Taste Testing Tips Prt. 1. Cleanse Your Palate!
submitted over 10 years ago by DrMclovensThe Mad Alchemist

Ok guys, as a former chef's apprentice and culinary arts dabbler, i have some knowledge on food tasting methods. many of which work well for Vaping. i figured i would share a lot of what i know with you guys.

Much of which i learned during my time spent as a chef's apprentice. Some self taught etc.

I guess i should have started with this part but i plan on doing a bit of a series with this. there is so much that goes into taste testing, i simply can not do justice to the topic if i conglomerate it all in one messy post. so stay tuned :)

It would be EASY to argue that tasting is THE NUMBER ONE most important part of making a good recipe. and as expected, with such a big role, there is a lot to cover. so let's get started in a series i will call "Taste Testing Tips". Ok i will warn you. its a bit of a read but, i assure you, its well worth it. if you already know everything in one prt. you will probably learn something new in the next :). ok now stop, get up. go get a drink and maybe even a snack if you are hungry but, most importantly, Drip on that cotton, Grab and fill that tank, build that coil, grab your old school cigalike or whatever you are vaping on. doesnt matter we are all family here no matter what device is your preferred! . and finally, lets dive in! :)

Here i will explain the importance of cleansing the palate when tasting your e-juice,

When tasting multiple flavors back to back, which you will probably be doing when making multiple flavors at once. your palate can easily become overwhelmed. there is actually a chemical build up of flavors that stay on your taste buds, which makes distinguishing different flavors increasingly difficult.

Then you also have the same problem of identifying subtle notes when repetitively tasting the same flavor or flavor family. Say you make a batch of the same recipe just with subtle differences. this problem will easily occur.

Basically your tongue gets lazy on you, or "numb" if you will. here's the best way i can describe, follow along with me here. pinch your arm....no im serious go ahead, not hard but pinch it a little....go on I'll wait..........ok now dont let go, just a little pinch. Yeah ow that huts doesnt it? no bueno! i understand just bare with me ok now. read a long and keep that pinch on lol.

see at first its a no fun pain, but as it keeps going you realize you can bare it because its not as bad as at first. at this point you may be like, i can do this all day, still dont like it though. OKAY release. wait, rub it. ok done rubbing? pinch it again. LOL i know you hate me at this point but if you did it, it hurt almost just as bad as the first time didnt it?

yeah maybe not the best analogy, as the longer you hurt the more aggravating it gets and blah blah, but you get the idea

same concept of your taste buds. same flavor on your taste buds for so long, and it gets numbed out to it. clearing your palate (releasing the pinch) resets it. new and ready to go!

Okay enough rambling!!! On to the methods!!! :D

  • Table Water Crackers+Water (most common and easiest method.non salty, very bland crispy crackers, chew them up and drink some water. wait a min or 2 and go back to tasting. works fairly well for all flavors but not exceptionally well for any flavors)

  • Acidic flavors and sugar. (Most common is the fancy name "lemon sorbet" but here's a secret. it's just homemade lemonade: glass of water, lemon juice, and a little sugar, can be a little tricky because you dont want to leave an insanely strong sour taste in your mouth, that ruins it, u want it just strong enough where you have no taste in your mouth after a minuet or 2 after taking a few swallows. with the right mixture, "lemon sorbet" will work wonders for you. best for removing bakery type flavors or custardy creams)

  • Pickled Ginger (Pickled who? lol you know that stuff on sushi, no not the green snot, the thin pink stuff, yeah that! it works really well. just about 2 pieces, and a few chews of that and some water to wash down and you're ready to go joe. works really well for fruity flavors)

  • Milk (ok WOAH hold it partner. i know you guys just thought PERFECT! I HAVE MILK! but hang on. it ONLY works well, for extremely sweet and/or chocolate flavors. after clearing really sweet flavor out with milk, its best to clear the milk out with water. OH YEAH also works extremely well for cinnamon flavors)

  • Poi (for those who are serious, Poi is a Hawaiin food. Known for its flavorlessnes. its like a purple black pudding almost, it comes from a root. this stuff works absolute wonders for all flavors, but nobody is blaming you for not getting it haha. it will usually come in powder form, with the root turned into a powder, then you gotta learn how to make it. but if you enjoy DIY and are willing to do it, or just are curious enough about poi. GO FOR IT!)

well guys thanks for joining me in Prt. 1 of Taste Testing Tips. trust me i have more! but i will give you guys a break :) Hope you guys find this useful/helpful!

Hope to see you guys again on Part 2.! and hey mayyybe by the time i'm done, it will be such full info that Taste Testing Tips could be in the un read side bar ;) hint hint HAHAHA i would be glad to contribute the part i know really well :D

Nice post. I was having issues a bit ago with this, when I was trying to nail down a flavor, but it seemed to evade me. Turned out the flavor just blew, but I still cleanse my palate (sorta) between juices. I squirt some lemon juice in my mouth (the store brand, so not real) and swish it with water.

Also, a good thing to note, stay away from overly sweetened drinks just before and while you taste. I had some tea sweetened with simple syrup, and that sugary coating left my tongue asleep. Same for artificial fruit drinks, etc. (Hawaiian Punch comes to mind)

Finally, that's what that black goop was? It had an earthy note, but just a little, and tasted remarkably like nothing at all otherwise. I had it at Ono's on Kapahulu... Well, at least I know I wasn't going nuts.

This works with tasting beers but if you take a sip and hold the liquid on your tongue you can taste the flavor fading away. Now take a deep breath in through your nose and when you blow out (through your nose) you'll be able to taste again. Kind of wierd and obviously doing this with vaping would be tricky :)

That root is Taro, and TPA has a great version of it. BE WARNED. It's strong. I'm trying to make a coconut taro ice cream and I used 3% in the recipe. My next batch will be with .5%.

So I'm assuming it's best then to switch between several of these methods so that your vape tongue doesn't get vape tongue?! Mind:💥

hmm, no not necessarily, but it isnt a bad idea. its best to use the method that fits your recipe best. or if you are doing a lot of different flavors, save yourself the headache and do crackers and water. or poi is the best option for that, if you are willing.

edit: unless you are talking about switching methods from one taste test to another than...well again, yes its a good idea to switch them up lol. personally i use all the methods. depending on how much testing i am doing and for how long, and what kind of flavors i am doing.

You never said when to release the pinch the second time. When can I let go?

What about popcorn? I do wine tasting from time to time, not that I know anything about tasting wine...I'm just there to get drunk. Wineries usually have plain popcorn to cleanse your palate. I'm sure it would work the same for e-juice, but I've never tried it.

ah great question, popcorn is a common thing. however no chef in their right mind would use it. honestly because of the common problem. kernels getting stuck in your mouth. it is common for wineries and wine testing but it makes little sense. the popcorn also leaves a strong musky film in the mouth, buttered or not.

yes its plain but you dont want anything that can leave taste in your mouth or anything that cant be easily washed down when followed by a sip of water.

Thanks for your insight! Lots of things I would have never thought about! I'm going to refer a friend who runs a local vape shop to this thread for ideas on palate cleansers to stock by his taste testing area. I'm sure he'll love the ideas!

absolutely man., thats what this community is all about. some of the "lemon sorbet" lol would be cool. but harder. i would suggest the water table crackers and some water :)

now, that being said. if you only have popcorn...lets be honest. this isnt a life or death situation XDD. nor are you making half a million dollars a year as a head 3 star chef. so you will be fine HAHA :)

though i wouldnt want kernels stuck in my mouth while vaping

I wouldn't want kernels stuck in my mouth at all, for any reason, ever!
