Reducing flavor % according to vaping style
submitted over 10 years ago by flipwich

It's a fact that, if one adds too much of a flavor to a mix, that flavor can mute itself. I try to keep my flavors as low as possible, usually from 0.5 to 5% max.

Typically, with this ratio of flavors, my first vapes are great. However, vaping away, the flavor starts to actually get muted to the point where I can't even taste the flavors any longer.

"Vaper's tongue", we all would advise and I think that would be a correct assessment. Olfactory overload. But, if I was careful to keep my flavors as low as I thought was possible, how is this happening?

0.5 ohm dual micro coil on an Aqua v2 running at 27W (3.85v) is my setup. I like my vapor warm, and thick. Yummy first couple of pulls which transform to zero-flavor during the course of the day. I'm suspecting that my build and vaping style is leading to olfactory overload.

So, what do? I guess I can try to change my vaping style and vape cooler, less dense vapes... or, should I reduce my flavorings even further? Like, divide all the ratios by half or more?

So this happens to me quite a lot. I tend to overindulge in specific flavor profiles for a while which of course leads to "vapers tongue". One way that works for me is switch to a neutral type vape for a few hours to get my taste buds back. My favorite recipe for doing this is RocketPuppys RY4 from VU.

Rocket RY4

Ingredient|ml|g|% :---|---:|---:|---: Nicotine juice 100 mg (100% VG)|0.9|1.13|3 PG dilutant|6.99|7.25|23.3 VG dilutant|20.1|25.35|67 Acetyl Pyrazine 5%|0.06|0.06|0.2 Bourbon (Vanilla Bourbon) (FA)|0.15|0.15|0.5 Caramel (FA)|0.15|0.15|0.5 RY4 Double (TPA)|1.5|1.5|5 Vienna Cream (FA)|0.15|0.15|0.5 Totals|30|35.74|100

Strength: 3mg/ml

PG/VG: 30/70

Flavor total: 2 ml (6.7%)

I've got everything except the AP and RY4... I'll give it a go if I can find some subs... any suggestions?

Hmm.. those are probably the two most critical ingredients. It won't be the same but you could probably double the caramel and use maybe FA Mixed Nuts or something similar for AP

I've actually started making two different flavored juices that compliment each other, but are different.

I will make a peach flavor around 8% and a Hawaiian punch flavor around 10% (some flavors need more % to taste better)

I will switch between these two flavors throughout the day back and forth that way neither flavor gets "muted."

Want to switch it up? Make a tropical fruit blend and a watermelon candy blend. As long as they both can work together to make an overall flavor when combined, it seems to work for me.

Doing this in a tank would definitely be a little more challenging. Maybe fill halfway with one, when it is almost out, fill back up with the other?

The sky is the limit with DIY.

I've found that really good oral hygiene has greatly improved my tasting. Brush your teeth well and floss, but the most important part is to scrape your tongue! My tongue is always white, and I think that is bacteria and such. I noticed when I use a tongue scraper, I can taste everything significantly better. This is all anecdotal, but maybe it will help!

Are you using a dripper or a tank? How long does it take for you to not taste the flavors?

He's using an aqua v2 and it goes within a day.

I think in this case is related to your palette. If it doesn't go in a tank then it probably isn't the juice. My recommendation would be to have a couple different flavors to switch between when you get worn out on one

Yea I have a large rotation of juices on the go to stop myself getting bored but I always go back to my old faithful tobacco juice :)

I get the same. I haven't found a real way of stopping it. Try the usual method of sticking your nose in a jar of coffee and taking a few good sniffs to reset your sense of smell, also I switch to menthol flavour to reset myself too. Maybe try a thinner wick in your coil, I find that helps with long term flavour.

Good luck and let me know how you get on

What brand of flavoring are you using? What types of flavors? Do you keep yourself well hydrated?

I use INW, FA, TFA, CAP, FW... when I started, I tried to hit the 20% flavor mark with all my mixes, but I've since learned that, a lot of the times, less = more. So, my mixes are around 12 - 15% these days, if they are complex -- under 10% if they are simple. I drink bottled water throughout the day, everyday, so I'm hydrated.

damn, don't know what to tell you besides have an atomizer solely for a straight menthol flavor. I have a bottle of Strix Elixirs Frozen Tundra for this reason alone.

I'm the same way, except I vape 50/50 12mg almost exclusively though I do sub-ohm occasionally and to test for others, it's not my ideal vape. So even 15% flavor with 50/50 is insane for me. I didn't think it was at first, then I wondered why all my juices smell & taste reallllllly good at first, then are just a muddled mess of flavor 2 weeks in. Especially with FA, their flavors are very strong and like most flavors, less=more.

The ONLY thing to help my vapers tongue is to constantly vape different flavors. I can't vape a flavor more than an hour before it dies off. And being a mixer my palate needs to be sharp at all times. So in between tastings I drip other juices to keep from my olfactory senses from tiring out. A menthol flavor works wonders. After vaping a menthol, the next pull off the taster is the most true. Then from there I have about 20 minutes of tasting time before I have to "reset". This is an issue I'll be talking about soon on my show, and will have an in depth view of why this happens and how to best stay equipped against it. Hope this helps.
