I recently ordered some 100 mg/ml nicotine and (since I'm still waiting for the package with the VG/PG/Flavours) mixed my first batch with store bought 0nic juice. It's the same flavour as the one I previously had premade at 11mg/ml. Both were 55/40% PG/VG, my nic is 100% PG and I mixed 6ml of the 0 nic with 0.8ml of the 100mg/ml. So that should be 11.76 mg/ml nic (a little more than the premade one I had before), with around 60/37 ratio.
I read that PG has more of a throat hit, so since there's a little bit more nic and more PG, I'd expect my mixed one to have more of a throat hit than the one I previously bought ready made, but there's a lot less of a throat hit.
So I'm wondering, either
- my 100mg/ml is actually lower concentration, but I highly doubt it since it's a reputable seller
- my previous one had more than 11mg/ml, which could be possible
- I screwed up mixing, highly doubt it, I used a syringe that's accurate to 0.02 ml and double checked everything.
- there's a difference in the nicotine used.
So I'm wondering if the last option is actually a possibility, i.e. is there a "quality" difference in nicotine that affects throat hit?
Or what else could it be?
My previous one used to scratch my throat quite a bit, whereas I barely notice the one I mixed.
[Edit]
Also, followup question: if there is a difference in the nic <--> throat hit relationship, what factor determines it? If that is even known.
I don't really mix but nicotine from different vendors varies a lot. Some of it really kills my throat and tastes like pepper, some is smooth.
FWIW, what you might discern as being a "throat hit" definitely can be attributed to the quality of the nicotine that the vendor uses. I can agree with /u/greatimmortal that some vendors have a "peppery" nicotine, while others are less discernible. My nephew made up some blends with his own ingredients, and used two different vendors of nicotine. I could tell the difference, as well as he.
FWIW, the juices that I have tried have varied in blend ratios from 70%pg/30%vg, 50/50, 70/vg/30pg and 100% VG. I've noticed that the PG tends to give flavors more of a "punch", and I taste them a lot more than if they were in a 100%VG blend. Of course, I've varied in nicotine concentrations, but I can tell you there IS a difference but YMMV.
The only way to tell is if you get a good vendor that has a reputable quality nicotine, and compare recipes varied only by that singular ingredient. Shout out to /u/NudeNicotine for offering inexpensive samples ($2 for 15ml) on their website http://www.nudenicotine.com/nicotine-sample-request/
I ordered my samples yesterday, in the mail today :)
