Awww man this was supposed to be a DIY weekend o' bliss, but I think I've blown it before I've even begun... Had a steady stream of vapemail arriving all week. I have been researching and reading until my brain hurts every night for a long while. I ordered a bunch of lab equipment and glass. I'm an all out kinda guy and decided I needed to sterilize everything by boiling for ten full minutes. Just spent two hours scrubbing and then boiling in distilled water all my new gear plus everything I thought I might need to touch with gloves on. Dozen droppers and bottles, couple of beakers, two 10ml pipettes for my new pump. a few mason jars, tweezers, all the lids, and finally 5 baby food jars that I was about to use to make some natural extracts. I've been using baby food jars for 20 years for 100's of different purposes and this too just seemed a natural fit. Only I've never boiled them before...
The clear adhesive used to affix the labels never does quite come off... until it's boiled for ten minutes apparently. Everything is sticky to some degree. I even threw in all my plastic lids and rubber balls for the last couple of minutes... I think I've ruined it all including maybe the roaster.
What have I done?
Get some Goo Gone or mineral spirits, you need some kind of non-polar solvent to get that gunk off. Shouldn't give you too much trouble if you use the right solvent.
This. Goo gone works for all my labels. Just apply a little to the leftover adhesive and wait a few mins and it should wipe off with a dry paper towel. Then just clean with soap and water.
I'm concerned about the insides of small bottles and pipettes that I can't properly access with a brush. Do you think Goo gone will rinse off the best? Thanks for the input
99% iso won't even touch it. I have a good selection. What do you recommend? i have both goo and mineral spirits, paint thinner and i already tried laquer thinner on different jars.
If water rinsing is my only way to clean off the spirits, can it be safe for ejuice after coming into contact?
Edit I have toluol, varsol, white gas, lighter fluid? Just wondering which one will clean off the best in your opinion
I'd try the goo gone. I've cleaned everything from label gunk to rifle barrels with it, and it's relatively non-toxic with little vapor. Failing that, try lighter fluid or mineral spirits.
Kerosene and the more extreme solvents will just be more dangerous to your lungs/anything not on fire than it's worth.
Try soaking it in rubbing alcohol
laquer thinner experiment takes it clean off but not sure how easy it is to clean off. I bought some long thin brushes but don't have any long enough to go all the way down the long pipettes. I will try iso right now.
Before my UC arrives, does anyone know if the same peril applies with heated ultrasonics? I was planning on recycling my juice bottles from various vendors, by first cleaning them in the UC with their labels still on. Will the UC shred the gunk or just make a mess?
