My own coffee extraction - update!
submitted over 10 years ago by ThrownOut2013

Hi all!

As promised in my first thread I am providing an update to my first extraction post.

The coffee flavor seems to have held up pretty well over the last week. As of today my coffee/vanilla bean ice cream/German chocolate cake flavor is just as good as it was from the start.

My tea extraction (which is older than my coffee) is also holding up quite nicely, and is actually becoming the base to some of my favorite juices currently. Spearmint Tea (Mintea) is absolutely stellar right now. The spearmint flavor is pairing quite nicely with the black tea extract. Will be doing a fruit version soon (Fruitea) and when the recipes are refined I will be releasing them to all you lovely people.

If you have any questions feel free to ask! This is definitely making my DIY experience much more enjoyable as I just hadn't found any coffee or tea bases I really loved wholeheartedly.

I did a coffee extract last night with VG. I took a small Pyrex measuring cup added 40 ml VG, and two teaspoons of French roast coffee. Put that inside a shallow boiling water bath. Let it heat up for about 20 mins. It turned into a thin mud. Then I put a coffee filter over another measuring cup using a rubber band. It was thin enough to filter through the filter. Leaving me with about 30 ml of coffee extract. Think I may use it mixed with some sweet cream, vanilla custard and a bit of coconut today and try it out. I'll report back tonight.

Please do! I know of a few Tim Horton's addicts that would die if I could replicate that flavor.

Since I'm not a max VG'er, I would probably do a 50/50 mix, just because PG can hold more in solution than VG.

I will definitely use PG next time. The VG solution seems to be weak. Had to use a lot of it to get to the desired flavor strength. Added sweet cream and vanilla custard along with a bit of sweetener. It is steeping in my mini crock pot for a few hours.

How did you do your tea extraction; is it basically the same process as the coffee? And did it get bitter at all?

Same process except I just used the tea bag it came in rather than a stand alone filter. It's bitter if you use too much flavor. Would not recommend more than 3mls of it at most in any mix.

Thank you. I've got some scented teas that I would like to try making.

You mean 3%?

You've inspired me to try this with some hazelnut flavored coffee. I wonder if a similar method could also work with flavored pipe tobacco?

I've done coffee twice and it's been pretty weak both times. Good but weak. I just did some nutmeg and some cinnamon today, it's filtering right now. Smells great. Time will tell if it's any good.
