A Real Nightmare
submitted over 10 years ago by deadnugent

Ever since my honeymoon last October I've been hooked on this stuff. My wife and I vaped it all week out in the woods. It was awesome. I've since gone through about 360ml of it and it's one of the only vendor juices I buy. I love /u/_bombies, but I thought I'd take a crack at cloning this juice. This is the first juice ive ever tried to clone and it has been a real bitch. I've actually gone through about 40 different tests just to get where I am now. You can see my previous posts asking for help in identifying some of the characteristics. I don't think this is 100% there (I could be waaay off), but it's REAL close to my palate. The juices smell almost identical. Probably needs some tweaking but I thought I'd put it up here to get some feedback.

6% LA Mint Chocolate Chip

4% TFA Graham Cracker (Clear)

2.5% TFA Mild Black

.5% LA Root Beer

3 drops per 10 ml menthol

Let me know what you think!

Edit: forgot to add, I mixed this at max VG 3mg

I'm no authority on Bombies, nor do I speak for Michael in any way. I'll give some input though since you asked.

This sounds like a solid start for sure. It may taste very similar, in the same way my nana cream clone tastes largely the same but is not the precise recipe.

Specifically:

  • A quick search didn't turn up with anything, but I strongly remember Michael saying ARN contains nine different flavorings. I could be remembering incorrectly here, though.
  • LA Mint Chocolate Chip is a great idea; I've never personally used it. This idea has legs.
  • TFA Graham Cracker is very likely. However, some of the Black n' Mild style flavoring have a distinct graham flavor, so this could be a trick of the mind.
  • TFA Mild Black could work. FE Black Mile, FE Black Mile +, FE Black n Milk, FE French Pipe, etc are all very similar and may be worth playing around with.
  • I've mentioned here before that I distinctly taste TFA Root Beer in ARN. LA's version could very definitely work in substitution.
  • I don't really get a menthol feel from ARN; it's more a "mint" instead of menthol.

I was recently gifted a bottle of Lazarus Vintage's "Christmas 2014" flavor and it's an almost 1:1 clone of A Real Nightmare. The only thing different is a slightly lacking "deep" note that I'd attribute to its lack of tobacco flavorings. If you can get your hands on some, it may be helpful to isolate the "chocolate mint" aspects of ARN from the tobacco, then build the two elements from there.

You mentioned TFA root beer to me a few weeks in a thread ago. I tried it and got a strong lemon pledge note that didn't seem right. However I also picked up the LA version and holy hell is it black. It is barely noticeable in flavor but it gives this juice it's dark color. Although mine is almost a brown whereas the original is more of a dark burnt red.

Interesting on the lemon note in TFA Root Beer! Yeah, the LA Root Beet has caramel coloring to make it so dark.

I've been mixing with Black Mile+ and find it to be a great substitute base for ARN. What percentage TFA Root Beer would you recommend trying? The stuff I have smells/tastes pretty terrible at 3-5%. My mix is also lacking something I thought was cinnamon pastry but could be the "chocolate mint" part. * 5% Black Mile+ * 2% FA Peppermint * 1%FA Chocolate * 1%FA Cocoa * 1% FA Cookie

Have you tried this with TFA Double Chocolate (dark)? Everything I mix with it, I get that hint of A Real Nightmare.

Yes and I was convinced it was the base for about 20 mixes. The problem is Double Choc dark has a distinct cakeyness. In the process of coming up with this recipe though I did make a badass peppermint patty with Double Chocolate dark as the base. It's nothing like ARN lol

Nice! Mind sharing the recipe on that? I've been looking for a good York's peppermint patty using DCD as the base.

Sure! It's really simple but uses Flavor Art. This one is better with steeping and I also like to add a little sweetener as I find FA cookie really good but kind of dry.

6% TFA Double Choc dark

2% FA Cookie

1% FA Peppermint

.5% FA Anise

I've never had a real nightmare, but from the description and from your ingredients list, it sounds like a boba's bounty variation? Does the LA mint chocolate chip have a real dark chocolate taste?

It's kind of a dark chocolate but IMO this juice is only vaguely similar to Boba's. I recommend you pick up a bottle and try the real thing it's very good.

Sorry man I just wouldn't feel right selling a cloned juice. I'll send you 10mls if you want and you can decide if it's worth it to order the flavors.
