A Moment For a EXTREMELY Missed Friend/Teacher
submitted over 10 years ago by DrMclovensThe Mad Alchemist

IDK if it was from taking offense to "the scientist" or if it was just fed up with trolls or what but i don't do investigative work in personal matters as such. However I am very VERY saddened by the result of the situation, whatever it may have been.

So to you, practically my former teacher, all of our former info bank, well respected DIY'r by any DIY'r worth their salt.

To you, the man i will miss the most on this sub.

To you, who's opinion i respect greatly

to you who helped so many newbs, and dedicated endless hours to helping the less informed (however bluntly you may have spoke the truth to them, including myself)

To you who i bumped heads with at first, then greatly respected. Farewell pal. I hope you find it fit to come back to us.

none the less, this is the internet. and there will always be the ass holes to ruin something nice.

To you, whom most of you have guessed, and i practically viewed as a teacher,

Farewell

/u/abdada

edit, if i had any part in your decision to leave, I am terribly sorry and i assure you, my intentions were misunderstood

Not to start drama here but the other day I went to look through his post history to try and find a certain Deeper DIY post he had made. I saw he posts to some certain subs that I absolutely despise and spend a lot of time hating on.

For the first time ever I didn't really care. I still consider him a cool guy with a big brain. And he's way braver than anyone I've seen. Dude bought pure acetoin to try in a recipe! Crazy.

So /u/abdada, I may not share your personal views on many things but I still majorly appreciate all that you brought to the table here. Cheers man, sorry to see you go. I'll definitely be watching the Deeper DIY sub for any new info you share.

That's the brilliance of being an intellectual and an evolved human being. Someone may believe in things I find absolutely absurd and obnoxious, but if they are a decent human being and they can defend their beliefs with rational discourse without devolving to petty argumentativeness, we can still be friends. A lot of my good friends have widely different beliefs and values to me, but their open-mindedness and sense of humor makes our diversity and disagreements a strength of our relationship and enriches all of our lives.

I value people not for what they believe but for how they think and how they live. Unfortunately, I think it's exactly the fact that most people are not self-assured and confident enough to live like this that led to the drama which caused him to leave.

Edit: Upvoted you because this thread as a whole is unsurprisingly a downvote magnet.

Did you happen to look at his post history? I thought to look after it was just mentioned and he looks like he is pretty active being cruel on /r/Fatpeoplehate. I found him very helpful but he had an awful lot of eye rolling posts as well. If he wants to take his ball and go home then that's his choice, is there really any need for a melodramatic thread about his leaving?

Holy crap, he is a Redpiller, too. Gross.

> Holy crap, he is a Redpiller, too. Gross

Considering TRP has over 100k subscribers now, chances are good that he may not be the only one that posts to this sub. Wrap your brain around that.

Yeah, I've looked at his post history. Did you happen to read a single word of my post you replied to? I rolled my eyes too sometimes, and I don't agree with everything he likes/does/thinks, but that's got exactly nothing to do with anything over relevance.

I didn't make the thread, and I wouldn't have (and he wouldn't have wanted it), but I've got no issue offering my opinions in it, nor do I have a problem with it being posted here.

I'm a sigma redpiller, not an alpha.

Ive been temp banned from every red pill subreddit more than once because I generally write to attract sigmas abd warn then not to try being alphas.

Sigmas = lone wolfs, intellectuals.

Even in TRP forums, my swagger gets me kicked out, lol.

I made the thread. and the reason being. if he is an asshole, scumbag, dick face "insert insult + insult +insult here" or if he isn't on other threads. i could give two flying fucks less.

bottom line, he was a great contributor here. and its a damn shame this community is what drove him out.

that's my take on it.

but good luck to ya /u/abdada

i appreciated your help buddy.

Oh as for FPH, I was once obese. It took a shit ton of shaming by my doctor to make me realize it was my fault.

From the FPH forums I have met more than a dozen fatties who know me. They browsed there. They asked why I am so vile.

Here's why: the ACA. Now that I am fscking paying for your fat ass to shove Cheetos in your pie hole all day, I am going to speak out.

My past obesity was my fault. I fixed it. I am not paying for your obesity.

My health insurance went from $68 a month to $450 after ACA. Haven't filed a claim in 20 years. Total bullshit.

"This thread as a whole was a down vote magnet"

HAHA come on man, of course it was. I posted it. I'm a doe voteagnet for some god given reason. Idk. Doesn't bother me though :)

PS. How do I do that thingy that lets you quote what someone else said

1 points

by returnityover 10 years agoArmchair Flavorist

To quote someone, put a "greater than symbol" (SHIFT+.) and then a space, then paste their quote there. Feel free to try it in a reply to this comment. If (on desktop) you highlight some text in a post, and then hit the reply button, reddit does the markdown automatically for you. You can also check out the Reddit Markdown Primer for a complete crash course in how to do anything your heart desires on reddit (except bring back Adam, I can't find that section).

P.S. If I had to guess why the downvoters love you, it's probably something to do with your spelling/typing =P

In some of those awful forums I do spend a lot of time helping folks out, too.

Appreciate the support. And I appreciate all opinions, even haters. Heck, I took the advice of haters.

2 points

by DrMclovensover 10 years ago

Hey bud. If that advise from the haters was to part ways from this sub. It was bad advice :(

Random question: I see you in Keto, which I've been circling the borders of for a while now. You have any experience with Soylent? Seems right up your alley, and I'm on the verge of jumping in with both feet.

3 points

by captaincannibalover 10 years ago

Not him but check out /r/soylent. I had some experience with Soylent alternatives. Pretty cool stuff.

0 points

by abdadaover 10 years ago

I don't do PUFAs and last I saw that was the main fat in soylent.

KetoSoy is better (no soy in it) -- SFAs instead of PUFAs.

I was thinking about making a thread like this for the past day or two. The guy is chock full of knowledge.. and as long as you do 50% of the research yourself he was glad to help out.

I think my first post.. which was "blahblah cheap clone recipe.. order the shit for me" he gave me shit.. then afterwards helped a ridiculous amount anytime I needed.

It's a shame people like /u/soad2237 and other toxic members have a single goal of pushing helpful members who explore DIY further then just.. "Add cap custard and any fruit flavor"

This is to you /u/abdada and from everyone here who has appreciated your help from the get-go! Thank you mate.

Don't you think it's a little bit toxic to keep stoking the flames?

5 points

by BooksofMagicover 10 years agoMixologist

You're not one to talk about stoking the flames

> I'm not here to one-up you pieces of shit. Just to get rid of you so that the rest of the sub will not feel bad about speaking up and asking questions.

I think I've already made it clear, but I too have a huge amount of respect for him, and while I won't be losing contact with him or discontinuing my collaboration with him, I'm still sad to see him leave this subreddit. His reasons were clear and his rationale was logical, I won't fault him that, but I still don't necessarily agree with the decision.

He did more than any other single person to help people with questions who wanted to learn. He shared his work and research openly and freely, spending money many of us don't have to further the DIY cause. He would tell you exactly what he was thinking and what you were doing right (or wrong).

I appreciated everything you did for this community, and I know the other places you've moved on to sharing your wealth (of knowledge and opinions =P) will be much richer for it.

Edit: In honor of the late, great man himself: Feed me your downvotes, haters! Your tears sustain me!

absolutely man. I think the guys was fantastic. sad to see him go. sadder to see it be because of people in this community...i think.

I honestly don't know why he left as you do. And i won't be asking you. If he wanted me to know he would have told me. i respect the man and his privacy. if he decided to tell me i would be all ears. but i won't go lurking on his page to come up with self perceived analysis and possible incorrect guesses.

I already have enough possibilities in my head LOL.

but mainly. /u/abdada I wanted you to know. i appreciated you man :) a lot!

:o anyone care to explain to me what happened to /u/abdada ? What led up to him being banned?(or w/e may keep him from the sub.)

6 points

by captaincannibalover 10 years ago

He got really irritated about people never reading the sidebar and got in some arguments on a thread where the OP clearly didn't read the sidebar. His leaving is his choice.

5 points

by returnityover 10 years agoArmchair Flavorist

More accurately explained than other posters, as someone a little closer to the situation: A certain sect of members (many who never post or contribute) were downvoting a lot of his posts (helpful and sarcastic ones alike), and it all came to head in the conversation I linked to in my OP in my "Are you afriad to post here?" thread (currently stickied at the top of the sub). As a result of that exchange, he simultaneously received a significant amount of hatemail and rancor via PM, and he made a decision that the amount of effort and time he was pouring into this subreddit was a losing proposition for him based on the decreasing returns he was seeing for his efforts, and rather than compromise himself and act inauthentically, he chose to step aside and go elsewhere that his contributions and personality would be more fairly valued.

2 points

by skiddlzninjaover 10 years agoFrugivore

So people that only come to the subreddit to take recipes without contributing anything creative decided that one of the biggest contributors should be serially downvoted. And /u/abdada ain't havin' none of that shit, so he peaced out?

Basically everything that's wrong with this subreddit pushed away the best* contributor to the subreddit?

2 points

by clinodevover 10 years agoVanillinist

There are a number of excellent contributors who were active 6 months ago that I never see anymore. He's the topic of the moment, but it's been a long process of great people moving on. Thank goodness for reddit search, such as it is.

He wasn't band. He left brotha. I'm guessing he got tired of trolls/haters/etc. here. People took him for granite I suppose.

Again I dont KNOW that's the reason

5 points

by RathkampDrumsover 10 years ago

Well...as long as they didn't take him for limestone.

They took him for granite cause he's hard as fuck. Dat swagger, y0.

by returnityover 10 years agoArmchair Flavorist

I don't know if he qualifies as nice per se, lol, but he was a huge asset to the community and I truly enjoy conversing with him.

3 points

by PM_Me_Your_Clonesover 10 years ago

I actually found him perfectly amenable in all of the few conversations that we had. I only saw him spit real venom at people who I also felt probably warranted it. We've all got limits and we all work together under certain conditions, his limits are a bit lower and his conditions a bit stricter than mine (and his knowledge much more broad) but I could see myself in the same situation.

2 points

by returnityover 10 years agoArmchair Flavorist

He's never been anything but friendly and civil to me, and we talk regularly. However, I think he might object to people calling him "nice" lol.

I have much respect for /u/abdada, and I didn't ever feel like he was being absurdly mean, but perhaps I spent too much time in some pretty aggressive forums. His contributions here have been fantastic, and I do hope to see him still contribute now and again. He experiments and it's easy to tell that he puts a lot of time, energy and resources into DIY. The fact that he shared his findings was extremely generous.

As for his abrasiveness, if I say something without knowing fully what I am talking about, I don't mind taking one on the chin if it means I'd learn something. I don't come to this subreddit to swing my nuts. I come here to learn and to share (when I have something worth sharing, heh). Being corrected, questioned, opposed, etc., is a positive thing.

I'm just starting to get a pretty decent grasp on mixing and he's had a hand in that. The regulars here are all very much appreciated, and even if I don't post much, it doesn't mean I don't read this sub every day.
