Hey guys!
I posted a couple of weeks ago about the new recipe site I’ve been working on. It’s live now at chukr.xyz and ready for brave early adopters.
The site is still in beta and you will likely encounter some bugs. Please let me know if you have any problems or if you have suggestions for improvements.
Special thanks to /u/To0nMaN for great feedback, help with troubleshooting, recipe suggestions, and moral support.
Thanks for taking the time to check out the site...I hope you enjoy using it.
> It's much faster to add flavors by typing in part of the flavor name. It should narrow your scrolling down to flavors that match what you typed.
This feature doesn't seem to deal with spaces well. Typing either 'apple' or 'pie' will find 'apple pie', however typing 'apple pie' finds nothing.
The inspiration widgit is a neat idea. I would ask the background on how it works, however I kind of like the mystery.
A few things I found: Slow response time when navigating, adding flavors is a scrolling nightmare, no save ( does it automatic? ), his do I create a recipe based on my flavors?
Thanks for the feedback. Yeah, it's not speed-optimized yet and the My Stuff page in particular is pretty slow. I'll look into speeding this up.

Recipes and batches do save automatically.
When you create a new recipe, there's no special flavor picker for the flavors in your inventory. That's actually a good idea, if that's what you meant. You can use the inspiration recipe creators to create semi-random recipes from your inventory - they will prefer flavors that you have.
> there's no special flavor picker for the flavors in your inventory. That's actually a good idea
I'd second the request for this. A smaller list of only the things I have on hand would be super useful instead of the full list of flavors. Looks great though, I'm pretty excited to see this go live.

That is already on site and live. If you have an account you can input all of your flavorings, VG/PG and nicotine with the amount on hand. If you use the batch calculator to make the next batch it will adjust your inventory accordingly when you finalize.
Can you add one on one flavors? I just bought a bunch of flavors from wizard, but a few from them.
Will do...I hadn't even heard of these guys.

Seen a post or two about them here.
Yeah I have seen a few bad ones but went for it. I ordered fruity hoops from them since they had a cereal flavor in stock. I am still new so that will be a mistake I learn from I think. I am on the quest to make Cereal Killa by 9South with that flavoring.
I ordered a few others which I think will be nice.
As weird as this sounds, when i click "New Empty Recipe", most of the time it does nothing.
Any ideas?
I had this problem too. To me, it seemed like when chukr was under load, pushing this button 'New Empty Recipe' would cause the new row to get inserted in the DB, but most of the time the forced page refresh would preempt it, so it wouldn't show. The next time you came around, it'd be there.
Have you had any issues with authentication? It authenticates me, but doesn't fully log me in to the site.
That aside, the site looks great!
I have run into some issues with authentication, but not that one in particular. Which operating system/browser are you using, if you don't mind me asking?
Chrome and Safari in osx
edit: I tested it with the persona stuff whitelisted in adblock-plus, and also with adblock-plus disabled. Next I removed all the ad / tracking blocking from my hosts file and tried again. Lastly, I tried it with Firefox with no love.
I also tried it on both windows using chrome and debian using chromium with the same issue.
i've found the recipe creation process to not be very intuitive. what in the world is a batch??
edit:
i think i figured out the batch thing. it makes sense, i guess.
~~i wish i could change my default pg/vg and nic though~~ just figured this part out ... i like that many of the flavors have accurate weights already. that's a huge draw. ~~but i think i'll still use ELR for the time being~~
edit 2:
~~what does "subtract batch volumes from my inventory" mean??~~
edit 3:
ok, wow, i really jumped the gun on my confusion. i get it. this is really cool.
I thought about adding a 'What's the difference between a recipe and a batch' question to the FAQ - do you think that would be helpful for new users? I could see how it would be confusing.
couple bug reports:
- changing the VG percentage in the new batch screen does not update the PG percentage and reverts back to whatever the ratio was before you changed it. Changing the PG percentage works like it should
- custom flavors disappear from the dropdown when making a new recipe.
Made an account but it won't let me log in. Maybe i need to give out some time but it looks too sign in and goes back to log in screen saying iam not signed on. Signing off.
Could you let me know which OS/browser you're using?
Error is:
Login failure: SyntaxError: JSON. parse: unexpected character at line 1 column 1 of the JSON data.
Tried on android Firefox and got this message.
I've been checking Persona's GitHub issues and haven't found this particular one. They do have a troubleshooting helper here: https://people.mozilla.org/~fmarier/troubleshoot.html
Could you visit that page and let me know if any of the checks say No or Disabled?
Thanks much...sorry for the troubles logging in.
Wow, this is awesome. I've never really been impressed by any of the recipe sites out there (or at least the ones I've used) but this has the potential to be brilliant! Thank you for your efforts!
A couple of bugs/comments:
-
After adding a flavor to a recipe, if you go to add another and type in the flavor box to get a list of matches, it will not list the matching flavors. This seems to be an intermittent problem, but when it does happen you have to refresh the screen to get that capability back.
-
Related to above, a refresh often brings up an internal server error.
-
I can't save custom flavors. Clicking on the save button either does nothing, or it generates an internal server error.
-
I know this is nitpicky, but the flavor drop down list isn't alphabetized by vendor. It starts out right, with CAP, FW, TFA, but then goes FA, INW. I realize that one should be typing the flavor in to get a list of matches, but if one wants to scroll then having it alphabetized would be helpful.
Feature Request:
It would fantastic if the site would somehow notify you when stock of a flavor in your inventory falls below a user-determined threshold. For instance, let's say I never want to have lower than 5ml of TFA Peppermint. After I create a new batch and my inventory is adjusted, if I have less than 5ml of peppermint left, the site would somehow notify me of that. I imagine it would be a monstrous pain to make this customizable for each flavor, but even a single user-defined amount would be awesome. Basically, let me know when anything in my inventory falls below "X" ml.
I haven't been able to reproduce 1, 2, or 3, but I think I know what might be causing them. I'll look into it, thanks.
Flavors should be listed alphabetically by vendor, will fix.
Great idea for the low stock notification. I'd also like to set up batch testing notifications, so that you can get reminders to re-test your mixes after one week, two weeks, one month, etc. I'll add these to the requested feature list and will implement ASAP.
Sweet! Batch testing notifications would be badass too. Quick question, how do you plan on keeping up with new flavors? Are you going to rely on people requesting new flavors be added, or do you have a process to identify and add new flavors as they come out?
When viewing lists default is 10 at a time. If changed to 50 or 100 then you view an individual flavor or recipe, then go back it reverts to the 10 per page. If it would stay where you had it when returning back it would be less annoying. Having to keep changing it each time is a PITA. I really notice this when inputting flavors, it's nice to have the entire existing list in view. Also, TFA Apple is missing in the flavors list.
are you still updating this site? i've switched almost all the way over from ELR
Yeah, it's been on the back burner a bit while I've been working on other things, but it's still being updated. Some features I want to add are flavor substitutions (partially implemented), configurable email alerts, and a what's new section for the main page.
Have you run into any issues while using the site, or do you have any feature requests?
all of the bugs i encountered at launch have been fixed. i just wanted to check and make sure it's going to be around so i don't lose these recipes.
seriously, so far i'm loving it. i like that i don't have to manually enter weights for my flavorings. that's the feature that made me switch from ELR.
something that might be useful is opening the "export recipe to plain text" in a new window, as well as maybe some markdown/formatting options for posting to reddit/forums/etc.
thanks for the reply!
