Before vaping, I was a casual pipe smoker, so I've accumulated a pretty big collection of different tobacco blends. One thing that always bummed me out about pipe tobacco was that it always smelled amazing and complex, but when smoking it, it just tasted like tobacco with various mild undertones (I'm talking like 80% just straight tobacco taste). That was never a bad thing really, just kind of unexpected. You really have to pay attention if you wanna taste everything. Well, after making an extraction using this stuff, the PG somehow managed to capture the smokey/sweet campfire aroma of this blend and turn it into a complex flavor.
When you smoke this stuff in a pipe, the latakia gives it that strong savory smokey taste that turns some people off, mixed with the subtle sweetness of the black cavendish. It's considered a hybrid English/Aromatic blend. Aromatics smell amazing, but offer light flavor, while English blends have a very bold and strong smokey taste, but tend to smell not so great.
But when you vape this stuff... the sweetness of the Cavendish is front and center on the inhale, and the exhale is packed with that woody smokeyness, just like how a campfire smells. The best part is that it isn't overpowering at all, and every element of this juice's flavor has a bit of sweetness attached to it. On top of that, it managed to retain the aftertaste effect that the blend itself has. After vaping this stuff, the smokey sweetness will hang around in your mouth a little bit, just like how latakia tends to coat the mouth when smoking. A definite plus in my eyes.
I'm seriously tempted to buy a big ass jug of PG online, and start extracting a batch of every single pipe tobacco I own. This is blowing me away. I never thought capturing the actual aroma of a pipe tobacco was possible.
Can you share more details? How much tobacco to pg? How did you mix it ie vg / pg / flavoring ratio?
I used about half a tin of the pipe tobacco (standard 1.75oz tin), and added 50ml of PG. I then let it steep for 4 weeks. The whole process yielded about 35ml of extract. After that, I mixed 13ml PG, 13ml VG, and roughly 180-200 drops of extract.
If you had to guesstimate, how much of the total mixture do you think ended up being the flavored pg? Percentage wise please. Id really like to try making this myself but if it takes more than about 25% flavoring it may be a no go
Just wondering if you used any heat during the extraction process? Also when steeping did you just leave it in a dark place or did you use any other method?
OMG Frog Morten! That's awesome! I used to love that stuff! I also did a lot of Mac Barens. Oh, navy flake... Wow, I never even thought of pipe tobacco extraction. But a nice latakia, or oooh! even better, some perique? God, I would kill for a perique vape! I don't even vape tobaccos, but this would totally be worth trying. I've actually thought about buying a pipe again because I missed these flavors, but damn, if it works this well, then that is the ticket!
FA has a Black Perique ;p
Well, I know what I'm getting tomorrow. Haven't happened to try it have you?
Yeah, NETs are pretty amazing, if you're a pipe tobacco fan. Works well with cigars, too!
One thing to watch for: they will gunk up your coils/wicks insanely fast. I usually have to re-wick/ dry burn my RTA every 5-10 mls. For that reason, I don't vape NETs in non-rebuildable units.
But enjoy it! Letting them age a bit after extraction seems to help develop flavor as well.
What nic level did the extract come out to?
No idea, but probably kinda high. Is there a way to check?
Nicotine test kit from either wizard labs or nude nicotine.
I should try this with some Squadron Leader I have on the shelf.
Does this work equally as well with bright Virginias like Orlik Golden Sliced or Reiner Golden Label?
Awesome. I've never made any NET's but am planning on doing so once my order gets in. I'm also thinking of different NET's other than tobacco, such as tea's, orange rinds, coffee's, and nuts. Seems like a great way to get true flavor without the use of a ton of chemicals, especially after the release of the study by Dr. Farsalinos.
Good luck with that. Most of the juices I've tried that had naturally-extracted flavorings didn't taste all that great. Not terrible (mostly, anyway), but not great. Flavor was weak, and...weird. Even the better ones mostly weren't all that great, although spices seem to work better than fruit (to my tastebuds.) But I still think it's worth at least giving a shot, even if they're not all winners.
