It is simply a 3mm stainless steel rod used for rc helicopters chucked into a dremel and run on full speed.

I've tested all kinds of mixers and this thing is a beast. If you can find a hobby shop that sells them individually, you should be able to get one for less than a dollar. I've only tested it on a 30ml bottle so far, but it should have no problem doing much larger batches as well. The juice was room temp too.

Why don't you use a clean/new drill bit. It will create more turbulence.

Not a bad idea... found one long enough on Amazon for under $10.

I've never spun a drill bit at 10k-20k rpm's though, might be a bit sketchy with glass.

Sketchier with plastic

Make sure to wash all the tool oil off of it first!

I picked up a 3mm rod today to try this and I got a threaded one too. Thought it might have a similar effect to a bit

Put tape around top inch. Electrical tape. It's stretchy and wouldn't take much. But you're not going to do anything to that glass unless it's a carbide tip masonry bit or a diamond coated tip for glass/ceramic.

I thought about that too. You're right, but it would also probably send the juice flying out of the container.

Just run the bit in reverse, or get a reverse threaded bit if you can't.

Dremels have adjustable speeds.

If you have an old cd/dvd drive the guide rails for the laser are 3mm stainless as well, usually 80 - 90mm long and should work nicely up to a 60mil bottle. Just make sure you clean them well before use :P

Found an old dremel in the garage I had forgotten about. Just took a long finish nail and tested it out. Works like a charm, thanks for posting.

Have you notice any flavor reduction from introducing so much air into the liquid?

by bmilcsabout 10 years ago

This is great. I've been struggling with my 450-500ml mixes and this should do the trick. In the cart it goes.

Nice! Gonna have to look into that

I need one of these. My wrists hurt from shaking bottles all day. Next week...yes grins

Can you let this thing spin for a couple hours without worrying about the emulsion foaming over?

by LukeGabout 10 years ago

You thinking of mounting the dremel in a stand? I don't have a way to test that. In a larger container I think you would be fine though.

Yes. I might have to go buy a few cheap 12v dc motors and try this out.

Ohhhh.... that is interesting! If you scuffed the rod up with some 40 grit sandpaper it would probably work even better.

Why not go to a DIY magnetic plate stirrer at that point? I'm in the process of building one like this. But you could skip the heating element and do something like this.

Here's my setup. Perfect fit with 50ml conical vials http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00Q4O5MY0/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I was looking at those but had concerns about how well they would hold to VG mixing abuse. How long have you been using yours?

I mix max vg and I have been using mine for about 2-3 months. I mix atleast 150ml a week. It is still as good as day1

> Yup same here. Picked one up back in in January. Fresh rechargeable and good to go with the vg.

Noob question as I keep seeing these things. Does this speed up the length of time required to steep? Or is this simply to mix so that you don't have to shake ?

by playin0about 10 years ago

it depends on what flavors you're mixing. This process works well for me with fruit flavors. I can mix up some nana cream and its good to go after a good mixing.

Awesome. Thanks. I just started and doing simple 1-2 flavors together. And they're all fruit .

Off to buy a dremel.

I used to use my dremel with a long piece of 20g kanthal wire and just made a "ball" at the end of it with twisted up 32g wire. I liked the method but it just gets way too much air in the juice and my nic was oxidizing. Killed the flavor for it as well, at least with my experience

Mixing is a harsh mistress. Too much or too little will mute the flavour. I use a milk frother, which might have the same torque. Often I've overdone it.

I was just browsing TOP for this subreddit, and given the nature of metal, I thought a precision plastic alternative would be... cool

Just a warning, dremels spin fast and I have found a lot of materials will not hold up well and shatter or distort. At 5k+ rpm's that gets ugly real quick! BE CAREFUL!

I have plastic 3d printed mixing rods I use with a drill that work great.

Just don't touch the glass... unless you like vaping silicate.

by CorruptingAcidabout 10 years ago

Even if you did get glass in the juice the wick should filter it out before it hits the coil.

Edit: Also the glass wouldn't melt at the heat the coil runs at. So really no way to vape it accidentally.

>Glass can only be molded at very high temperatures. It completely melts/liquifies at approximately 1400 °C to 1600 °C depending on the composition of glass. Glass is made from a variety of substances, depending on the intent of use. Mostly sand, lime and soda are what most glasses are made of.

I think you'd be ok. You know, besides having a broken bottle.

The rod is completely smooth. I bumped the glass a few times playing around with it and there is no noticeable marks where the rod touched. I think you would crack the glass and break the bottle before you got it to scuff the glass and remove any material.
