Have You Discovered any Unexpected Flavor Applications?
submitted over 10 years ago by MineDoggerMixologist

Can I use a drop of bread crust flavoring to make my tobacco flavors seem more combustible? Will .5% absinthe make my mandarin orange flavor more vivid?

Basically, have you found a combo or underused flavoring that may not be good for its intended use but can enhance another mix, or tastes like something completely other in esp. large or small quantities? I've gotten a pretty good handle on regular flavor proportions and I need to start delving into the details and cheats.

Since it's not been mentioned, but I believe it's common knowledge.....a little pear really makes apples pop!

I use TFA Pear all over the place. Really rounds things out.

Dragon Fruit is awesome for this too in tiny percentages.

Did a blueberry (wild), pomegranate, hibiscus. All TFA. A little bit of pear really made it come together.

Pear was the missing ingredient in my pink starburst blend.

I put about 3-4 drops (in 30ml) of creme de menthe in a majority of my flavors. Never gives it a minty flavor or cooling sensation but smooths out pretty much everything and takes away any throat hit on lung inhales.

I'm all about the "hit" but that's still useful information, I might need to tame a harsh tobacco mix.

Who's creme de menthe do ya use? I can't find my old favorite from MBV anymore. :/

Although- MBK recently told me on a post here they moved away from FW for many flavors, I think this is the one they used to use.

I totally forgot MBV uses flavorwest! THANK YOU!!! I finally got my favorite menthol back (was a menthol man for the 10 years I smoked).

Orange can help "brighten" a custard flavor used in small amounts, I use about 3 drops per 30 mL, it helps define the flavor and keeps it from being overly savory.

Interesting. About to pull the trigger on some Cap V2 custard when I get more supplies. Was hoping this thread would get a little more attention, maybe some more cooks will log on this evening.

Pull the trigger! Just got some CAP V2 and holy sheetballs this stuff is worthy of the hype. Mixed up a simple recipe yesterday with Cap Sweet strawberry and Cap V2 and I can't stop vaping it. Really looking forward to mixing up more custardy vapes with this stuff.

I'll sell you about a brand new bottle and one with a couple mls missing. I hate the stuff personally.

May have to put off my order for a bit for financial shrinkage, but since you mentioned it, what size bottles and how much you askin? I'd have just PMed you but if I don't take you up on it somebody else here might be tempted by the offer. Could also trade, I've got mad silica wick over here.

I just mixed my first bit and I have to agree at this point unless age does wonders to it.

This doubles down with Catalan cream - I feel that cream has a citrus like spice. Edit- Catalan cream is also really good at smoothing out tobaccos, as its spice is mostly....cinnamon?

for some reason, a tiny amount (1% or less) of lemon seems to make strong flavors like peanut butter taste more smooth. I have no idea why, but I put lemon in my PB cup and PB banana liquids and they taste way better without having even a hint of lemon taste.

Cool. I find that in regular cooking lemon can help a lot of flat or uninteresting flavors pop even if the lemon isn't prominent. Certainly would not have thought of using it on PB flavors on my own.

i found a s'mores recipe that used a tiny bit and accidentally put it in the peanut butter bannana bottle. great success.

Adding Citric Acid, both as a flavor changer and preservative. I've started adding 1% to 1.5% to my fruit mixes, and .5% to others. See Fizzmustards NanaCream recipe- It makes sweet notes of fruit flavors "pop". This isn't always a good thing, don't try it in Tobacco mixes lol. I have had especially good results with starchy fruit like mango, jackfruit, banana, and papaya.

Using Strawberry as a natural sweetener is also big for many recipes.

In my opinion- TFA Juicy Peach & TFA Mango have flavor changing properties with TFA Jackfruit. Peach makes it sweeter, and Mango adds savory.

I've got a bottle of malic acid... but isn't that supposed to cause some kind of issue with flavor after it steeps for a while or something?

1 points

by meanrockSDover 10 years ago

Malic acid isn't the same as citric acid, and does mute some flavors over time significantly.

This ones a little 'out there' but I found that cucumber is amazing in very small percentages when mixed with citrus flavors. I had a lemon-lime that tasted like floor cleaner. I added two drops of cucumber and it is now the most refreshing vape ever.

May be a bit out there, but that's exacty the type of thing I'm looking for. What brand?

I use .2-.4g FA raspberry in most things with watermelon. Really brights the watermelon up.

Yeah very little, flavour art is way more concentrated than tfa must the time.

A tina bit (0.5% - 1%) of TFA Butter really warms up flavors like apple pie.
