Backup your notes.

Be it Google Docs or MediaFire or a thumb drive; make backups frequently. I got a new mod the other night, an all copper Apollo competition mod with a new Copper Doge to replace my Nemesis & shitty clone Doge with almost no insulator.

So last night around 1 am slightly drunk I'm vaping & gaming & shiz, letting my Apollo sit on the magnets that close my laptop lid. Forget that my harddrive is pretty much directly underneath where I'm placing my mod...not too much later and my screen goes black. Disk Read Error. Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to restart.

Currently installing my new bigger capacity drive that I've been meaning to do...then attempting disk recovery.

TL;DR don't place magnet switch mods near your harddrive & backup often. I'm fairly certain I've lost all of my mixing notes; but I have photographic memory and quite a lot of notes to re-create.

Evernote is also pretty handy for keeping records.

Yeah i used to use Evernote like 5 years ago. I still had it on my C drive until about 3 harddrives ago. lol.

I do have a two-fold solution for you: switch to an SSD, and keep your juice calculator backup on a thumb drive. I had a hard drive failure on my system, but it was no biggie since I always have backup images of the drives. Last week I installed a 240GB PNY SSD that I got from Best Buy for under $80 (had a coupon). Made 2 partitions, @100GB for storage, and the remainder for the OS. Windows 7 64-bit boots up in 15 seconds. Best money spent ever.

Get Acronis for your image and backup, and set your schedule to back everything up. As far as photos, music, other stuff you'd be concerned about losing, use an external drive, and don't keep it on the laptop/PC.

I want an SSD pretty bad but i'm a poor nigga why do you think I took up DIY? :p but in all seriousness my last backup image was from just a couple weeks before I took up DIY so i'm not too bad off. My external drive was stolen a couple years back & my best friend is helping me with backups with his million & one drives 'til I can afford the infamous SSD & a new external. I'm already back up and running but he gave me Windows 8 and I don't know how I feel about this. lol.

I It seems like hard drives die more frequently lately, but it's probably because we have them running 24/7 more often now. I lost one of the four 1TB drives in my Drobo last year, and another one went on me about a month ago. Then, last week, a 500GB drive in one of my NAS units died on me. Thankfully, they are a whole lot cheaper now, and the prices keep dropping.

I commit my recipes alongside the code for my recipe calculator, partially for this reason.

Speaking of which, that's probably not a bad idea even if you don't write code. Then you can track your revisions and stuff.
