Former smoker. Did you know you were inhaling diacetyl the whole time?
submitted almost 11 years ago by SumDudeYouKnow

Both acetoin and acetyl propionyl are addtives in cigarettes but diacetyl doesn't seem to be according to wiki but according to this study there is a relatively high exposure of diacetyl in cigarette smoke. Higher even than what food flavoring workers are exposed to. They say "because smoking has not been shown to be a risk factor for bronchiolitis obliterans, our findings are inconsistent with claims that diacetyl exposure is a risk factors for this disease.

Does anyone have access to pubmed? I can't find a free public copy of the study.

General theory out there is that smoking can cause bronchiolitis obliterans but it's frequently mis-diagnosed or generalized as COPD.

Sorry, no pubmed subscription here.

It's not a big deal. It occurs in butter and margarine, and at the extremely low levels you might find in juice I am just not that concerned. I am more concerned about colorings and sweeteners in my juice.

I am not saying it's harmless, but before you have a freak out over acetoin and diacetyl there are much more serious concerns coming before that.

I don't use custard flavours, and I used to smoke a pack of cigarettes a day without worry. I was never kidding myself about vaping being 100% harmless. I knew there's probably some concerns. Oh well.

Who cares? We inhaled tar and carbon monoxide among other poisons, diacetyl is a minor concern in comparison.

A lot of people care about diacetyl right now seeing that there is an acetoin/acetyl propionyl/diacetyl exodus from the ejuice market going on. I'm just saying that if you were a smoker, you have already had your dose of it. This says that your dose from cigarette smoke could have been up to 100 higher than that from the random ejuices they tested. It make me feel a little better about puffing on the vanilla custard V1.

I've been saying this all year. It needs to be said more. Some people get so stupid about this stuff. It's analogous to the ones who triple boil cotton in distilled water. When confronted on this, they say "well there could be some trace of something in the cotton" but of course they can't produce anything. These are the same people who flooded their bodies with poisons for years by smoking. smh.

Heck there are even people afraid of 24k gold plating on RDA posts and screws, which is completely inert even if a bit did rub off.

What we have in the vaping community are a whole lot of chemophobic hypochondriacs, and sadly, a lot of people end up listening to them. We're in the business of harm reduction, and we've done amazingly well by collectively expanding on and promoting a pretty simple idea.

Diacetyl itself isn't really needed, and we probably shouldn't encourage flavouring manufacturers to use it. I still see no reason to panic about it though, or to go out of our way to avoid small amounts of it.

Acetoin and acetyl propionyl are still in the "might possibly have similar effects" and "might possibly in very specific conditions produce traces of diacetyl when vaped".

This should be the last of our worries, when we have two huge industries and the governments themselves trying to destroy us.

I love this comment. It's exactly how I feel.

I USED to put all sorts of shit in my body. That is not a reason to not give a fuck about what I put in it now. There is no reason to put something in my body that could possibly be harmful, when I can just as easily avoid it. Why do you care so much about people trying to be healthy? That was the whole idea behind quitting smoking. And yes, now that I have overcome my unhealthy addictions, I am pretty dead set on avoiding putting any more poison in myself.

I think the only reason people care is its the only remote thing we can find that may be harmful with vaping.

I can see where vomit smell and after taste would just not be that good.

I haven't been able to find a recipe with v2 custard and v2 french vanilla either. Time to go back to v1.
