I mixed up my first recipe using Flavorah and was immediately reminded of the yogurt flavor that I love so much in the Downside.
Let me start off by saying this: I am in no way affiliated with Flavorah or the mods here. I placed an order and paid for the whole line of flavors on my own volition. THESE FLAVORS ARE THE BEES KNEES, BELIEVE THE HYPE.
Now that that's out of the way, I made the terrible mistake (or so I thought, at first) of using 1% FLV Coconut in my recipe. It was overbearing, and I was sad. Here's the recipe:
4% FLV Vanilla Custard 3% FLV Blueberry Muffin 1% FLV Coconut
The next morning I woke up and vaped my creation (after forcing coconut-filled nightmares out of my head - yes, these flavors are that strong) and was met with a juice that I can only describe as yogurt. That slightly tangy, sweet, creamy goodness that is yogurt.
Yes, the coconut is still very strong when I focus on it, and the aftertaste is almost entirely coconut, BUT the inhale is yogurt. The blueberry muffin adds a calm blueberry and subtle bready granola-like note to the mix. Pretty close to those Special K Blueberry Yogurt bars that everyone's mom used to keep in the cabinet. The Vanilla Custard is just perfect. It's the ideal.
This is the most complex tasting juice I've ever made. It's also the least amount of ingredients I've ever put into a recipe that I fell in love with.
I plan on taking the coconut down a bit, maybe to .5%, but I think the effect it has at the higher percentage is what's really adding that tart yogurt flavor. Maybe I'll drop down everything else a little bit (3% Vanilla Custard, 2% Blueberry Muffin) so the ratio of coconut to everything else stays closer to the current mix while effectively halving the amount of Coconut in the recipe. Bad math, I know, but you get the idea.
TL;DR Believe the Flavorah hype, yogurt is awesome, FLV Coconut is really fucking strong
When I mixed Coconut with VC, I found that 0.5% was the sweet spot for me personally. Here's a recipe I made using VC and Coconut a few days ago that you may want to mess with.
Very interesting addition of Blueberry Muffin, I will have to try this tonight!
/agree with that, even at just 0.5% it's super present and in my very first experiment I started at 1% and worked downward to 0.4% before I was happy that it didn't overpower and just gave off 'creamy' for me. I, for one, welcome our new yogurt overlords. If this works consistently, it will be amazing.
Still need my damn FA Jamaican Rum to show up (was planning to sub TFA French Vanilla Deluxe for the CAP FV), but I swear I'm gonna try this because it's a killer sounding mix, especially with the options you listed. I'm convinced Flue-Cured is a panacea for ejiuice. I want it in my EVERYTHING. It's so fucking good. I'm not sure why I'd be surprised, after all, this is Mother Murphy's we're talking about -- the gods of tobacco flavorists. I can't match the taste of FLV tobaccos with ANYTHING else I've ever tried. Even my NN Tobacco absolute-based juices pale in comparison.
Yeah the Cured Tobacco has a really nice taste to it. I find myself just throwing in a couple of drops in a juice when my taste buds are shot.
BTW, you can make the juice without the Jamaican Rum as it's more of a topping than anything. I always like to think of FA ingredients that way -- to be optionally enjoyed in the 0.5 - 1.0% range.
I've never tried TFA French Vanilla Deluxe as I kept finding that I preferred CAP over TFA regarding those bakery type ingredients. Let me know how it works out!
I may give it a shot then. As far as CAP vs. TFA, I had a bit of a different progression in my juicemaking -- I started with TFA about a year ago as most people did, mixing fruits and creams, then when I wanted to get into bakery, I ordered a bunch of FA to use as I described in my "make ejuice from any recipe" posting. I have about 25 CAP flavors but honestly, they're like FW for me -- I only use them if there's a specific reason to, like CAP VC or FW Yellow Cake. I find that TFA and FA cover most of my needs for candy-like and realistic ingredients, and I've been branching out to more unique options like Medicine Flower rather than buying more dilute flavorings in PG from other companies (Flavorah obviously excepted, very happy I took a chance on them!).
I'll give the juice a shot without the Jamaican Rum, but I imagine it'll be missing a certain something. I think accent notes are pretty crucial, though obviously I can tell if I like a base recipe without it.
Interesting. The flavors tend to be a bit lactone heavy so "yogurt" makes sense.
I'll add a note in my Coconut Tasting Note post. Thanks!
Thanks for doing your notes, rr&s. I noticed something milky, creamy, mellow about almost all the FLV flavors I have tried (14). I wonder if this "lactone" element is what ties them together--something sure does. I'm not familiar with the word/quality/chemical compound, so I looked here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aroma_compound#Lactones but it didn't give me much info. Maybe you could say a bit more about what you mean when you use "lactone heavy" as a descriptor?
I mixed all single flavors at 1.5 - 5.5% for tasting (guessing for each based on various factors) and I have a feeling I over or undershot most of them, because I'm not really grokking all the excitement about them I'm reading here in this sub. edit: Or maybe it's all about mixing with FLV?
PS: I posted my own brief first impressions on VU in the Flavorah thread there. Here is the link: http://www.vapingunderground.com/threads/flavorah.59634/page-2#post-402018
Thanks for the comment!. Lactones often lend a ripe, rich, fattiness to fruit flavors. Here are some lactone-links. Click on the "Organoleptics" header for each page and you'll see what flavor & fragrances each one contributes. GoodScentsCo site looks like it was made for Geocities (c.1994) but it most definitely rocks if you're interested in what a particular flavor molecule does.
This is great--thanks for the links. Geocities, oh yeah... I remember. I was hanging out on IRC EFnet about that time. I would definitely describe every FLV fruit flavor I've tried as "ripe, rich, fatty" (with the possible exception of Tropical Punch). I've also found in my limited mixing that it's pretty much impossible to make an offensive flavor combination. And as i said elsewhere, I'm not sure I like this quality. Most of my experience is with FA and TFA, and though I haven't tried mixing FLV much with other brands, I have the feeling it's going to be necessary to give a finished mix some sparkle and depth. For me, it's hard to find the FLV flavors in all that milky smoothness.
What^device^and^wattage^are^you^vaping?
Seriously though, we have to start mandating that this be included with flavor/recipe descriptions. I'm really interested in trying this! Thanks for the info.
1.0 ohm dual coil 28awg kanthal A1 (12 wraps around a 2.4mm bit) in an authentic Derringer with one air hole open on each side running on an rDNA 40 set at 26.5 watts (obviously not using temperature control because kanthal). Using Vaper's Choice PEMA Cotton as the wicking material.
The Derringer has the SS cap and gold center post. White Derringer drip tip. My shark is wearing the white skin so it looks like a tuxedo. Battery is about 85% full. Speaking of the battery, it's a Samsung 25r with about 30 cycles on it.
Thanks for going above and beyond. Now if we could convince everyone to give such an accurate description of their setup, we might get somewhere. Flavors really tend to change over different power outputs and different atomizers.
AP might taste to you like nuts out of your 2.1 ohm clearomizer, but out of the Derringer, at 50+ watts it tastes like perfectly burnt popcorn.
I love FLV, but I haven't mixed with the blueberry muffin yet. I'm excited to see where you go with this, I think there's definite potential here! Really cool idea man.
thanks! it's awesome, after a few days it's becoming more bready and the blueberry is mellowing out a bit, I can imagine that there's a sweet spot to combine this FLV Blueberry Muffin with FLV Blueberry (which I don't have) that will make it really pop
So do you guys think that using FLV would be an acceptable replacement for TFA coconut or is it a completely different flavor profile? To my understanding TFA Coconut and coconut extra is more to enhance other flavors rather than taste like coconut. I'm thinking of modifying the Snake Oil base (TFA Pear, TFA Coconut Extra and TFA Bavarian Cream.) Any thoughts?
As long as you are under 1% FLV Coconut, then yes. It's a different flavor though. You should make a small batch of that Snake Oil Base using FLV and report back!
