Question on the Bombies Seven Seas Clone in the side bar.
submitted almost 11 years ago by Paulg287

I tried this Seven Seas clone, but I used LorAnns Strawberry instead of TFA. I'm getting a sort of chemical sterile taste, and not much fruity flavor going on. Do you think the brand of strawberry would make this happen? I steeped it in an ultrasonic cleaner in hot water for 45 min. Do you think I should steep it longer?

Keep in mind that I've never actually tried the real Bombies Seven Seas. I have tried Kiss The Ring, and loved it so I thought I'd give this a shot.

Oh sweet, thanks for the reply! I'll give it a shot. I guess I need to start sticking with one brand. I didn't think it'd make that big of a difference.

On the contrary, you should different brands of the same flavors. Not all liquids are made the same.

Capella Strawberry Sweet is what I use and it works nicely.

What percentage are you using?

I use the CAP strawberry sweet as well, and I use between 2.5-5%, recently when I make the 7seas clone posted above I cut all the flavors by 25-50% because I found it a bit overwhelming otherwise.

I've tried this recipe, but I suspect the watermelon is too strong. Also, I'm pretty sure that TFA watermelon can seem a bit "chemically". That could be part of it.

As you probably know, the % used for one brand of strawberry is not necessarily an appropriate % for other brands of strawberry. You can search for common % that people are using for your flavour, and work that into the recipe. Play around with it. Who knows? - you might improve upon the original.

A lot of TFA flavors have what I refer to as a 'medicinal' taste when you over flavor with them. It's annoying but you really need to try each flavor independently and keep solid notes to hit the right percentages. It might be perfect at 5% but taste like shit at 6%. TFA Boysenberry on the other hand, im maxing that potent stuff out at 0.5%

Another issue I have with TFA is the stinky feet effect. Primarily flavors like black honey tobacco, fudge brownie, IW cavendish, etc. Have this stinky ass foot smell (on exhale) when you use too high of a percentage.

I think honey bacco is terrible anyways lol. But that's a good point. I haven't tested my flavors individually. Im going to give this testing method a try. I found it on this sub. It seems very complete.

Now here I was thinking I was the only one in the world who was experiencing this "stinky feet" effect on some flavors. Thanks for putting this all into perspective

Ah thank you I forgot about the different recommended percentages for each flavor.

I think this recipe is okay but the %'s are far too high, recently I've used this recipe and just cut the flavorings by 25-50% and (to me) it comes out much better. Having said that I use different vendors for the strawberry and blueberry, so that might also make a difference.
