Dipping
submitted over 10 years ago by Nemesis921

Soooooo, this may sound taboo, but I wanted to get this out there as a potential idea for ex dippers!

I was reading some posts where someone was talking about their boyfriend not being able to swap to vaping because he was a dipper, and there were great suggestions with creative ideas. People recommended him putting like mint leaves in his mouth and vaping to simulate the effect, and I have to say as a former dipper (and smoker, so vaping was super easy for me to get into) that would not be very similar at all.

Instead, and like I said some of you might consider this wasteful or plain weird, but why not just use the e juice as a liquid? Take like, a wintergreen flavor, and soak a balled up piece of paper towel or an herb mixture in a pouch in it, and then put that in your lip. I've tried it, and that memorable smokeless tobacco buzz hit me shortly thereafter. What do you think, guys? You might could even buy those weird (nasty but try it anyway I guess if you want) herbal snuffs used for quitting. Let some e juice soak into whatever you're about to pack in your lip and pop it in. It's definitely safer than tobacco, as the ingredients in e juice are actually used in food and ingested in a similar manner already. You would certainly use a little more (maybe like using 2 ml or a little less all at once?) but if one were looking for that buzz while attempting to quit dipping you might find a little more success. Before anyone says anything about gum, remember e juice will have way more nicotine, more suitable for a dipper than the measly 2-4mg inside gum.

I've actually been messing around with this while I work on matching the taste of some of my favorite dip brands with my DIY liquids. Any recipes around for that anyway? I'm not discussing dipping them, I'm seriously making them for my vape.

How many snarks could a snarky snark snark, if a snarky snark could snark snarks?

Dipped for 20 years. Tried gum and the patch more than once. Never worked. I couldn't last longer than 48 hours without a dip. Today is day 8 of no dip, the transition to just vaping was easier than expected. Cravings are mild but it is more of the 20 year habit I am trying to change.

I dipped for 17 years. I'm on year two of no dip because of vaping. Keep at it buddy I don't even crave it everyday anymore. Now about every 3-6 months I'll get a craving for it for a few hours. It gets way easier!

I've heard a good bit how people would dip tea leaves to help them quit/cut down. I don't know how well it works, but as a tea fiend, it sounds like a waste of good tea.

I used to put like pouches of tea in my mouth when I was trying to quit one time in high school.

It didn't have nicotine though, so I just felt like some jackass with a literal teabag in my mouth and I of course relapsed.

On a related note, I was talking to the proprietor of my local tea shop and he was told me about how when all the young high schoolers would go to the store to buy dip back in the '80s(?) and there'd be a huge line for it, he would walk past them and grab a box of Lipton tea and dip with that. Oddly, he said he never used tobacco.

He is, how should I say, eccentric and fairly tea obsessed. Apparently always has been too.

Bro, jakes chew. It packs right, tastes damn good, and is cheap. That plus smoking got me off dip and vicodin, then I've vaped to get off the smoking.

.... roundabout but that's how it's worked for me

I've tried other nicotine delivery alternatives like this before (suckers made by a pharmacist and such) and I almost always get the hiccups. It's not those little hiccups either. It's the ones that make you feel like you're about to swallow your head. I've had similar hiccups from licking a few drops of juice off of my fingers. It was 24mg and was only a few weeks after I quit dipping.

Not everyone has this problem and you have a good suggestion that's definitely worth a shot, I just wanted to add my experience.

That, in combination with horrible heartburn, is exactly why I had to quit dipping. You nailed it.

I was eating tums like candy for a while. I went to the dr and got a prescription for prevacid and that helped but didn't fix it. Between that and the horrible headaches that I was getting almost every day I had to quit. The headaches were affecting everything. Things have been sooooooooo much better since I started vaping. I rarely have headaches and I haven't had heartburn since I quit around christmas.

Yes, I had the same experience. Dipping used to give me heartburn on rare occasion, so maybe it's that. I've looked around on the internet, and people act like the posters were asking if this bottle of stuff called cyanide was good for headaches. Using a wintergreen flavor almost felt like that wintergreen snus Camel put out like 3 or 4 years ago? Worst time I had doing it was some slight nausea, which was from swallowing the liquid probably. Same thing happens when you dip, anyway.

Either way, maybe it's a thing people could try with extreme caution. I wouldn't put too much in, of course. It's my answer to the bans on vaping new to my area some days.

Going off topic, I just started DIY juice last week, and I absolutely love it. I control production now, big tobacco! Woo.

I started vaping from dipping. Easy transition for me even though I would go through 2 cans a day. I would also occasionally light up the hookah though so that might have helped me be comfortable vaping too.

I really quit dipping years ago accidentally with the patch, but the thing is I was a dipper and a smoker so I really just used 2 patches at once for awhile and then I started smoking again and never really jumped headfirst into regular smokeless tobacco use after that.

Either way the swap was simple for me because I smoked too, so vaping just naturally appealed to me. I tried this after bumping into the topic and looking at suggestions months ago. It was the first idea I had, and it seemed like it should have occurred to more people to at least try it by now, so I thought I'd finally say something.

I've seriously felt like kind of a weirdo for doing it when I have, honestly. It's the closest alternative method I could imagine without just importing a ton of snus from Sweden.

Even with the patch "quitting" basically just meant I only took dip when offered and started buying cigs exclusively.

I am a former dipper... 7 years. Never once smoked a cig. I also used to be a heavy hookah smoker (my old YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/shoresidejake ) and vaping has saved my mouth (and my life).

Ever make any money off that channel? Youtube intrigues me.

Yeah actually I still make money on it... about $100 every month or two. Search "carpet burn repair" or "fix carpet burns" in Google... see that video? It makes me money every day. Also, I have a new channel I do with daily vlogs - it's at http://www.youtube.com/c/onemanwulffpack and it's slowly earning me a nice little bit of money.

I've come across dippers in the shop I work for, and they have successfully kicked the dip with a vape. 9/10 times they are fine with a basic kit and 6mg juice.

This is the kind of idea you can take to market.

I haven't dipped in years but I can see how this could really work out well.

Hmm wow. You may have just given me ideas to fix the one thing that tempted me to relapse again. I started in high school with dipping. Copenhagen wintergreen was my daily dip and cope snuff was my favorite (too messy for every day use for me though) then, even with great dental hygiene, I noticed my gums reseeding in about 4 months. I didn't like that at all and picked up smoking (I had actually smoked before but only with friends once in a while) I guess you could say I picked my poison. I must say though I had enjoyed dipping much more. Getting that new can, crack and pack. Get a pinch the size of a golf ball and stuff that son a bitch in!

When I first started vaping I was so happy, done smoking but I commonly missed dipping. I even bought a can about 3 months into vapin and threw it away right before I opened it. It was that battle I think we all went through

Now I'm a vaper for life! Love it WAY more than smoking! Even more than dipping but I still miss dipping. However I couldn't give a damn less about even thinking about picking up a nasty as stink stick again.

This is a great idea I think. The Nassau is a common side effect when you "Over Dose" on nic. Same thing happens with dip. So I don't think I would be worried about that.

My only problems: I know I could make some good dipping flavors for myself. The problem is the texture, gettin g the right stuff to make it really feel and act like dip. Tea just doesn't do it. I have tried many times. I wonder about soaking beef jerky....a bland bland beef jerky. You know, the shredded cans. And soaking them in some e juice. I just gotta remind myself not to try to eat it XD

What a great thought. But what to use!!

OMG! I just realized you wouldn't have to worry about the diacetyl!!! I'm going to really start looking into this idea of yours!

1 points

by loud_carover 10 years ago

I had a similar idea a few weeks ago and my girlfriend thought I was batshit crazy and I basically forgot about it. But I wanted to get a can of beef jerky (you know the kind I'm talking about) and mix up some (maybe 3 or 6mg) wintergreen juice, soak it, and dip it. To me, that would basically be dip. Depending on how strong the beef jerky flavor is it could actually be pretty close.

Now the only challenge is matching a liquid to a dip flavor other than wintergreen or mint. Wintergreen was my all day every day dip but seeing as how I can't vape the same flavor for more than ten minutes without getting bored I would have to venture out.

How do you think you could replicate that dip "burn". one of my favorite things about when i used to dip was that burn in my lip. Along with that hardcore buzz. Lemme know your findings after you make some progress. I have so many friends that dip and would love to offer them a way safer alternative.

As your doctor* the only thing I would be worried about was the dosage. A good bit of research would be in order and you should start low and slow, just like any recreational drug. Like you say, it's straight nicotine with perhaps some flavoring and a carrier chemical in the form of vg/pg. I'd suggest starting with a very dilute solution and keep track of the dosage.

In my amateur opinion, there is no reason you couldn't make your own nicotine lozenges, so why not a dip substitute?

*disclaimer: I am NOT a doctor

I was a smoker for about 7 years....than quit........took up chewing/dipping for about 4. Along with (sorry for language) Litterally fucking my teeth up I had to find something to make me quit. Hence I came to vaping... Honestly for me it was an oral fixation. ....it was difficult at first not having a lipper in...but after a week of vaping all cravings stopped.. I've now been tobacco free for 5 years thus past february. Honestly I would never put E liquid straight in my lip or mouth. I see your idea and yeah its not the greatest, but I know you want to help your buddy.

Take it from me.....If they want an 11000 dollar dentist bill......go ahead and keep chewing.....but for me. Vaping was the answer

That's why I quit chewing (finally after 6 years). I had up to two pouches in at a time, had spit bottles all over the place, soars all over my shit, receding gum lines. Then vaping came along, the harps sounded and I never looked back.

Throw about 2mil in R&D at this idea and I see it working. You'd need some kind of neutral carrier substance soaked with nic and juice, in the proper formulation, packed in a loose leaf or teabag-like...thing.

I'm calling it now. It will be known as Soaking. How's that soak? Oh man, just picked up the best soak flavor!
