TTT. Prt.2 "How to Taste, and the "Power of Taste
submitted over 10 years ago by DrMclovensThe Mad Alchemist

Welcome back guys! here we are again with Taste Testing Tips! :) if you missed Prt.1. I talked about how to cleanse the palate and gave the introduction to the series...then by all means [here you go] (http://www.reddit.com/r/DIY_eJuice/comments/30m9bm/taste_testing_tips_prt_1_cleanse_your_palate/)

Ok so you guys may have caught on by now, but its a bit of a read. 0.o

So of course, grab your drinks, snacks, and most importantly you'r vape and lets get it on!

First off,

#How To Taste

so this may be confusing to you but i want to talk about a processes that may help you with tasting your e-juice for you'r taste tests.

so in vaping, there are a LOT of variables. such as:

  • device used

  • build used

and

  • wick used

NOTE: This is all assuming you are using RBA'S/RDA'S. if you are using a clearomizer/cartomizer...Dante weeps for thee. the amount of frustration...having to empty a tank every time etc. :(

So what i find works best is to make 3 different set ups (you can do more with more variables or less with less variables depending on how meticulous you personally want to be)

my first set up will be a hot coil set up in an airy RDA.

My second is a cooler coil in a less airy RDA

and my third is warmer in a less airy RDA.

as for wicking. I always use Japanese cotton.Because 1. i love Japan and 2. it really does seem more flavorful!

as far as device used goes, well you gotta work with whatever you got right?

BTW if anyone is wondering; my RDA'S are the freakshow mini RDA for flavor, vertex v.2 for flavor, and the Little Boy for mah cloudssss

so i begin my process of tasting each batch i made. With the different set ups, and take notes on EVERYTHING. "inhale flavor, exhale flavor, how many times i can pull it in a row and get the same notes, if it is good bad or indifferent, whether or not the tweaking i did made a difference etc.) add any additional side notes you want. especially if something sticks out when tasting.

make sure you are cleansing your palate frequently during a taste testing session!!

ok this is getting jumbled lets break it down.

  • Take Notes

  • Taste in different ways to get an idea on how that juice vapes on different heat levels/wattages ect.

  • Take More Notes

  • Cleanse your Palate

  • Take a hit properly (...wait what? you didn't talk about that one! DONT TELL ME HOW TO HIT MY SHIT!!)

ok ok! sorry. I'll tell you what i mean. when tasting juice you don't want to just immediately blow it out...nor do you want to hold it in like your trying to get so high you go to mars.

i find slower pulls and slower exhales help a lot.

also a common thing in the culinary industry is to close your eyes when tasting. rely on your smell and taste buds, close your eyes and focus on trying to taste the notes, the strawberry, the kiwi, the dairy (oh sorry thats my strawberry kiwi milkshake recipe ;D)

but seriously. you may look like a jack ass doing it. but it helps. focus on the flavors you are tasting. take it slow. (You may run into a problem of being un able to pick out flavors or taste differences. this is where next weeks segment comes into play!) spoiler? leaked info? idk.

ok finally.

#The Power of Smell

fun fact. smell is 50% of your taste....or some shit like that. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

edit: its 75% :)

Ok all fun aside. I must say it is extremely important for you to smell your juice whenever tasting them. I do it before i drip each time. your brain relates it all together.

Also there is a technique to exhaling that i came up with. simple...but probably hard to write out, and have it make sense. but here we go.

so instead of exhaling directly out, i pull the vapor in my lungs and leave some remaining in my mouth. then inhale that in, using BOTH my nose and mouth simultaneously, then i hold it for a small amount of time. I then slightly let it out using both my nose and mouth, then switch to just a nose exhale for a second and THEN slowly (not extremely slowl...more like steadily) let the remaining vapor out with both nose and mouth.

#NOTE: this should all feel fluid, shouldnt feel like you are holding vapor in for extended time at any point

I find that i am slightly smelling the vapor as i taste it this way. and has been very helpful in tasting the vape.

its hard to explain but thats what i do. you almost have to see it, if you arent picking up what im laying down here haha :pp sorry!

Well Guys and Gals! I really hope that helps! I know we didnt get SUPER deep today but its still important info i feel :)

Hopefully this helps someone!

also, dont get light headed trying to get that exhale technique down ;) haha hope it made sense reading it!

Hope you guys join me next week in Prt. 3!! will be a little more fun i think, as i will be recommending some fun "excersizes" lol

and as always...Stay Vapy My Friends!!!

Hey, nice article! Pretty funny to boot Lol I do some of these already, but having several setups for testing is a great idea. In fact, I'd probably add a tank in there too. I've noticed a few juices taste remarkably different from an RDA to a tank.

Thanks for writing it, and I look forward to your next one!

Another tip for the inhale, if you press your tongue close to the roof of your mouth and the back of your teeth, it tightens the vapor and strengthens the flavor quite a bit. Kind of like sipping wine I'd say. This can also be used on the exhale to try and catch some notes you don't get on a normal exhale.
