Plastic or glass bottles?
submitted over 10 years ago by bigbows1985Mixologist

I have been try to decide between the 2. Is the only reason glass is better is because it is easy to clean? Can't you clean plastic bottles? Are their any other reasons I am missing? What do you prefer?

LDPE is permeable to oxygen so for long term storage it's not great. In saying that, you probably get more oxygen in through the 'seal' (that goes for glass too) than what would transfer through the walls of the container.

Amber/brown glass blocks most UV light which is a good thing.

LDPE (other plastics also) can absorb some flavours and you'll have a hell of a time getting them out. On the other hand they can be cheap enough to be disposable.

I just go for regular old LDPE squeezy bottles for mixed juice. In an ideal world I would use glass for my nic and concentrate storage but at the moment I'm running with PET as they're far cheaper here.

I use cobalt/blue glass bottles with some foil tape as a label. Just looks nice.

I use blue glass also. Easier to clean and larger mouth for putting ingredients in.

Do the cobalt/blue block light like the amber? It is hard to find the glass bottles bullcity only had to 30 ml so bought those and some plastic.

Cobalt does block light, not as well as amber but better than green or clear. I use 30ml bottles too. I don't think getting light blocking bottles really matters, 30mls of juice doesn't last very long anyway.

I got some 120ml blue from rtsvapes.com, they carry 250ml also but were out of stock at the time

Why are glass bottles in such limited supply at all the DIY websites? Wizard labs S/O a few other only had 1 or 2 I ended up buying 4 from bullcity (all they had of 30 ml) with my order.

I prefer glass for the pseudo healthier reasons, but all my glass bottles regardless of source are crap. They leak. Or the rubber lets too much flavor volatile escape and it becomes muted too quickly.

I switched back to LDPE for now. No leaks. Easy to squeeze and drip. Way more exacting on drop size, too, it seems.

Thanks I am looking at some now. I just started DIY and found some recipes I like and am going to make some big batches. Are LDPE bottles ok for juice to sit in for like 3 months because thats how long these batches will probably last me?

Yep I haven't seen any issues on juice that's 2 years old.

Note that light does destroy nic and flavor. So LDPE lets way more light through than amber glass.

Thanks I think I will give them a try.

You're not supposed to leave rubber eye droppers in your glass bottles for storage

I go with plastic. about 99% of the time, I use 15ml bottles I bought off ebay. I throw them away after one use. Until I get something that I reproduce a few times, I make 10ml batches.

I bought the bottles from here

Nothing really scientific, but I mix my batches and store in glass bottles (blue from wizard labs). Than I keep one of those with me either in my laptop bag or my briefcase. For my dropper I use a small plastic bottle that I refill till it falls apart. But yeah I don't use plastic too much because of how quickly I ruin them.

I use 60ml glass vapor chef bottles for my own stash, and plastic bottles to sell juice to friends. A lot of glass bottles have problems with leaking or not closing well, and they're also expensive. On the other hand, they're easier to clean, nicer looking, and will last a lot longer if you're not clumsy. Do whatever you want, just make sure to get good glass bottles.

Thick glass with a good seal. The reviews on those seem positive enough!

I bought a set of these back in September for mixing and still have all of them (I only mix for personal use). They've held up extremely well, haven't leaked on me at all, and I've dropped a couple on my dorm floor(Hard tile) and not even chipped them. Only thing to note is they aren't child proof.

Thick glass, and cheap. And I've never had them leak

I'm using Amber and Cobalt glass bottles with drippers from Mountain Rose Herbs. These are the only glass bottles I've found that don't leak like hell. I bought some clear glass ones from Amazon and the dripper lids are shit and back off to the point where it might as well not even have a lid on it.

My husband likes the plastic squeezy bottles.

I would like to see scientific proof from those claiming ldpe or pet plastic is unhealthy. I've done the research and can not find any proof to such claims.

Since your having a hard time finding research I just googled it for you. Link

The 1 "study" that this site cites isn't peer reviewed, isn't specific about PET and isn't proof of anything. This article has nothing to say about ldpe. So I'll ask the same question again, can I get some scientific studies proving that PET and ldpe is unhealthy?

It comes down to what you feel safe to use. You want to use PET and LDPE; then that is fine. Use what "YOU" feel is best for "YOU". If you think it's impossible for toxins to leech into ejuice then that is cool too. I'll do what I think is best and you do the same.
