I've now made my second batch, still.. Stuff tastes extremely muted and flavorful
submitted over 10 years ago by Secretcdsarah

I mixed another 8 bottles of juice to my previous 8 and I seriously don't get it. I'm barely getting any flavor and the flavors I'm getting aren't tasty at all. I will list all my flavors below, hopefully somebody will be able to put a spot on this.

here are two master lists that might help with some of the percentages

The main thing when you're mixing is to try different versions of the same one and take notes every few days. I made this Chai with Horehound that was awesome the first day, not so good the second, and really good after that. I've found that different flavors take different times to settle into place.

ninja edit: You might also want to check out The Flavor Bible: The Essential Guide to Culinary Creativity by Karen Page and Andrew Dornenburg. It has a massive list of flavors that pair well together. There's more to it than just this list, but it's a great place to start.

Steeping man. Steeping is the bane of all of us. We take hours thinking of a recipe, getting it ready, mixing it up, and we produce this DELICIOUSLY smelling juice...and now we have to wait. I recommend at LEAST a week before truly tasting anything and taking notes. You could do a few things to help the steep, like shaking or heating, but you still have to let it sit. What it's doing is saturating that VG to where it's turning the VG into a flavoring in itself, which gives you that full sweet flavor. The reason the premium juices taste so "ripe" is because they sit forever, they sit in inventory, they sit in trucks, they sit on shelves, all before you crack it open. Don't mix something and taste it right after and expect it to be the same a week from then, it'll be totally different. To make a great shake and vape just takes time to learn to make. I have a few flavors I mix up that I know taste great from the start, but after a few weeks taste much better.

you are using under 10% flavorings in max VG juice. You either need to up your flavor % or steep for a long long time.

I'm usually between 15-20% flavoring on 20/80 and 30/70 blends.

That would be true if he used not very concentrated flavors like TPA or Flavor West - He's not. The ones I looked at had Flavour Art, Inawera and Flavorah.

Higher percentages will likely dull the flavor (overflavoring).

I use max VG and a lot of my recipes are 4-6% total, and they're plenty flavorful.

Something else to keep in mind is that most commercial juices are way overflavored hence a frequent chemical taste or unbalancedness to them. It may also take your palate a short while to adjust to properly flavored eliquids.

Let me get some clarification on this because i thought i was doing this right but maybe thats been my problem all along. Making 80/20 batches i should not be counting the pg in the flavorings as that 20? I should have an 80/20 base then flavorings?

Wait what?

I think I understand.

If your flavorings are PG, they could towards your PG total.

If your flavorings are VG (rare, but can be), they count towards your VG total.

Same with nic.
