my clean room 100% up.

Use my hands.

by elitegunslingerover 10 years ago

Without gloves right? Moisturizers the skin and gets it in the containers lol.

Ditch the paint bucket and buy a more suitable container.

It arrived in a 5 gallon pail; bulk is king!
