Flavor substitute table
submitted over 10 years ago by CryptoVaper

Has anyone compiled a comprehensive flavor substitute table? I come across recipes calling for one ingredient I don't have like "CAP Sweet Strawberry" and wonder if I could use "TFA Strawberry" or "TFA Strawberry Ripe" instead. Or "FA Vienna Cream" and I have "TFA Sweet Cream" and "TFA Bavarian Cream", etc. There are too many flavors and too many manufacturers to own them all.

i really like this idea. I usually just grab ass it with varying results. Would be nice if there was a place to document your experience with a substitution for the common good. One of the biggest problems I usually have is TFA or CAP for FA. I usually use an extra 50% over the FA amount to start with and adjust from there.

That's part of what I'd like to see, not only the flavor (or combinations of flavors) you can substitute, but the percentage increase/decrease that needs to be applied.

I like a combination of TFA's strawberry ripe and regular strawberry. There are a lot of flavors but that is what makes DIY fun! Playing with substitutions and altering other peoples recipe is my favorite part.

I think sweet strawberry and strawberry ripe could be interchanged. They have different tastes but both are sweet strawberry flavors and fairly similar.

I've never had sweet cream but I've assumed it's similar to FA fresh cream but I could be way off. Sweet cream has been out of stock every time I've ordered flavors lol.

FA Strawberry is similar to TPA Strawberry as well but considerably more concentrated. I don't know about the CAP.

FA freash cream and TFA sweet cream are not even close to the same. Sweet cream has a sweet sour milk taste and fresh cream taste like cream with no sweetness at all.

Agreed- Those are very different flavors. FA Creams are fairly unique in their subtlety. FA Vienna Cream and TPA Bavarian cream for example- similar in concept, but Bavarian cream is sweeter airy; More like canned vanilla whip cream, and the Vienna cream is more heavy whipping cream with a hint of vanilla.

This needs to happen.

There's really only a couple flavors you can swap out imo. You can swap out TFA Strawberry with CAP Sweet Strawberry, but not TFA Strawberry Ripe. You can swap out FA Meringue for FA Fresh Cream, but it's not going to be the same, obviously. You can swap out TFA Fruit Circles for Pledge Cleaner, because it's the exact same flavor. And you can swap out FA Cookie for INW Bisket, but it turns it into a wafer kinda. I'm sure there are more.

Swap away, don't have X go ahead and try Y it may be as good or better, experiment. Jesus this isn't rocket surgery. Too many people feel they are doing it wrong if they do not do what the maniacs do.

Every site is like this. A few maniac engineer perfectionists carry on about how as an example Nana Cream clone is not perfect... the clones are very fucking good in their own right. But now they have put doubt into the minds of all those who are not maniac perfectionists. Have fun and relax. If you make a recipe and its good then fuck it, it's good!

BTW I am an engineer, so STFU before you start.

So, you're an engineer saying "this isn't rocket SURGERY"? I agree with your post to some extent but if a recipe calls for a certain flavour by a certain manufacturer, it might not always be possible to substitute but if it is, it's nice to know. Almost all recipe posts has a few comments regarding substituting so it might not be a bad idea.

Yea rocket surgery, it's not. You guys are more concerned with replication than making something new.

Nah, it's more like rocket SCIENCE. I guess this is like pretty much everything else, if you don't have any use for it, don't use it.
