I did my first coffee flavor extract last night!
submitted over 10 years ago by ThrownOut2013

And it turned out absolutely wonderful. I did a "hot vg" extraction method.

I simply filled a coffee filter with 2 scoops of coffee (just a medium roast walmart brand coffee), then wrapped it into two more filters I twisted it off and tied it closed. I used a rubberband but anything should do to close off the filters. I then filled a glass cup with 30 ml of VG and submerged the filtered coffee into the vg. I then took a pot of water and brought it to a simmer.

After getting the water simmering, I sat the VG + Coffee filter combination in a glass into the hot water. I let it sit for 30-40 minutes on a simmer while I would push on the filtered coffee every 10 minutes or so with a spoon.

Once the ~40 minutes was up, I removed the pot from the stovetop and the glass from the pot. I then took the filtered coffee and squeezed it as much as I could. In all reality I only yielded about 15ml of flavoring so I need to find a better way to squeeze the coffee filters.

Now onto the flavor; I mixed 3ml of the flavor with 1.5ml of a German Chocolate Cake flavoring and 1.5ml of a Vanilla Bean Ice Cream flavor I had purchased a while back.(both from SVA Flavors)

I'll tell you what... I have tried a lot of coffee flavors in the past, and this is by far the most authentic thing I have ever tasted. Not even my favorite vendor coffee flavor (Night Shift from VCV) comes close to how authentic of a taste this flavor has.

10/10 would recommend anyone wanting a coffee flavor to attempt to extract their own.

As a side note I also recently did this with some tea bags and experienced some pretty awesome results as well!

I might have to try this. I've never thought about doing an extraction but damn I really want a good coffee flavor and nothing is doing it for me.

It's really a simple process. Definitely recommend giving it a shot with your favorite coffee. I plan on picking up a dark roast at some point to compare flavor points when extracting it.

I did it a while back. Expect coffee. Don't expect cappucinos or lattes or sweet anything. It takes like fresh black coffee, cause it is in a way.

Great stuff. Been meaning to try this for ages, need to get around to it.

Seemingly though it tastes burnt after a couple of weeks. Maybe do a follow up?

I will absolutely do a follow up in a couple weeks. I am going to batch out more flavor today and sit aside a bottle to forget about it for a couple weeks and revisit it.

Ok i just tryed it.

Did it a bit diferently.

1Tblsp in 30 ml pg inside a cup, 20 mins in simmerimg water (doing the recipe on the sidebar).

Then poured it in another cup with a coffe filtre on the middle, its still filtering, i think im goong to let the coffe dry before using it.

well i got arround 15/18 ml of extract. really nice.

i mixed some vanilla custard and added 7 drops of the extract, i think i need to add a bit more though.

with a couple hours in the eletronic cleaner i tryed it out and i can really feel the coffee in the exale, suddently this custard felt like "full bodied" if you know what i mean.

A+, will extract again :D

yesterday i talked with /r/onions_can_be_sweet about lemon juice, going to be mixing some strawberry peach with a bit of lemon, should taste good.

Thanks for sharing! I was just thinking today I would love to mix my chocolate and vanilla bean with a coffee flavor and was about to start searching for a good one when I stumbled across this. Will be doing this this weekend.

Coffee has always seemed to me (like tea) to be one of those hard to nail flavors.

However I feel like with this method it's become trivial. And not to mention getting the flavor to be in a VG base, leaving this batch of juice to be approximately 92% VG 8% PG (exact numbers being 91.75% VG and 8.25% PG).

Curious how the flavor will hold up over time, as brewed coffee has a tendency to go stale. Save some and mix it again in a week or two, and see how it does and let us know?

Sure thing. I plan on doing up a larger batch today so I will sit some of it to the side and forget about it for a couple weeks.

What percentage did you use this at?

In my flavor mix I used roughly 3ml in a 30ml bottle, or about 10%.

Hey man nice post, i was wondering if this approach is viable for fruit tea ie twinings fruit teas, as i think i would never have to buy another concentrate again - or at least a very limited few.

thanks
