If you're mixing for yourself, just keep a sensible head about you. Do you see contamination in your ejuice? Floating cat/dog hairs?

No? You're good then.

I treat mixing like food prep. Clean environment and tools, and gloves when necessary.

The ideal environment has no/very little dust or hair in the air. Cap your bottles if you aren't taking stuff out of them or putting something in. Wear glasses & gloves when moving concentrated nicotine; and make sure the area is ventilated if it is highly concentrated.

I keep my bulk in mason jars personally. For the bottles your cheapest bet is ebay.

Heartland Vapes has bulk bottles. If you just mean "bulk bottles" as in "big ass bottles", I just grab my 250ml+ ones off of Amazon because Amazon Prime is dope.

• Consider mixing by volume and then mix by weight anyways.

• Start off making recipes that sound good. Don't start off with exploring. Let that come later.

• I wouldn't recommend it to someone just starting out, but once you get comfy handling nicotine go for 100mg/ml. So much cheaper! Its insane!

• Get some kind of storage for flavorings and shit. I never have enough storage.

• You will end up with tons of flavorings over time. Don't throw out the ones that you didn't love because in a few months you'll inevitably see some amazing clone you wanna try and have to wait for that ONE flavor you threw out to arrive.

• If you love a flavor, don't buy another small bottle of it when you restock. Go big or go home. I run out of TFA Vanilla Bean Ice Cream all the time because I keep forgetting to get a huge bottle instead of another 10ml. Its annoying.

• You will never have enough bottles. Ever. Buy so many bottles.

• DIY isn't hard. Making a good recipe is hard. It takes time, patience, creativity, and a good palette. All the gourmet juice out there isn't using a magical ingredient to make their juice good, they're just patiently refining a recipe over time. You pay for research and development.

• Steeping is so important. I've had several recipes I've made, tried, gagged on, and then threw in a box to be forgotten. Then I remember they exist a month later and they come out pretty damn good.

Taste flavors by themselves first!

I read it, but didn't do it. I tried to just throw shit together that I thought sounded good. I made a fair amount vapable stuff, but I also made a lot of shit.

Don't start out buying 20 flavors to "make some stuff". Its so much easier and less discouraging to get started by following known successful recipes. Make cool shit later once you have a flavor collection for those known recipes.

/u/xythin -- I just ordered a 0.01g scale from a DIY user here (he hasn't shipped yet, but I am hopeful to get it this week). Once I have it I will do my best to try to figure out the specific gravity of each flavor since I stock all of them.

For me, personally, I dilute either 1 drop per 29mL of VG or mix 10% flavor to 90% VG and then use that to create my flavor mixes. The first dilution I call "ready mix" because it is vapeable right away (although probably overflavored but it's a start). The latter one is preferred because I can take other people's recipes and multiply by 10 and use the 10% dilutions.

So if Open Source Vapor says 0.65% raspberry, I mix 6.5% of my 10% dilution.

More control that way. 1 drop of MF is way too potent for testing -- it can be too much for some 5ml test flavors.

Probably best to dilute them and then assign the weight of what you diluted them with, pg or vg or whatever.

Wizard labs is great for testing out new flavors before ordering in bulk. Otherwise, I generally use bullcity, ecigexpress, and tfa direct. There are others listed in the side bar and found with the search function that are good as well, but the ones I listed are who I use most of the time.

There are "master percentage lists" for most of the flavoring companies, but they can be massively off. Different companies with similarly named flavorings will often be at different strengths. Testing the flavors by themselves at varying percentages is a good way to see how strong they are. Also, looking at other people's recipes that use the same flavorings helps. After you get an idea of how strong they are, decide what you want at the forefront, and what you want on the bottom end, or backing the top note up. You're on the right track with starting low. Most people start waaay too high. So for your example, I would make the donut stand out and back it with the chocolate and bavarian cream. Getting the right percentages will just be trial and error unless you are following someone's recipe.

I agree with /u/nicobeak - but still wanted to offer my 2 cents. When I have 3 flavors that I want to blend (mix into a new unique flavor)- I follow a regimented process. First I'll find existing reference points for the flavors online or from my previous recipes. If I don't know the flavor, I will make single batches until finding the peak standalone percentage. Then I will divide all starting percentages by 60% or so and begin working upwards.
 
For example; From past experience I like Juicy Peach at ~7%, Kiwi at 5% and Key Lime at 2% . I would make a 10ml test batch with Juicy peach at 4.2%, Kiwi at 3% and lime at 1.2%. I shake and vape on wickless coils, then wait 3 days before another taste test. If I'm in a rush, I will make 2 or 3 test batches at a time in 7.5ml test sizes(1/4 a 30ml bottle) and for each blend I will have one flavor at 15% above the others. This lets me know what my best leading flavor note is.
