Bloody Mary - First actual attempt!
submitted over 10 years ago by CWinthrop

So the special flavorants finally arrived, and I started mixing away last night.

First test came close (before steeping), but was a bit too savory, so I added a tiny amount of Cucumber Mint, which helped.

It's close. Extremely close. About a 7 out of 10. It's just lacking...something. And no, I can't find a celery flavorant anywhere, but the Cucumber Mint adds that hint of "green" the celery would add, so that's not it.

Bloody Mary 5ml batch, 50/50, 0mg Nic

PG - 0.9ml

VG - 2.5ml

Tomato - 0.8ml

Worchestershire - 0.35ml

Saline - 0.2ml

Jalapeno - 0.15ml

Cucumber Mint - 0.1ml

Heat steeped and rested overnight.

It's vodka. You're missing the vodka.

I've made ejuice before with 10% vodka, and everything was fine. Just make sure you use a lot of VG because vodka thins out the juice quite a lot

Possibly, but should I just add Vodka to the eJuice? And what amount?

FA has a Gin, IIRC, maybe try that? Might cover the "Alcohol" and give a bit of a botanical flavor as well.

I keep meaning to try it. But I'm afraid it'll be too botanical (dry Gin as opposed to Western Gin).

by lc_barcodeover 10 years ago

From what I've read on FA's Gin it's VERY juniper-y. So probably won't work here.

Maybe try very small at first. Say 1 or 2 drops from a pipette per 5ml. You'd be surprised how much difference such a small amount would make.

I think you should try it. Rocka Mystic puts alcohol into his flavors to give them a bit more depth, might be that bite you need.

You could try adding a few ml of clam juice to make a Caesar, or some gin flavoring for a Red Snapper.

(Pls don't vape clam juice.)

I have a vodka flavoring form FW... it is interesting.

by CWinthropover 10 years ago

I'll have to get that!

by prime1ndustriesover 10 years agoMixologist

But I would use it in an ever so small amount. This recipe is interesting... might have to snag a few extra flavors next order!

You could try making an extract from celery seed. I'd just put some celery seed in PG or VG and either let it sit a while (1 week+) or heat it in a boiling hot water bath for 20 minutes. Filter.

I don't know whether to be impressed by you, or scared of you...

Well, it is pretty impressive. And tasty! Not an ADV by any stretch, but a nice refreshing palate cleanser.

now all the sudden everyone takes you serious lol. they all thought you were crazy till now XD.

still looking forward to trying this.

i will probably be ordering the flavor for your recipe about mid next week

I know. When I first mentioned it, everyone thought I was joking, then when they realized I was serious, they thought it would taste terrible.

I'll admit, it's not exactly an ADV, but it's interesting for when you're sitting and vaping, and need a short change of pace.

Wife says it's not "sweet" enough, so I'm trying out another batch with a tiny bit of Ethyl Maltol added, and then I might try a couple of drops of Vodka, just to see how it goes.

thats awesome man. keep me updated!

by CWinthropover 10 years ago

2% Ethyl Maltol did it! It's still not 100%, but damn, it tastes almost exactly like a decent Bloody Mary!

Next step: Adding a couple of drops of actual Vodka.

In all fairness, you did post eerily close to April Fool's Day

My bloody mary mix (listed in order of percentage):

  • Tomato juice
  • Vodka
  • Worchestershire
  • Horseradish
  • Tobasco
  • Splash of olive juice
  • Black Pepper
  • Cajun seasoning
  • Celery Salt
  • Celery stalk
  • Green Olives
  • Pepperoncini
  • Cocktail onions

So, imagine what you are missing from that list in your flavors. I think the horseradish adds a different spice than jalepeno, and the black pepper adds earthy-ness and spice. Maybe try a touch of Walnut? And is there a Wasabi flavor out there? That could add a horseradish flavor at a very low percentage.

So much this.

Black pepper, celery salt (or salt), and horseradish are a must for the flavour of a proper Bloody Mary.

You need to find these flavorants:

  • Vodka (or other alcohol)
  • Horseradish
  • Black pepper

If you'd like another tongue trying this (who also happens to be obsessed with bloody marys) then I'll offer up myself. I'd be willing to pay shipping for you to send me a sample or two. I might be able to offer better suggestions after actually trying it myself.

I'd buy supplies to mix but... uhh... my gf already wants to murder me for my vape habit sometimes. Adding DIY to that would put me six feet under in no time flat.

EDIT: Removed salt as saline is that, duh Ayyno. You dummy. Added Vodka.

I'm speed steeping a test batch with a tiny bit of Vodka in it now. And I'm about to order noth Horseradish and Pepper flavorants. So far the recipe has been a proof of concept. :)

PM me an address and I'll see what I can do when I fine tune it a bit more. :)

Hmm... I'm wondering if a drop or two of Celery Bitters (http://www.kegworks.com/fee-brothers-celery-cocktail-bitters-5-oz?keyword=&matchtype=&device=c&adtype=pla&productgroup=97031494801&productid21761&gclid=CjwKEAjwjKOpBRChjsTyicbFy3QSJADP1gTNa6PEWrdCzn8bxFKS3roQXLU31CV9AaK04976-jR1ERoC-ojw_wcB) would work.

Or dry celery leaves and make an extract into some warm PG?

1 points

by CWinthropover 10 years ago

I normally use powdered celery flake in my regular Bloody Mary. Perhaps using that in PG for extraction?

It's missing dill.

If it were me, I'd try adding a hint of lime.
