Im having some trouble figuring out how to work with this flavour and would like some advice.
The first thing i did when I got it was make a 5% dilution in VG and steep; after 2 days it was awful; 2 weeks and its not much better; a very strong bitter caramel taste comes through. I also steeped some TFA pie crust the same way, it was completely unbearable on its own after 2 days, but after 2 weeks I can tell what sort of things to mix it with to work around its baseline flavour. However with the butterscotch Im still not convinced I can work with it.
The next thing I did was dilute my mix down 5X into some kind of cookie recipe (something like 2% FA cookie, 5% TFA white chocolate (love this stuff) and 1% CAP vanilla). After a few days steeping the taste has got better but even at this dilution (now 1%) it was coming through as a powerful base of burnt caramel.
2 days ago I then diluted this entire cookie mixture out by 2 into 10% TFA Bavarian cream (totalling 5% bavarian cream) with a few extra drops of FA cookie and a drop of AP (I have no reason for adding it, Im just a little obsessed with it).
So now at 0.5% butterscotch in a mix dominated by other flavours there is still an overpowering burned caramel taste; its much better than before but still ruining my recipe.
I have looked at how others are using this flavour and the majority seem to go for anywhere between 2-10%; do I have a defective batch? Do i just not like this flavour? Should I try sweeteners (TFA marshmallow, cotton candy, brown sugar double) or some additives?
Any advice is very much appreciated as always.

I haven't worked with tfa butterscotch myself, but have you tried airing it out overnight?
Other than that I'm stumped for ideas when you've already gone down to 0.5%. You might ha e a faulty bottle, contact your supplier or the manufacturer and see if they'll hear you out, maybe give you some pointers.
Yeah it was stepped topless for a few days, even heat steeped for a few hours at one point, but no change. Im not sure its the steeping thats the problem anymore, but rather a faulty batch like you said.
I wont be contacting the company though as I have had enough headaches with them to even bother adding more complaints. I will just write this one off as a learning experience and try other flavours.

Your best bet is to change Butterscotch manufacturers. I find TFAs to be quite bad compared to FA or FW. I would give the edge to FlavorWest's Butterscotch as being the best I've tried.
You may want to try Caramel instead of Butterscotch if you don't want a dominating flavor. Overall, Caramel just plays well with others. You could also mix caramel and butterscotch as well
I have actually noticed this myself. Im relatively new to DIY and so I have been trying a range of companies for their flavours; I leaned heavily on TFA due to the praise they receive from other people, but honestly my favourite flavours so far have all come from CAP and FW. I know its all subjective and only ploughing more cash into more flavours will get me the answers i want. but I will definitely be trying more FW flavours and maybe even some others.
TFA Butterscotch by itself just isn't that great. I am working on a butterscotch pudding and use a mix of butterscotch flavors. I'll post the recipe I have atm even though it's still wip.

What OHM/Wattage are you running at? 90% this is the problem. Anytime I've fired up Butterscotch over ~40watts or so it tastes extremely burnt.
Butterscotch has been one of my primary ADVs since I started vaping. I like TFA's best at 15%. I tried FW and found it really buttery but good. So I mix the two 50/50 and do it at 15% Keep in mind I'm vaping it in single coil protank variants. I tried dripping it and yes, it's too strong at that ratio but I love the flavor. I can't say why it doesn't work for you, everybody's different.
