I've been watching all your videos as you've been making them, and now I have to encourage you to continue - they are very insightful. You're now the go to source for PVs and DIY, simply because of how thorough and concise you've been.
Very often you confirm what I've suspected happened to my liquids, through painful trial and error, such as over mixing causing muting flavours.
Weighing had been recommended here, but I needed this video to convince me. I'm buying a scale.
Thanks.
Great video. I loved your other videos too; they were part of what pushed me off the edge into the rabbit hole.
The only criticism I'd make is that the weight math is... I mean, I love algebra, and I can see the appeal of putting it in generally. (People should know at least that much if they're going to mix by weight.) But due to a combination of reasons, I'd say it might have been just as well to leave it out: (a) different PG flavors actually have different weights, e.g., (b) calculating the specific weight of each flavoring would be highly inconvenient in itself, and (c) there's the convention (at least around these parts) of assuming all PG flavors weigh 1g/ml.
I was really unsure about doing that whole portion. Originally I was just going to use the conversions on this sub and just call it a day, but I figured I might as well try to show it visually to back it up. But that definitely gets more problematic with every flavor having different weights and such. Looking back I should have implied that PG weight could be rounded down to zero, maybe a non invasive annotation at the bottom could work.
I definitely think you made the right call to include, and as it is now I think its a fantastic explanation for "how/why does this measurement translate into this weight". I also agree though that a little annotation after the fact could put people at ease if a lot of it starts flying over their heads. :)
And if you do go that way, throw another one up reminding to shake that nic base!
Overall though, seriously awesome video.
Great videos, I just watched both of your tutorials. As someone who is much more of a visual learner, you just made mixing DIY juice seem easy as pie for me. I think I am finally going to get my feet wet here in a paycheck or two.
I must say, mixing by weight always seemed more complicated than by volume. After watching both vids, weight is the way I will go.
Ok I'm convinced to switch to mixing by weight, I checked the link in the video to the scale on Amazon and it's like ~$28 and measures up to 500g, then I checked the other weight options and there's one that measures up to 1000g and is a dollar less and one that measures up to 3000g that's a couple dollars more. Is there a reason why they are all priced about the same but can measure drastically different weights? Are the ones that can measure 1000 or 3000g a lot less accurate or something?
Thank you for this. I think I'm spending a couple hundred here soon. With flavors, about how much are you in?
Oh boy...maybe at least $100 on flavors alone, but it's been a large variety and many in large sizes. When I first started it was a lot of random flavors in small 4mL sizes, and random experimenting. I've since then found flavors I really enjoy and bought much larger sizes. TFA offers good bulk sizes, but there are many other vendors out there that are just as good.
Your reading my mind. Browsing TFA now; what do you currently have in large bottles, besides vanilla cupcake ;)
Anyone go an opinion on his mix method? On not gonna buy a UC but if I can just buy a clamp for a couple bucks I might as well. I am so thankful this video came out though. After reading forever I was pretty sure I had this method figured out, now I gotto confirm it before my flavours even came in!
i tried the clamp method. the clamp i got was not symmetrical about the rotational axis, so it put a strain on my drill motor (which emitted an ozone smell so I quit it.) if you do that go slow so's to make it like a tumbler rather than a centrifuge. also check the last week of posts, there's one where someone made an analogous rig and the comments in it might be helpful to you.
Alright, I really appreciate taking the time to give me your 2 cents. As per usual, I'm am about to fall asleep staring at my phone while scouring through the DIY posts, so I'll check the posts tomorrow. Once again, thank you!
Honestly I do it slow, and not in super hyper speeds. It seems to work pretty okay for what it is. I've been making larger batches in general, like 4oz and up so I've been using my milk frothers and just pouring them into bottles. The clamp is a nifty method, but don't burn out your drill!
already I'll keep a slower pace, and the milk frother sounds awesome for larger batches! I can't wait till I make something I love enough to have 4oz! And don't worry, I have a DeWalt, if it breaks I get a new one free! But I shouldn't break it, I'm very familiar with power tools.
I cant see the video, I have noticed I cant see any vids here Why?
Had the same problem; try HTML5, by adding &html5=1 to the URL. link for the lazy :)
Hm, am I sharing the wrong URL? Do a lot of people experience this problem?
